Overall this game is wonderful. While the driving is easy to pick up, running around on foot is fun too with the great fist fighting engine. Gun fights are reminiscent of Max Payne with the diving in slow motion making it all very cinematic and hard to dislike. This game should absolutely not be missed. Warning to parents: there is very harsh language and some scenes within a strip club, although there’s no nudity.

True Crime delivers its own brand of addictive free-roaming fun that’s just too clever and entertaining to put down. You’ll spend hours just going through the massive environments looking for crimes to solve and mayhem to cause yourself. There are also some pretty exciting missions that intertwine with a great story filled with interesting characters and plenty of action. Make this a holiday present for those gamers that just love a good action game with a lot going for it.

Even though True Crime isn't a totally original idea, it does take the genre to the next level. It takes everything you love about Grand Theft Auto, and adds gameplay to it. Now I gotta give the Xbox a couple extra points for it's use of 720p HDTV and custom soundtracks. HDTV is something that is a premium with Xbox games, and Activision has really run with it. True Crime is a must have, but it is NOT for kids. Parents that get this for their kids will have no one to blame but themselves. For for guys like me? Crime better take a break, cuz I'm coming to whup that ass!

True Crime is an enjoyable game if you can clear your mind of Grand Theft Auto expectations. The integration of story and gameplay is very nice, but there's a strong possibility that the majority of people won't get it at first because the tendency will be to play this game as if they already know what they're doing. The consequences of your actions and nonactions are huge in True Crime and dramatically change your level of recklessness. It's a storyline that unfolds like a criminal investigation in a good cop show but imagine that you can hop into any point in that show and interact with characters to change the outcome.

Now imagine that that interacting includes a rich fighting component, a deep shooting mechanic and a full driving game and you determine when and to what extent you do what. That's what we've been given here and it's a lot of fun despite the burden of the camera system and other technical glitches.

There is no stopping the wave of games that have been inspired by the now classic and innovative game called Grand Theft Auto 3. The PS2 has already seen these clones and, for the most part, gamers have enjoyed them for the very same reason they adored the GTA games . . . complete control over what you can do and when. True Crime: Streets of LA wants to offer something a bit different while still staying fairly familiar to those gamers that are fans of causing chaos in the streets. But is this game fun enough to be considered a worthy brother of the GTA games or just a poorly designed clone?

PlayStation 2IGN
The biggest hurdle facing the Luxoflux developed True Crime: Streets of LA is its proximity in both premise and expectations to Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto franchise. PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube owners are supposed to want it because, at a glance, it looks so much like the videogame phenom that has dominated the charts for two years, yet gamers are supposed to approach it with an open mind and take it for what it is. True Crime is an action game enabling you to drive around several hundred square miles of Los Angeles streets and seamless exit the car and interact with those same square miles of people, cars and criminals.

While I found the story to be horrible, I did have some fun simply driving around harassing people or stealing the tricked out “Fast & The Furious” like cars spread throughout the level. The unique criminal events also add a nice twist to the fun as I arrived on the scene of a star arguing with his many girlfriends and shot him dead for cheating and drove off. Perhaps that wasn’t how the game was meant to be played, but with the game play being so linear, you make your own fun, you choose the punishment for a particular criminal. The only question left is, Will you be a good cop, or a bad one?

Once I got a handle on the fact that this was not GTA I was able to enjoy True Crime much more. If I had to compare the gameplay to anything else, Dead to Rights comes to mind, but only in basic concept. True Crime is a much more fleshed out design that includes driving, shooting, fighting, and an ongoing RPG skill system to keep improving these skills throughout the game.

Regardless, disregard the GTA fanboy grousing. This is a fun, well-designed, innovative title, and if you've got a long, uninterrupted stretch of weekend in front of you, it's worth at least a rental.

True Crime: Streets of L.A. kommt zwar nicht ganz an GTA Vice City (dt.) heran, bietet aber dennoch einiges fürs Geld.

True Crime: Streets of L.A. ist ein richtig cooles Spiel.

Though there are definitely some unpolished areas, True Crime’s many gameplay styles converge pretty well into a cohesive game that offers a lot of fun and varied things to do. It’s a game that does a few things extremely well and a lot of things competently, but the fact that everything is so well integrated is probably the most impressive. True Crime doesn’t exactly replace or outdo Grand Theft Auto, because it ends up being a somewhat different experience that focuses heavily on action and doesn’t have nearly as much to do out in the living city. But if you just really need a GTA fix on your GameCube, this game is certainly close enough to do the job. More importantly, it’s fun and brilliantly produced, with plenty to do and see. I can easily recommend it to anyone looking for just that.

There are many things that True Crime has over Grand Theft Auto. It adds a more complex, combo-oriented hand-to-hand combat engine plus a load of other cool extras like the KOTOR-esque Good Cop/Bad Cop meter. However, it must be pointed out that True Crime lacks the one element that really made GTA the phenomenon it is: It’s just not cool. Nick Kang, the lead character, is so painfully dorky and lacking in charisma that he might accurately be described as the "Pete Sampras of Video Games."

True Crime is the first game to come along and truly give the Grand Theft Auto series a run for its money. I’ll even go as far as to say that the sheer size and scope of this project simply dwarfs anything that Rockstar has delivered thus far. Not only does it boast an open-ended gameplay design set within the sprawling streets of Los Angeles, True Crime grants players the freedom to uphold the law as an virtuous cop, or go Bad Lieutenant and terrorize the city of angels.

This is a perfect segue into the other effect, that of the Karma system. True Crime bases a certain amount of its gameplay around the idea of actions and consequences committed by the player, ranking Nick along a good cop/bad cop definition. Saving innocent lives, stopping rampages with minimal property damage and other tactically sound measures will ensure a favorable rating and ending for the game, while shooting or running over anything that moves will quickly plunge him into trouble with the law.

"True Crime: Streets of L.A." is a solid game that manages to be more than just a "GTA" clone. It was clearly rushed, however, and the numerous bugs and glitches drag it down to a great degree. With a few more months of polish, "True Crime" would have been a contender for a five. It's a ride worth taking, but not quite perfection.

Bringing an M-rated game to GameCube is a gamble, but Activision’s GTA-influenced action game is a no-brainer. Unfortunately, this is the worst of the three console versions of this title. Fortunately, it’s still pretty darn good.

Many people will play this game and laugh it off as a campy take-off of B-movie cop flicks, and they would be right. With lines like "this is my BOOMstick", there is no escaping the sense that you are in a Lethal Weapon sequel. But is that such a bad thing? Video games are meant to be fun, and despite some mushy controls and difficulties, True Crime is a fun romp around LA.

True Crime does have its share of faults, and at times was either un-fun or completely implausible, but the story and excellent production values fueled my desire to see the game through to completion. It’s not a long game – I was able to finish one of the endings in 3 nights of casual play – but there is a lot of replay value with the alternate endings, random crime generator and the multiplayer action. It’s not often you get to play a game that has as many well-known and talented actors appearing in it, and their performances are worth getting the game alone.

The problems can't tear down the fact that True Crime really does create its own identity, with a tough, unforgiving combat model that creates as solid a police sim as GTA did for gangsters. Too bad it's so short, but there's plenty to do in the city of L.A. once the story is over. This is the first game that treats the GTA model as inspiration rather than a quick ticket to the bank, and it's enough to make you take a whole new perspective on the LAPD. Well, almost.

Visually, True Crime is a solid operation with one major flaw. The rendering of L.A. is superb -- simply put, there's not a better real-world model in gaming. If you know the city at all, simply cruising is a lot of fun; I was able to hit that lousy hotel that overcharged me last E3. Character and car models aren't as nice, but they do the job. The problem is with the camera, which has some real problems in tight quarters. There are also occasional clipping issues between characters, but the camera is the sticking point.

In the past two years, the release of new Grand Theft Auto titles has created in PS2 owners a new Pavlovian response to seeing the leaves change color. But since Rockstar is too busy remaking The Running Man this year, Activision has stepped up to with a potential lust-inducer. Thankfully, despite many superficial similarities, there's more to True Crime than GTA emulation. For where GTA was a grand crime simulation, here we have the opposite, a law enforcement model that tries to link your behavior to the game's outcome. It's not as polished as the competition, but True Crime: Streets of LA adds enough to smart, free-roaming gameplay that it's definitely worth a look. You're Nick Kang, the son of a famed LAPD officer, recruited to the elite EOD, which has jurisdiction over the entire city of LA.

Despite a control system that can be annoying at times and a not entirely successful freeform approach, the main plotline in True Crime is strong enough to keep you going through the game and the ability to shoot, kick and drive around Los Angeles like a lunatic is a lot of fun.

While it does not have the freedom of GTA, True Crime is an engaging and exciting city-based rampage. It lacks a little polish in places but overall the impression is of a very well crafted game. Nick Kang is annoying, but there's enough freedom and action on offer here to keep most gamers very happy. Some annoying dialogue, the varying difficulty level and an underused city mean the game is only good, rather than brilliant.

In the end, it’s the little things that hurt True Crime: Streets of LA. The game tries to be everything for everyone by offering a great variety of gameplay styles, but doesn’t quite succeed at any of them. Each facet of the game has minor issues that hurt an otherwise enjoyable experience. If you have any doubts about this title, rent it first. What could have been a great game, a masterpiece even, is reduced to just a good game that’s well worth checking out.

We all know that the streets of L.A. are tough. From riots to gang warfare to high-speed freeway chases, the media portrays Los Angeles as a city of chaos, where the scumbags outnumber the good samaritans about 10 to 1. And of course, the LAPD is nowhere to be found. Probably off eating at a doughnut shop or beating someone up.

True Crime comes across as a title that could have been so much better had it stayed in the oven for a little bit longer. It's not a bad game by any means, but if its flaws were ironed out it really would be the GTA killer the hype machines have somewhat presented it to be. Bits such as the fighting engine can be fun even though it is probably the most flawed aspect of the entire game, though when fighting the tougher enemies in the game those flaws are quickly frustrating, to the point of some people returning the game. However, when you look past the game's flaws you will find a title that is worthy of a second look, though definitely not a blind purchase.

True Crime is a game that simply lacks polish and, in some cases, feels unfinished. It makes decent attempts with its different styles of gameplay, but none of them are particularly well done, and the game's storyline doesn't tie them together in a satisfying way. Add to that an annoying lead character and a general lack of difficulty (that makes the game's eight chapters seem even shorter than they already are), and you've got a game that's worth renting but not much else.

True Crime makes decent attempts at different styles of gameplay, but none of them are particularly well done, and the game's storyline doesn't tie them together in a satisfying way. As video games become more and more complex and realistic-looking, game developers are starting to look toward other mediums for inspiration. No longer is game creation as simple as inventing a character, creating a world, and plotting out a mess of sprites. With the increased power of today's consoles, game developers have to consider the best way to keep players immersed in a game's world--a process that touches everything from the gameplay to the graphics to the soundtrack.

Mature GameCube gamers! Are you tired of slaying AT AT Walkers with your speeder? Are you sick of roaming the Simpson’s neighborhood? Do you think that a good fighting game must have Link’s moose knuckles in tights? Well, here’s an alternative for you to experience. No matter how sloppy the camera work is, thank GOD Activision has released this game onto the purple lunch box. Hopefully it will spear head other developers and publishers to release their mature titles on the Cube. True Crime works like Knights of the Old Republic in terms of character development and especially with the whole good vs. bad spirit levels. You can be evil or good but the repercussions are many and you have the freedom to choose which works for you. However, because of certain issues with the camera and game play I can only recommend that you rent this title before you consider buying it. And that’s for shizzle my Dojo Discipe-izzles!

With the next Grand Theft Auto title still a year away and the coast clear on the Getaway expansion pack front, there's a definite gap for a city-based action title this Christmas, and it's hardly surprising to see Activision and Luxoflux stepping up to try and fill the void - someone was bound to. But although comparisons with GTA III and its multi-million-selling sequel are inevitable, True Crime actually does a good job of setting out its own stall, with more of an emphasis on hand-to-hand combat, gun-slinging car chases, a Getaway-style narrative, and almost RPG-like progression as stereotypical LA cop Nick Kang steps off suspension and finds himself fighting to wrestle the City of Angels out of the hands of high-rolling crooks, accumulating new tools, tactics and grapple holds along the way.

A rogue cop takes on Chinese Triad pencil-necks and hairy-backed Russian Mafiosos in Activision?s overhyped cash-in on the Grand Theft Auto phenomenon. As Nick Kang, a cop with a Godzilla-sized bug up his ass and an arsenal of embarrassingly bad one-liners, you've gotta topple a money-counterfeiting operation using a combination of driving, gunplay, and fighting in missions ranging from discotheque shootouts and shower-room brawls to tailing crooked cops and dodging snipers.

They've quite ruined the game. It has potential to be good with the storyline and the huge city, but the awful controls make fighting with your fists a pain and knowing that there's a lot of fighting necessary only makes you frustrated. The multiplayer mode is extremely overhyped and in fact sucks big time. Too bad, a lot of potential has gone to waste...

True Crime is good for the most part and has a great concept. The drawbacks were that the game could get boring easily (and quickly) and glitches such as you being unable to catch a suspect because the game thinks that they are still in a car, even after they get out. There is some replay value in True Crime, other than unlocking the secret character, Snoop Dog and playing through to see the other endings. The mini missions that you can get on your police band radio also adds some interest to the game, seeing how they can often be pretty amusing.

While the game did well on the consoles, we've seen many technical disadvantages in the PC version thanks to which True Crime could never measure up to games like Vice City. Due to several such flaws, the short main story and lack of more engaging side missions, the good stuff about this game, like its relatively open-ended nature and decent plot, good AI and fun combat, don't get a chance to truly shine.

I was so looking forward to playing this game! I remember first reading some previews about it before it was released on consoles, and I remember hoping that they would eventually port it to PC. I was glad that they finally did, however, I probably wouldn’t have cared too much if it wasn’t ported if I had tried it first on any one of the consoles. For a game that seemed to have so much promise, I must say that I am disappointed. While not a bad game, True Crime just doesn’t cut it with the better games of today.

In the end, True Crime is a game that really lacks polish and, in some cases, feels unfinished. It makes decent attempts with its different styles of gameplay, but none of them are particularly well done. Furthermore, the game's control is poor, and its storyline doesn't tie together in a satisfying way. Add to that an annoying lead character, a general lack of difficulty (which makes the game's eight chapters seem even shorter than they already are), and an ill-conceived multiplayer mode, and you've got a game that isn't really worth your time.

It’s no Grand Theft Auto, but if you like third-person shooters and are looking for a game that lets you explore your thug side, True Crime: Streets of LA might fit the bill.

The GTA killer it wasn’t, but True Crime: Streets of Los Angeles was a decent game in its own right, on consoles. Can it make the leap to the hearts of PC gamers who want their action on their desks instead of couches? Luxoflux and Activision sure have made an effort to bring TC to a new breed of gamers with some additional features that the console guys missed out on, such as more music, more firepower and multiplayer(!!) action.

While the yin and yang of treading the fabled thin blue line is intriguing, the gameplay of True Crime is hampered by a host of negatives. It's a fun game, but it's hard to recommend to hardcore PC gamers -- you'll need a strong appreciation of console gaming to embrace it. And that's the true crime here, as this was a game that should have translated to a truly sublime PC gaming experience.

True Crime: Streets of L.A., recently ported by Aspyr, has a lot to live up to. Never mind that it came to the Mac (and the PC) later than the consoles; this game boasts a lot of "me too" features that require it to distinguish itself from those games to which it is invariably compared. True Crime offers a huge, open map, varied game play, and the means by which to choose your fate. How does it stack up to some legendary games into whose company True Crime has thrust itself? Read on.

Overall, True Crime is a fun romp around LA; fans of GTA and Driver might like it. It is a sham really, since this could have been a game that blew GTA and Driver so far out of the water that they were reaching orbit, but the storyline and gameplay just feel rushed and totally wastes the excellent systems that are in place, and that is a true crime.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City it is not. True Crime is an average time running around wreaking random havoc, burdened by bad controls that could've made it a B game with more polish, but just can't quite find its way out of average pitfalls.

WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW)
Graphically, the game doesn’t quite measure up, since it looks like, well, a badly ported PS2 game with washed-out colors, graphical glitches, and only average textures and modeling, This, along with the appallingly bad driving sequences, horrible characters, plentiful clichés, and cringe-inducing dialogue, proves that unlike Splinter Cell, not all console/PC marriages are made in heaven.

Now, am I panning True Crime: Streets of L.A. because of the frustration that stemmed from our inability to get the game running? No. That'd be too easy. Unfortunately, I'm panning the game because it's just not any good. It's clichéd and it's tired, and it puts attitude over style. It looks good, but who cares about that anymore? All games requiring an 867Mhz G4 or higher look good. As we learned recently from DOOM 3, looking good is no longer enough.
