Excellent graphics, action-packed gameplay, killer multi player and lots of blood! That all makes for a great game. The storyline and technical aspects of the game add to the appeal. One thing the developers need to work on, oddly enough one of our favorite areas of the game, is the multi player section. Multi player is great, but could be so much better with the introduction of enemy AI and system link capabilities. Recommended by XboxSolution Staff.

XboxThe Next Level
I highly anticipated this title, and now that I've thoroughly explored it, I can honestly say that I'm very pleased. Despite the poor initial levels and my other gripes, this game is an adrenaline-filled rush that any action junky will appreciate. It's a shame that many players may never give it enough of a chance to really experience the white-knuckled gameplay it possesses. The Turok series is alive and well and I hope Acclaim is able to build off this already strong foundation.

XboxGame Chronicles
I’m very happy to see that Acclaim actually put some extra effort into the Xbox version of Turok: Evolution. In this day of multi-platform releases it is all too easy to program for the lower common denominator and count your profits. This version has been tweaked and tune to make the most of the Xbox system and it really shows.

XboxAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Light on story, heavy on action and gore, Turok Evolution will appeal to fans of the series, but lags a bit behind the design philosophy for most newer shooters. Solid gameplay and excellent multiplayer construction are both hampered a bit by questionable AI routines, but overall, you can have a good time in either pastime. The addition of flight modes similar to linear flyers like Rogue Squadron and Star Fox is an excellent break from the first-person action, and fans of that genre will be pleased to find they can dogfight in multiplayer as well. Graphically, Turok Evolution won’t blow you away, but its visuals are decent enough, and the sound design doesn’t disappoint either. All in all, the leap from the N64 didn’t really change the Turok franchise: It’s still not the best out there, but it’s a strong second in a lot of categories.

PlayStation 2Play.tm
All in all, Turok plays more or less just how it should. Quick thrills, cheap kills. It's a no brainer of a game perfect for a rental or if your fancy blasting your enemies into little blood spurting pieces. It's a good little game that's fun, as long as your brain is switched off. Just don't think, play!

GameCubeNetjak
It's not perfect, but it does everything it's supposed to. While not having "game-of-the-year" potential like Halo, it still delivers. Don't bother renting, just buy it!

GameCubeGamePro (US)
Turok has always been an ambitious game, but its first three installments were limited by the hardware they were confined to, the Nintendo 64. With this the first next-gen entry in the series Turok evolves into a topnotch console corridor shooter.
79
PlayStation 2Game Chronicles
Turok: Evolution has some reasonably good graphics, excellent sound and music, and a nice story, but these are all severely hampered by twitchy control issues and the lack of checkpoints or a mid-mission save feature. Unless you are some kind of gaming god you will probably be reduced to using a cheat code to get through some level sooner or later.
78
GameCubeGame Informer Magazine
Any game that allows me to represent mass violence scores a few kudos points. Turok is an FPS that executes its killing component fairly well. Players will encounter numerous weapons with two modes of fire each, copious amounts of ammo and health, and myriad targets with sometimes intelligent AI routines, which keeps combat interesting.
76
XboxGame Over Online
When it all comes down to it, Turok: Evolution could have been better. Though the FPS levels are solid in design, the game’s mediocre flying levels constantly get in the way of what is good about the game. If you’re a fan of first-person shooters, you should go ahead and buy Turok: Evolution. For everyone else though, you might want to rent before you buy.

I was hoping that I would walk away boasting, “Halo who?”, but I actually found myself thinking, “Maybe I should just play Halo instead?” Before you flip the page and write Turok off completely, it did come close to greatness, and Acclaim’s efforts are commendable, but the execution of gameplay has mixed results.

When it's all over, it's hard not to be satisfied with Turok Evolution. Granted, it's not quite the evolution the marketing team makes it out to be, but it still manages to be a great ride covered with tons of glorious red blood. Fans of the series will be enthralled with this entry, especially with the addition of the flying stages. This series has officially been brought back from the dead.

While the controls, and in a small part the AI, detract from the game, all in all Turok: Evolution is a good game. I am sure with a little practice the controls will become second nature and therefore improve the overall enjoyment of the game. This is a game that I would recommend to anyone that asks but I would explain that you might be put off at first. After playing for a while Turok will grow on you and become a good addition to anyone’s collection if you can just get that sinister music out of your head.

Turok Evolution is a prequel to the original Turok. The game returns players into the lush forests, with myriads of hungry, relentless dinosaurs wanting to make you their next meal. The story begins with Tal'Set, a powerful Native American warrior of the Saquin nation, on a cliff fighting his nemesis Captain Bruckner, of the United States Army. Suddenly, a strange energy engulfs them and transports them to another world entitled "The Lost Lands." There are many malicious things going on in this land and it is beginning to get to the point where all hope is gone.

The game does not try and hold itself out in any special way, Timesplitters had it's frantic multiplayer, Red Faction had Geo-Mod, but Turok: Evolution doesn't seem to have anything new at all. The game achieves so much in some areas and then lets itself down in many others. If you're a huge fps or Turok fan then you might like the game, but casual players may want to try before they buy.
73
GameCubeGameSpot
You won't find much that's new in Turok: Evolution, but if you're a fan of the series, you'll find what you're looking for. The game has the typical drawbacks--it can be a bit difficult or repetitive at times, the enemy AI sometimes exhibits laughable behavior, and the controls suffer from the same awkwardness that plagues most console shooters. If this is your kind of game, however, you'll be able to take these minor flaws in stride and have a good time with Turok: Evolution.
73
XboxGameSpot
Ultimately, Turok: Evolution is another dose of the prehistoric shooter action that we've seen in previous installments. It's formulaic but done well enough, so if you're into the previous installments or looking for another first-person shooter, then you'll find something to like in it. Don't expect the next Halo from Turok: Evolution, but the game largely accomplishes what it sets out to do, and for Turok fans, that should be just fine.
72
XboxGameSpy
Like many first-person shooters these days, Turok: Evolution tries very hard to be like other games and fails to make its own mark. It has its moments and is worth a rental simply for the first few hours before it becomes repetitious. But with Halo and a host of other games that take advantage of the Xbox hardware available, purchasing is not advised.
71
XboxIGN
Having said all that, I found Turok: Evolution to be a mix of enjoyment and frustration. At times I was thoroughly amused, sniping enemies and causing mayhem, while at other moments I was frustrated and in a state of pure tedium. I can only recommend that the most hardcore of Turok fans pick the title up. Everyone else will want to stick to a rental, because it's definitely worth checking out, especially given that the multiplayer mode is quite entertaining.

So now you might ask: How can something so laden with programming errors, long loading times, control issues and graphical glitches get a 7.0? Well, the answer is simple, really, because underneath all this lies a big and challenging game that is enjoyable even when its short-comings are extremely pronounced. Also, when looking back there are countless of little memorable situations that stick to my mind. These things alone make this a solid game that deserves a good score. Still, you cannot help but wonder how great this could game been, had Acclaim spent a little more time sorting things out.

GameCubeGameSpy
Aside from being one of the most visually impressive games from the last generation, Turok 2 also established a benchmark for enemy AI. Dinosoids would take cover behind objects and play a mean game of Ring Around the Rosie--making it almost impossible to get off a clean shot. They'd also run when being outgunned and call for reinforcements. The enemies in Turok: Evolution feature no such intelligence and will almost always follow scripted commands regardless of what happens around them. They're so stupid that they'll perform evasive maneuvers and roll themselves right off the side of a cliff. It's also humorous to watch them run directly into walls and keep running in the same direction or stand there motionless while one of their comrades is beheaded right in front of them with a well-placed sniper shot. How a game released by the same development studio several years later could have deteriorated so much in this area is puzzling.

PlayStation 2Game Critics
Is Turok: Evolution the next Halo? Do chickens have teeth? Evolution lacks Halos seamless integration of plot, varied gameplay devices, and aggressive pacing. Friendly squad artificial intelligence, for example, is integrated into the game but it is done in such an arbitrary fashion that, unlike Halo, there is no sense of connection between the player and the friendly soldiers. The lack of mid-level saves hurts the flow of the game, as some of the levels are quite long and challenging, and having to replay large chunks of a level is a real test of patience. Acclaim integrated some flying levels that feature rail-shooting gameplay reminiscent of Rogue Squadron and Panzer Dragoon, which although decently designed are needlessly disjointed from the rest of the game, much like the driving levels in EAs Bond-themed shooter Agent Under Fire.
70
PlayStation 2GameSpot
Your level of interest in Turok: Evolution will be very much contingent on your interest in past Turok games. Aside from a few minor issues, this latest installment is pretty solid all around, but it doesn't bring many new ideas to the table. In the end, Turok: Evolution is a bread-and-butter console shooter that will let you blast enemies to your heart's content, but not a whole lot else. If that's good enough for you, then go for it.
70
XboxGame Critics
Turok has always been famous for his arsenal, and the bevy of gruesome death-dealers in Evolution does not disappoint. You get poison arrows that make your enemies vomit to death, rockets that blow them to pieces, a "gravity disruptor" that splatters them against the walls, and even a "swarm bore"—a take on Turok 2s "cerebral bore"—that slowly dismembers its hapless victims. Sniper scopes, grenades, a minigun, and many others round out an impressive lineup. The only problem is that Acclaim did away with the quick-select system found in Seeds Of Evil. Trying to scroll through such a large assortment of weapons in the heat of the moment can be tedious and frustrating.

XboxGamePro (US)
Turok: Evolution is a worthy FPS for anyone who enjoys this type of genre. However, clumsy computer A.I. and awful multiplayer games nick this game to only a single-player and a nice rental adventure.
69
GameCubePower Unlimited
De wisselvallige A.I. is het grootste minpunt.

GameCubeIGN
Over a half decade ago, a developer by the name of Iguana Entertainment broke onto the scene with Turok: Dinosaur Hunter for the Nintendo 64. It was an impressive first-person shooter for home consoles at the time, offering up a mix of gory visuals, exaggerated weaponry, and even platform elements. Thanks to some notable sales, it wasn't long before Acclaim had Iguana start on the sequel Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. It is largely regarded as the most ambitious Turok, because it brought unprecedented "high-rez" -- as Acclaim coined it -- 640x480 visuals, stunning animations, massive environments, and a multiplayer mode onto a sizable N64 cartridge. Only Turok 2's unbalanced game design held it back from complete greatness.
65
PlayStation 2GameSpy
If you're looking to pick up a version of Turok: Evolution and are lucky enough to have more than one console, take a pass on the PlayStation 2 version. The graphics are, by far, the worst of the three, the dodgy framerates make it almost unplayable at times, and the multiplayer modes only support two players. If the PS2 is your only option, it's hard to recommend as anything other than a rental unless your thirst for multiplayer action has gone unquenched.

Turok Evolution erinnert mich an meine Vorgesetzten.

Turok: Evolution is for you. Switching and firing off a round between the entire arsenal of weapons is a cinch and the only control feature you have to worry about. At the very least, this latest Turok will have your blood pumping and fingers twitching during a weekend rental.
58
XboxThe Video Game Critic
I like how Turok's stages tend to be short, and the game automatically saves your progress after each. When you take into account a four-player split-screen mode, you have a very respectable Xbox shooter on your hands. Evolution didn't thrust Turok back into the limelight, but those disenchanted with the Nintendo 64 sequels will be pleased to see him return to form.
58
GameCubeGame Revolution
It's a shame that some poor game design choices mar an otherwise pretty game, one with potential and one that they clearly spent a lot of time on. Turok: Evolution is possibly the most misleading title of all time, since this game hasn't evolved at all.
58
PlayStation 2Netjak
If this game were to be considered a line segment, say line AC, then my feelings on this game would be the midpoint B, because I enjoy certain parts of this game, however a big majority of the game is rather boring, and once you beat it, there’s absolutely no reason to play it again. This game would be ok for a 5-day or so rental period, because the game isn’t the most challenging game you’ll ever play, as I beat it in a 6 hour time period with no problems at all. Once again, the PS2 is bombarded with more below average-average games.
50
PlayStation 2Eurogamer.net (UK)
I doubt the score here will surprise anybody, because Turok is very average first person shooter and extremely disappointing to boot. Fans of the series will probably enjoy it, but it is by no means the evolution we were promised. The Cube and Xbox versions allegedly cure a few of the PS2 release's graphical and audio ills, not to mention alleviating it of dinosauric load times, but when the game simply isn't much fun to play, there seems little point in opting for any of them.

Turok has too many conflicting genres: dinosaurs, armoured lizard men, laser weapons and hightech gadgets. I never thought I'd say this, but there are actually too many weapons. Honestly, there is too much of everything: too many graphics, too much scenery. There is always foliage in your face and you're stuck in an endless cycle of getting lost and disoriented. The Xbox has spoiled us with treasures such as Halo, but Turok and its chunky gameplay fall well short. The mark of a great game is being able to do one thing very, very well, not many things very badly.

It's hard to believe games like this are still released on the PC. Badly ported, this FPS is an example of the worst kind of opportunistic, puss-faced, enthusiasm-over-talent games you're likely to see any time soon. Graphics which would leave a Gameboy feeling cheated, this dino-bashing excuse for a shooter sees you playing as a pony-tailed American Indian, transported into a world of dinosaurs and pug-faced aliens who can't shoot straight.
