I somehow missed the iPhone/iPod Touch version of Twin Blades when it was released last December, so when I first saw the HD version of the game running on the iPad, I was absolutely blown away. Twin Blades is one of the most gorgeously drawn and animated 2D games I've seen running on the device, never mind one of the best looking games on the App Store. I hate that the game forces you to shake you iPad whenever you've been caught by a zombie, but it does most everything else right to provide a relaxed, non-intensive experience that's easy to hop into and a joy to look at and show off.

In fact, the game hooks you by virtue of a well-judged difficulty curve allied to a drip-feed of upgrades. Just when you think you've improved your weapons sufficiently, along comes a better-protected enemy that laughs in the face of your enhancements. It's a balance that keeps you coming back for another few minutes of button mashing, and a structure that manages to create the illusion of satisfaction from the upgrade grind. Clever swines.
