There is nothing else like this game! Where else can you throw napalm out of an ice cream truck, smash into Diablos and run over pedestrians. With a choice of 12 vehicles --- all of which vary in armor, weapons, speed and agility --- any gamer, including myself, will never get bored. The control, which is very precise and clean, varies from vehicle to vehicle, as do the endings. Any game with Molotov cocktails, exploding cop cars and napalm ice cream cones has got to be good!

The single most important aspect of Twisted Metal is it's original theme. Dashing madly across inner city streets and suburbs, bent on destruction in an ice cream truck, no less, is just the coolest. Rolling up on people's lawns, cutting through parks, leaping into storm drains and pulling into convenience stores is pure genius. You can go anywhere in TM. PS 3-D is where it's at and this game goes there with ample force and deep gameplay.

There's no doubt that Twisted Metal is one of the best Playstation games available and a great addition to any library, however I would like to have seen longer levels and slightly improved gameplay, I suppose that's what we should expect from the inevitable Twisted Metal 2.

If it'd had link capabilities, it would have been a solid "10". While two-player mode is still fun, it would have been a lot cooler if you and a friend could both partake in the same eight-car seek-and-destroy, battle royale. Undoubtedly, one of this year's top ten games.

Once you get the hang of it, Twisted Metal has terrific playability. Even after you've solved it with one vehicle, there are still 11 more to go, so the game doesn't lose all interest after one sitting. There is also the 2 player option where you can duel with your friends.

The only thing the first Twisted Metal really lacked was expanded multiplayer. While only six levels does make the single player campaign short, the challenge at higher difficulties along with the diverse characters definitely make it worth playing much more than once. Overall, a pretty awesome freshman effort. Later entries in the series would start to stray from the path more than iterate on this one, but the first game is definitely one of my favorite PS1 titles.

Despite it's flaws, this twisted game is fun. If you can overlook the graphics break-up, take Twisted Metal out for a test drive.

The game's only downfall is that it's just too short. The game can be completed in just a couple of hours. However, the two-player split-screen combat mode more than makes up for the one-player mode's lack of length. Over all, a solid game.

But the biggest problem with Twisted Metal is its frame-rate. Even in the single player mode, the choppiness makes it difficult to maintain control. The control scheme is well-designed, and the head-banging music is not bad. Audio effects include a distinctive signature sound for each vehicle - so you'll know who hit you. Twisted Metal was a truly innovative title that begat a long, popular series.
