Tyrian 2000

Tyrian 2000 is one of the best space arcade games ever made. Why? I thought you would never ask, let me tell you. The graphic in the game is pure perfection! (Look at the screens, agree and read on). The music is also exceptional. There isn't much more to say about that. What gives this game a pure 5 point score is the plot. Yes, this game (unlike all the others) has a plot. And it is a deep one.

By today's standards, Tyrian 2000 is way behind the times. The game has added features, but the game wasn't modernized. This still looks just like Epic's DOS game that came out years earlier. While it has been refitted to run under Windows and has some extra features, it is basically still an old DOS game. Had XSIV really wanted to pursue a modernization of this game, it would have been nice to see 800x600 graphics resolution, support for 3D sound, etc. Unfortunately, that isn't the case - this is still the old DOS game with some new features. Bottom Line: The old DOS game Tyrian made to run smoothly under Windows with some new gameplay features added in. It's a fun game, but it's an OLD game.

Overall, the game is supremely lacking. Really only aimed at a few, very select gamers who are stuck in the old Aero-Fighter genre of shooters, Tyrian 2000 is just a more complicated version of 1942. This genre has been basically beaten to death; everything that could be done has been done. This time, they didn't even bother to update the graphics. My recommendation: don't bother even looking at the box.
