Universe at War: Earth Assault is, to be brief, a very good real-time strategy game you should try out, if nothing else. Once again, the gents and ladies at Petroglyph haven't disappointed. However, there's still nothing groundbreaking to be had here and due to the aforementioned slip ups, the game failed to achieve its full potential. But it comes very close.

Online play suffers from the Games For Windows Live disease while the single player game is a tad short and heavily scripted. Single player mission difficulty also varies too much, and there are some minor path-finding issues. Still, a fairly good RTS to pass the time while you wait for Blizzard's Starcraft 2 to appear.

With all the humming along, it stunned me to find simple RTS elements missing, like the ability to give a unit a guard command. It's a stumble that holds UAW back from achieving the greatness that was within it's reach.

With three different races and an awesome B-movie singleplayer campaign, this game will sadly get get buried under a deluge of other games released during the holiday season. If you are looking for a game to tide you over till Starcraft 2, this will definitely fit the bill. If you can get over the fact that there is a small camera issue and gold membership is needed to unlock all of the multiplayer features, this game is a very enjoyable. Hopefully if you purchase the game, I can see on the online battlefield.

Universe at War has more in common with StarCraft than with Petroglyph's previous effort, Star Wars: Empire. A few UI blunders are all that hold this back from being a classic. Universe at War is definitely recommended for bored strategy gamers.

Universe at War is let down somewhat by the campaign and terribly cliched story. What it shines in though is balance and the fact that the factions all feel unique, the graphics are excellent and skirmish/mp is where it's truly at.

That's not to say that all this is easy to coordinate on the fly, or that the game isn't without its bugs or hiccups. But it didn't overshadow my fun in crushing foes under a customized walker packed to the gills with guns and tech.

The user interface is very clean, but mastering the nuances of micromanagement takes time; I longed for a troop summary view where I could see which unites needed further customization. But none of these minor issues stopped me from having a good time.

Overall, Petroglyph have proved that console-based RTS games can work successfully. PC owners might not think that there's much to crow about but for 360 owners this is a genuine step forward. Some players might be put off by the sheer amount of time you need to devote to the game to get the most from it, but there's plenty of speedy fun to be had in skirmish mode and online if you don't fancy the long haul of chipping away at the campaign mode.

WindowsGamer 2.0
Universe at War delivers a unique, fresh gaming experience with factions that have truly innovative concepts sewn intrinsically into them. Unfortunately, it suffers from a few interface issues and bugs that, while not crippling the game, can frequently make it somewhat annoying to play. Though its remarkable faction balance shines in a multiplayer arena, the necessity of a pay-per-month scheme to unlock all online gaming options hinders the game greatly. Universe at War ends up being a remarkable title, held back from being truly great by a few unfortunate fundamental design flaws and another instance of corporate greed taking priority over delivering a quality gaming experience.
80
WindowsIGN
On the surface, Universe at War: Earth Assault is your standard base laying, resource harvesting, unit building affair. But what Petroglyph has done is to take that basic framework and use it to create a game with three wildly unique but finely balanced factions that each offer a level of real-time customization that gives players a chance to really adapt to the changing circumstances on the battlefield. Unfortunately, the game's campaign doesn't do justice to the overall design while a number of sticky interface and performance problems add to the frustrations.

WindowsGamePro (US)
Universe at War is ultimately a game of contrasts. On one hand it has plenty of great ideas and promise, but it lacks the polish that helps elevate games towards greatness. It's a shame that it doesn't quite live up to its potential, but I still recommend that gamers check it out. Fans of the genre, especially those looking for the next big multiplayer RTS experience, will undoubtedly find much to admire in this package.

If you like your strategy games with a sense of fun about them, while still offering some actual strategy, Universe at War: Earth Assault should speak to you. Plus, if you get on board now, before the Xbox 360 release, you should have enough skill to completely obliterate anyone on a 360 since the game will support cross-platform play over Live.

Ultimately, Universe at War provides a collection of intense conflicts that thrill more than challenge, some excellent skirmish options, and an OK freeform campaign. If you're looking for a- strategy game to fill the void until the next great RTS, Universe at War fits the bill.

So here's the quandary I face in this review: on the one hand I've had some cracking skirmish and multiplayer games of Universe at War; on the other, the campaign in which aliens invade the Earth is rather aged and clunksome.

WindowsFragland.net
You can compare Universe at War: Earth Assault with a rough diamond. While it has several beautiful features like three races, innovating gameplay and cross-over multiplayer, it sadly also has some negative points. The Windows Live service is a bit of trial and error and the interface is too empty for an RTS game on PC. But if you can ignore these negative points, you can expect a more than decent RTS experience.

Huolimatta lajityypin perusongelmista ja kampanjan tökeryydestä Universe at War on pikapeleissä kohtuullisen viihdyttävä tapaus. En osaa sanoa, tarjoaako peli paljonkaan sellaista, mitä muualla ei olisi jo nähty, mutta ottaen huomioon Xbox 360:n kapean rts-pelien valikoiman ja pelin rotujen omaperäisen suunnittelun Universe at Warille voi olla pientä tilausta nimenomaan konsolistrategiana. Viimeistelyn puute ja puujalkakampanja antavat kuitenkin syytä odottaa hinnanalennusta.

Universe at War: Earth Assault is this year's Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends. In other words, it's an attempt to deliver an old-school real-time strategy game that features three incredibly unique and distinct factions. And in that regard, Universe at War delivers because it does introduce three alien races, two of which feel like they haven't been seen before in RTS gaming. At the same time, Universe at War also sports some major flaws that hamper it quite a bit.

Xbox 360GameZone
Universe at War: Earth Assault is a good RTS game that is held up by performance and graphical issues. I think that the developers made a step forward in their control scheme, but it is still far from perfect, especially for players who are accustomed to playing their RTS games on a PC. If you are itching for an RTS you might want to rent this game before purchasing it, but underneath all the flaws you will find a fun game to play.

If it had free no-holds-barred multiplayer, UaW would be a very good game. They fix the camera issue and balance it out a little, it maybe moves up to 90%+ realm: a great game, but not as it is now.

It’s a new game, a present game and an old game all at the same time. It’s knee deep in RTS gaming clichés but at the same time presents some interesting new quirks. It’s got an interesting story, but that’s not why we play RTS’s. It’s got everything it needs, but just doesn’t shine through the hordes of other RTS / FPS games on the market. It won’t stand long in your memory but will keep you entertained for a healthy period of time.

If you're planning on playing LAN multiplayer games, or if you're an Xbox Live Gold subscriber already, we can happily recommend Universe at War; it's tarnished brilliance, but brilliance nonetheless. We suspect that most players, however, will find this game simply too flawed to spend too much time on. A seven is respectable - but it's depressing just how little work Petroglyph would have needed to do to make this into a nine.

Xbox 360Yet Another Review Site (YARS)
Even though this is a cracking console RTS, it falls short of greatness due to its obvious PC roots. A missed chance. Close, but no cigar. I think you get my drift. Although if you do not have a new high spec pc, and only play games on a console, then it doesn't get much better than this.

Xbox 360GamingHeaven / DriverHeaven
Universe At War: Earth Assault is a rather poorly executed port of a very good PC game, while it might be appealing to a small group of Xbox 360 strategy gamers, for the rest of us it ends up being a solid game ruined by a plethora of bugs and glitches.

WindowsDarkZero
In the end this game would receive a rating of 8 if it didn’t go in the wrong direction with some aspects. It’s got some great innovative factions, fun gameplay and a nice sci-fi presentation vibe. The problem is the campaign isn’t well thought up and the implementation of Games for Windows Gold subscription for the bulk of the multiplayer is just damn daylight robbery. PC gamers have had free multiplayer for a long time and something like this isn’t going to make people pay up anytime soon. Yes there are achievements, but me personally; I’d take full access to multiplayer over achievements any day. Ask yourself this, do you have quick pleasure with oneself or long-time pleasure with multiple people? I know which one I’d take. Not everyone has an Xbox 360 that plays today's PC games. If you have a Gold account then add an extra 1 to the score, if not then you will probably feel like most of the other PC gaming players, pissed.

Ihr wollt bestimmt wissen, ob Universe at War rockt.

WindowsGameSpy
In the end, there's a lot to love about Universe at War. The sheer exhilaration one gets when watching horribly damaged walkers amble into an enemy base, exploding and taking out half the opponent's infrastructure can't be underestimated. Unfortunately, a poorly designed single-player campaign can't help but limit the game's appeal and the multiplayer, while awesome to play, has that Games for Windows LIVE nonsense tied around its neck like an anchor. Perhaps enough people will feel that this game is enough to get them to pick up a Gold account and increase the currently paltry number of players online, otherwise all the galaxy-frying power the Hierarchy can muster won't be enough to save Petroglyph's baby.

Overall I'd have to say this is a pretty generic game. I've always loved the RTS genre, and it is still one of the few things that gets me back on the PC after getting hooked on gamerscore. However, there aren't really any innovations here and I didn't like the story or fall in love with any of the races, so this one definitely won't be a mainstay of the RTS genre like Command and Conquer or Warcraft/Starcraft have been over the years.

Xbox 360GameSpot
Universe at War absolutely bursts with interesting units and neat twists on genre standbys. It's hard to not appreciate a real-time strategy game that lets you outfit hulking robotic walkers the way you want and send them into battle. Yet despite its awesome mechanical arachnids, the game gets in its own way by failing to fix some obvious problems present in the PC version, as well as adding a major one of its own: namely, a frame rate that dips frequently into the single digits. In a genre that relies on quick thinking and smooth command of the battlefield, it's an inexcusable issue. Throw in some smaller bugs, and you have an entertaining game that squandered its own enormous potential with terrible quality assurance.

Xbox 360IGN
From the gossamer winged Interceptors of the Masari to the hulking crimson Walkers of the Hierarchy, Universe at War is chock full of well-designed units, structures and ideas. However, Universe's technical problems, precision control issues and hackneyed storyline dull its shine, resulting in a less-than-great RTS experience.

I’m capable of having fun with a lot of games I love RTS’s, but when something is done poorly from a talented bunch of developers I really have to shake my head and ask “why?” In my opinion they were better off trying to port over Empire at War and it’s expansion pack.

So, as to whether or not Petroglyph Games and Sega redefined console RTS games: not exactly. They took great new steps in understanding the control problems that gamers have and took those into account, which is great, but the fact that the frame rate speed looks more like a slide show than an actual game really makes the gameplay more frustrating than anything. If that’s not something that bothers you and you are okay with losing missions on account of imprecision, and you like playing online with the only four other people that are there, then Universe at War might be your game. If not, then allow PC to stick to the RTS games. It’s better for everyone.

Xbox 360Worth Playing
Universe at War: Earth Assault is a fantastic game marred by technical issues aplenty. The unwieldy and uncomfortable controls alone would make it difficult to recommend this title for anyone who could possibly play the PC version, but when combined with the slowdown, freezing, dropped connections and countless other issues, it's just not worth the trouble, even for those whose PCs can barely run Solitaire. If Petroglyph's upcoming patch manages to fix both the slowdown issues and the online play, Universe at War could become a game potentially worth playing, but until that time comes, Universe at War isn't worth the frustration and difficulty needed to actually enjoy it.
60
Xbox 360GameSpy
In the end, we do like Universe at War: Earth Assault. We like the IP, the whole monster-movie feel of it, and the neat twist that the asymmetrical units, upgrades, and micro-management choices add to the RTS formula. But the 360 version's clunky control scheme and savage technical problems bring the game down, and none of the key issues from the PC release have been changed. The problems here don't outweigh the fun, but the margin is very thin.
60
Xbox 360TeamXbox
It’s too bad that technical issues wear down Universe at War. There are some genuinely good ideas in the game, and RTS fans will see a lot of familiarity mixed with uniqueness. But the whole experience of Universe at War ends up being one big chore. If the single player is dull, and the multiplayer is broken, all you’ve got left is playing skirmish mode by yourself. And that will get old after a while anyway. Universe at War: Earth Assault is not the breakthrough RTS game for the consoles. Not by a long shot.

WindowsComputer Bild Spiele

Universe at War could have been a good RTS, but another conversion from PC to console results in a failure. The controls are a brilliant crossover from the PC version, but there are too many issues that make this game verging on the unplayable.
50
Xbox 360Avid Gamer
For my money, where Universe at War really fails is in offering anything convincingly original or interesting over and above the games that so obviously influenced it. The fact that the Westwood Studio veterans involved are mentioned on the back of the box suggests that this nostalgia for past classics was the driving force behind its design, and for some this will doubtlessly be more than enough to ensure a purchase. If you’re looking for something that has moved on from the glory days of C&C, however, I’m not sure this’ll be the title to do so. Add to this the difficulties clearly encountered during the port from PC to the 360, and it’s likely that those not instantly filled with enthusiasm will loose interest and patience long before the story has played out.
50
Xbox 360Game Informer Magazine
It's a shame this port was released in a worse technical sate than many beta builds I've played, because the core design of Universe at War (minus the lame by-the-numbers scripted campaign) is quite good. As it is, the best thing we can hope for is that Sega releases a patch to make it possible for players to experience what the game has to offer without constant single-digit framerates.
50
Xbox 360MS Xbox World
Universe at War at times feels too simplistic and yet overwhelming with confusion at other points in the game as you are trying to keep track of multiple things and constantly having to shift your view of the map. RTS fans may find some enjoyment with the online game modes, if they can find a match that is. What is more weird about this is that the game is supposed to support cross-platform play as well, so PC gamers can play against us Xbox 360 gamers. So you would expect a couple of more games to regularly be available to jump into. Another hindering point to the online is the game's frame rate, which can drop dramatically when there is a lot of action on the screen. Universe at War in my opinion is not worth the cash, RTS fans should keep their eyes locked on the Command & Conquer series for now, with any luck we may even be able to still expect a port of the more intense looking RTS game, World in Conflict.

It’s sad to think about what could have been with this game, since there was obviously some thought into some aspects, but the rest of it is so overly generic that it just doesn’t stand out from other games. The art, the audio, the level design, it’s all just sorta “there”, and feels creatively bankrupt. Petroglyph has a chance to fix these issues in an expansion pack, but for now I wouldn’t recommend this game unless you’re in dire need of strategy on a pad.
