Uridium is going to generate vast numbers of letters to our John Riglar pleading for infinite lives, Pokes, tips and tricks. This will get very het up and competitive - what does that all prove?
That Uridium is wonderful.
A game hasn't caused such a stir in the C + VG office since the arrival of Exploding Fist! Andrew Braybrook's Uridium is simply the best 64 game we've seen since Fist. It's good looking , sounds great and the action comes thick and fast. You won't drop your joystick for days after you've loaded Uridium into your 64.
Once again our Solar System is under the threat of extinction from an unknown enemy and once again it's up to you to prevent such a cataclysm. Uridium, the follow up to Andrew Braybrook's previous offering Paradroid, puts you in the pilot seat of the latest Manta class Space Fighter and straight into the action with a press of the fire button. Your objective is to destroy all fifteen Dreadnoughts by disrupting their interstellar power units, thus causing a chain reaction which eventually vapourises them. However, things are not so easy (are they ever?) since the enemy's defence systems must be successfully avoided, or disposed of if the situation arises, before you can land on the Dreadnought's master runway, enter the engine room and prime the ship destruction sequence.
It's hard but it's also fair and, by avoiding the linear progression of the shmup genre, places the onus for success firmly in your hands. There are elements of Defender, Xevious and Gradius all thrown into the mix, but the end result is something unique and a testament to developer Andrew Braybrook's ingenuity. Quibble all you like about the VC's inflated prices - I'll probably agree with you - but if you genuinely resent paying a few quid (or Euros) for Uridium, you may very well be insane.
Don't bother with imitators - there's only one Uridium. Get it.
Uridium has to be the ultimate shooting match. So remember - in space nobody can hear you scream... but your folks will tell you to shut up every time your ship gets shot to smithereens!
I can’t really say that I was looking forward to seeing this on the Spectrum as so many games C64 games die when they’re converted for our faithful Sinclair. Thankfully there is still plenty of life in Uridium ZX — admittedly it has lost its colour and some of its sound but it’s one of the best shoot em ups around. The speed at which the game plays is truly amazing, the screen scrolls at a tremendous rate and nothing slows down when a load of nasties come on the screen. The graphics are excellent, and everything is superbly drawn. The sound too is top hole: the tune on the title screen is marvellous and there are some worthy sound effects during the game. If you are a shoot em up freak then go out and buy this, you’re not going to see better for a long while.
Uridium has recently come out on the Spectrum, where most of the original is retained, but without colour or as good animation and speed. Perhaps they'll get around to the Amstrad version soon. Uridium got the resurgence in shoot 'em ups going, let's hope it lasts.
Semplici. Maledetti. Da assuefazione totale. Solo tre vite a disposizione. Quindici livelli. Continue infiniti. Ore di sonno zero.
The shoot'em up was the last type of game you would expect to make the running in the Best Games league at the beginning of '86. But here it is - a shoot'em up better than anything that has come before that your collection will be pretty dull without it.
After finding every possible way to destroy their ship on the first level, they switched the DTV off. Their review was quite simplistic: "It's hard," they said. Marc would agree.
A good game for all you zap addicts, with excellent graphics, good sound, and real 'feel' to it!
Smooth scrolling and sensible colour selection leaves you to worry about the action rather than the graphics. An excellent conversion of a superb arcade game.
Uridium isn't a terrible game - it's just extremely basic. There are so many better shooters on the Virtual Console so it is hard to recommend to anyone other than fans of the original.
To be honest, Uridium hasn't aged too well. It's still a very playable shoot-em-up with some inventive mechanics, but the presentation betrays the game's age. Later C64 games in the same genre looked and sounded better, and some offered more depth, although few were as unique as this one. Think carefully before you spend your Wii Points on this title, but if you're a fan of shoot-em-ups and are looking for something a bit different from the norm, you could certainly do worse than Uridium.
