PSPPSP Minis (Sep 13, 2011)
Vanguard II’s concept can be fun if done well. We’ve actually seen it in the Mini Metara, and Will Wright’s first game, Raid on Bungeling Bay, used it as well. But Vanguard II just doesn’t execute it all that well. It’s not terrible, but it’s not nearly as fun as it could be, and the pace is far too languid.
ArcadeAll Game Guide (1998)
Though it has much more detailed graphics than the original Vanguard, Vanguard II lacks the charm and novelty of the original game's "race at breakneck speed through tightly-confined tunnels" element. In losing those tunnels, Vanguard II becomes just another scrolling shooter with pretty scenery -- and even then, not as pretty (and not as fun) as similar arcade games like Attack Of The Savage Bees and Star Force.
PSPDefunct Games (Oct 25, 2011)
Beyond the boring stages, I found myself constantly fighting the game's tricky control scheme. The original game worked so well because of the elegant gameplay, but the same can't be said about this sequel. Here's a perfect example of a company fixing what wasn't broken. With the possible exception of later Samurai Shodown sequels, Vanguard II is SNK's most disappointing arcade sequel. You're better off sticking with the 1981 original.
