Vexx is not for the casual gamer. This is the “final exam” of platform games and easily makes my list of the top five most difficult console games released to date and probably takes the #1 slot for the Xbox. Admittedly, much of the difficulty is directly related to the flawed camera system, but even when the camera is working the game is still plenty hard.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with Vexx. It's incredibly fun, creative, and challenging. The visuals are great. The sound is quite good. Aside from the bothersome camera and the somewhat weak framerate, Vexx is a force to be reckoned with. If you enjoy platforming games, you simply must play this game. And it's multiplatform, so no matter what system(s) you own, you can still play it. Go check it out now!

Every developer must have a mascot game. Nintendo has Zelda and Mario. Sony has Sly Cooper and Ratchet & Clank. And Sega has Sonic. Now Acclaim can join the ranks of those developers for making one of the most enjoyable multi-console action/adventure games ever released.

Vexx was a pleasant surprise for me that I enjoyed very much. I always like a game that has hidden areas and enough challenges (or shall I say frustrations - ala the Castle!) to keep me into the game. The graphics at times were beautiful and the musical score fit the game well. Even though the storyline seems a bit weak since there are only a limited number of cinematic scenes, the game does hold your interest right up until the end. I have a feeling that this little bad ass Vexx would knock the cap right off of Mario! I recommend taking a closer look at Vexx, especially if you like puzzles, platforms, platforms, and platforms.

All right I’m going to get this out of the way right now, because if I don’t I’m going to pop. This game is vexing. Ha…Ha. Get it? Bad jokes aside VEXX is one of the hardest games I’ve played outside of Contra (new or old – without the good old up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, select, start that first one was rougher than a bowl of chili on that boat ride across the gulf).

Vexx is a good platforming game for the Xbox, anyone who plays this game will enjoy it. It is a shame that a little more time didn't go into trying to make the game unique. If you have any children, and need a good game for them, check this out, as they will have a blast with it.

Due to its dark story and blistering difficulty, Vexx really isn't a game for the masses. On that same not, it's a dream come true for adults and hardcore platforming fans. In every conceivable way, Vexx assaults the player with brutally challenging goals. So, if you tire of extensive tutorials until the end, look no further.

There is great potential here, and Vexx is a game that I would certainly recommend to friends, purely for the level design, fun (if somewhat repetitive) combat, humour, subtle sound effects, and sheer size. Mario? Not quite, but I wouldn't call Vexx a pushover.

If this game had just a little more fine-tuning, it would get the highest honors. As it stands, it is still one of the better platforming experience you'll have this year.

Fortunately, there are some inventive gameplay elements, such as jumping around 2D paintings and setting the time of day with a magical sundial, that will serve to pique your interest each time you throw it in. If you're pining for a decent Xbox platformer, this is it.

While Vexx may not be as original as it might make itself out to be, it borrows enough from a true high water mark game, Mario 64, to be very playable and easy to look at making it a solid rental more than anything else. Aside from the camera, the conventions have been nailed, unfortunately, most gamers want a bit more than that.

XboxIGN
The true strength of Vexx is in the patforming and puzzle elements. The game is good and a lot of fun, but misses out on greatness simply because there wasn't enough thought or daring put into the design. It's challenging at times, but the game is a bit unfocused. Still, the puzzle elements are a pleasure and the gameplay mechanics are simple and somewhat addictive. There are lots of little faults to Vexx but it's a good game, if not a great one.

Vexx could’ve been worlds better if not for its nauseatingly inconsistent camera system. But in spite of that it is still a entirely distinctive and original 3D platformer with loads of entertaining challenges and exceptional artistic direction. Platform junkies should certainly check this game out as it offers up a fairly long quest and is an overall rewarding experience. But for gamers who just want their fix of jumping from platform to platform a rental or two should suffice.

The platform genre is dying. At least, that's what everyone believes. The truth is, the genre simply has grown stale over the past few years with cookie-cutter revisions of the same ol' junk. But 2002 saw a change as many unique and fun platformers hit the three big consoles. Though Vexx is coming a little late to the party, it's Acclaim's attempt to revitalize a once powerful genre. While Vexx won't astound you with any groundbreaking new invention, it's still a platform-heavy game that will likely satisfy most platform fans. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it doesn't blow out the tire either.

One of the plus sides in Vexx is a nice variety of puzzles and mini-games. After the first 2 or 3 worlds, wraith-hearts are no longer found out in the open, but instead are found deep within side-areas. Some of these areas have tough puzzles to figure out, others have fun mini-games to complete, but all of them will give you the same prize upon completion, a wraith-heart. One of the best mini-games comes early on in the game where Vexx is challenged to a sumo-wrestling match by an enemy 10 times his size. Knocking him out of the ring 3 times is the only way to achieve victory, but your opponent may not be satisfied if he loses.

GameCubeGame Chronicles
Overall, Vexx is an entertaining platformer that would appeal to the gamer that is looking for something different, but in the end it seems like a darker version of every other platform game. There is a huge potential to this game and it would probably have been better if it was transformed into a fantasy RPG and given the royal treatment. Who knows; there were problems with Summoner and Summoner 2 was totally redesigned into a surprise hit. Maybe the same could be done with Vexx.

Vexx is a fun and challenging game to play. And a nice addition to the action-platform family. But a bunch of minor disappointments bundled together keeps it from achieving excellence. Hopefully the bad will be addressed in the sequel if one is in the works. No wacky camera, no jumping framerate, no collect’em all gameplay. But until then I could only recommend a rental. And if after the rental Vexx floats your boat. Go ahead & buy it.

While it wouldn't be smart to give too much credit to Vexx there's nothing really new here, save for some neat time-based puzzles the game is far more engaging than you'd figure from first glance. The backdrops are uniformly pretty, and while you have little idea where to go next at times, the challenge never graduates to frustration-level.

Vexx is nothing more than your run-of-the-mill platformer. Though the level design and beautiful visuals are something to admire, the audio, plot and general lack of originality leaves something to be desired. If you’re in dire need of a platforming fix and you’ve already beaten all the big titles, you might want to check Vexx out. Who knows, you might find something you like.`

With crisp graphics, completely derivative gameplay, and control and sound that are, at best, a mixed bag, Vexx ends up as a game that deserves nothing more than a rental, if that. There is nothing particularly terrible about Vexx; it's just that we've all played it before, 7 years ago. Anyone looking for a good platform game would be wise to stick with Ratchet and Clank.

New types of video game characters, genre alterations, and imaginary locations are being invented each and every day. This year, like last year, and the year before, and the year before that...we've seen companies attempt to make the best out of what they had to work with in introducing their "original" design. For Acclaim, this year their idea of platform innovation has arrived in the small but brave new age hero for the twenty first century that'll take you from one leap to the next in the continuously expanding wide world of Vexx.

Vexx is not a terrible game. Yes, the graphics are a touch dated. Yes, the mechanics are familiar, perhaps to a fault. And, yes, the sound design leaves much to be desired. But what undercuts Vexx the most is the increased level of polish and innovation other recent 3D platformers have brought to the table. Had it been released just a year earlier, it probably would've fared much better.

It's surprising how relevant Nintendo's groundbreaking Super Mario 64 has remained in the six years since its release. Sure, other 3D platformers have refined the formula, such as Rare's Banjo-Kazooie or Insomniac's Ratchet & Clank, but the presentation and core mechanics haven't been changed radically. All roads still lead to Mario. In fact, Acclaim's latest 3D platformer, Vexx, plays almost like a tribute to Super Mario 64, re-creating much of that game's structure and play mechanics, though with a darker, moodier visual style. To say it's on par with Nintendo's 3D masterpiece would be overselling it, though. Vexx does little more than imitate, which just isn't enough these days.

The game follows the adventures of a pencil-necked, slightly furry lad named Vexx. (The trailing "x" is silent.) Vexx has anger management issues, perhaps partially due to the fact that his people have been enslaved by the Shadow Wraiths and forced to work in mines. One day Vexx rebels against a guard, which leads to the murder of his grandfather. Enraged, he sneaks out into the night to seek a weapon of retribution. Thus he finds the legendary Astani War Talons, the only weapon that can destroy Shadow Wraiths. With the Talons now permanently fused to his arms, Vexx sets out to save the world of Astara from the Shadow Wraith menace. Or, at least, collect lots of Wraithhearts. I'll get to that shortly.

For whatever reason, platformers are a hot commodity right now. Or at least game companies act like they're hot, since they don't always sell terribly well. (Witness poor Sly Cooper, a brilliant game which has garnered lackluster sales.) In any case, Acclaim's latest entry into the venerable genre is called Vexx, and, like many platform heroes, Vexx has sass. That sass, unfortunately, is not enough to raise the PS2 version of Vexx above mediocrity. While Vexx eked out a win on the Xbox, its PlayStation 2 outing is held back by considerably worse graphics, longer load times, and stiffer competition.

XboxGameSpy
You can do worse than Vexx. While it's uninspired and very rough around the edges, it still manages to exercise your platforming muscles in a not altogether unpleasureable way. Xbox is not exactly overflowing with quality platformers, so if that's your only system then Vexx could be a decent choice.
30
PlayStation 2Eurogamer.net (UK)
If you've skipped to the final paragraph looking for a quick assessment, then here it is: Vexx is a charmless, shoddy, unfinished, unplayable mess and does nothing that a dozen other games haven't done infinitely better. If you're going to try and compete in an overpopulated genre, at least make it stand out.
25
XboxThe Next Level
Adding it all up, the sum of Vexx's parts leaves you with a very unimpressive experience. Normally this would be my cue to recommend that fans of the genre give the game a look, but to be honest, if you're a big platformer fan (and if you're not, I would hope you haven't read this far), you've probably played enough of them to see this title for how incredibly average (and in many cases, below average) it is. So to that end, I say that even if you're a fan of the genre, you should really look elsewhere. I hear that Mario fellow has an exotic new outing a few places up the rack.

We're sure Vexx will find a few fans, but then several people also claimed to like Turok Evolution (this must have been a tasteless and ill-conceived publicity stunt or something). Either way, Vexx offers nothing big, nothing clever, nothing new and certainly nothing to warrant parting with your hard-earned cash. In all honesty, the official press release says it better than we ever could: "Vexx underscores the vision and commitment of Acclaim." Yes... yes it does.
