If you got bored of the franchise babble in the first couple of paragraphs and skipped to the end for the final word, I understand, and here it is: Victoria 2 is already better than anything Paradox has done in a very long time, and it has potential in all the right areas: all that’s really needed is some tweaking of formulae and the fleshing out of some weak spots on the map. Saying that it stands head-and-shoulders above all of the scant competition for grand-strategy kingship almost goes without saying.
Victoria II is not a game meant for everybody. It’s geared mainly towards lovers of real time strategy games who prefer the ‘strategy’ elements to the ‘real time’ ones. Most people would probably shy away from this type of title, which is a real shame, because it is a rare gem of elegant intricacies and shameless complexities. Victoria II is also a nearly inexhaustible game since the enormous number of factions and probable variables ensure that no two campaigns will ever be the same. It’s really hard to find something to criticize in such a well made package, but perhaps a little voice acting or probably a shift to more tactical battle screens during combat (much like those seen in Commander: Conqueror of the Americas or in Empire: Total War) would have been nice. Nevertheless, if you love challenging strategy games, Victoria II is a must have.

Patience is a virtue in Victoria II, and if you have it in abundance, then you may want to try the multi-player component. The single-player is basically one huge campaign, and with so many choices and variables, how much longer do you want to drag this out? Enter the multi-player mode. It then becomes a board game, not unlike Life. Against the right opponent, under the right circumstances it works, but it’s long, involved, intense, and largely unrewarding. I much preferred playing against the A.I. Victoria II incorporates challenging strategy and sim elements with enough flexibility to satisfy any weasel-beating gaming goof.
Victoria 2 is one of those games where it's easy to expect more from it than it can actually give. Giving its dedication to history, depth, strategy etc... fans can get a bit carried away. Newcomers to the franchise may find it hard to get to grips with at first, but the tutorials do a decent job of easing you in, and as we said, the more you play the more you learn! This is another respectable addition to the Paradox roster, and despite being pretty good already, it can only get better as time goes on.

Victoria II is a wonderful strategy game, but its problems take what would have been a perfect Grand Strategy and turn it into merely a great game with the potential to be a classic. It’s the kind of game in which you sit back, enjoy a refreshing beverage and take the time to consider the long-term implications of your policies, and it does this better than even the original Victoria, to say nothing of other games that cover the period. It’s been a busy month for strategy gamers with the release of StarCraft 2, but players looking for a smart, engaging game that rewards patience and experimentation instead of button-mashing frenzies should grab a copy of Victoria II. Priced at $39.95, it will take uncounted hours for you to play through all the strategic possibilities it offers.
Victoria 2 is one of the most accessible grand strategy titles currently available. Condensing its huge variety of options into an intuitive interface goes a long way to encouraging more players to give this sub-genre a try. The lack of originality in regards to the time period is slightly disappointing, but despite this it’s still a great game.
Not a game for the faint of heart at all and not a casual sit down and walk away from game. It is deep and grand in its scope. Make sure you play the tutorials, or drop by the forums for some pointers.
Victoria 2’s strengths lies in it’s wealth of opportunity; problem finding and solving large and small scale political issues, near-endless opportunity for strategic use of finances and more than two hundred playable nations, these are the aspects which will undoubtedly sell the game to the hardcore management strategy gamers. The additional detail available is a two-edged sword, welcoming to those already involved and potentially bewildering beginners, and as such Victoria 2 doesn’t make the best entry-level management strategy game. A complex and involving game it is then, but one for those who not only understand, but relish in the demands that will be placed upon them.
While it isn't revolutionary enough to win over those who have found Paradox's grand-strategy efforts too grueling in the past, Victoria II is a more accessible version of this demanding style of game. That said, this remains a challenging, intricate experience that won't be for everyone. It still hits you with a learning curve that initially looks like the north face of K2 to the newbie who has never played this sort of game before. The revolt issue is also frustrating when it pops up, especially because it generally does so after you've invested a few decades into a campaign. Still, this is a leap forward from its predecessor, and it does show that Paradox has been listening to its critics and is tying to make its games as mainstream as possible without turning off the hardcore historical strategy fans that are the company's bread and butter.
As impossibly complex as it is deep, but running your own empire proves to be hugely engrossing for those that put in the man hours.

With just a few minor problems and a looping soundtrack, the game offers a fun and satisfying experience. The replay value will keep fans coming back for more, though a lot of people might be put off by the steep learning curve and the patience required in becoming a true and virtuous ruler, sweet talking politician, or an egomaniacal tyrant.
Victoria newbies will definitely look upon the game with confused glares at first, and even after going through the extensive tutorial, might find themselves scratching their heads with confusion more often than not. Victoria veterans however will be pleased with the interface overhaul and streamlined menus, which helps alleviate frustration and ensures satisfaction.
For what it's worth, Victoria II is a one hell of a strategy game, but it's also one hell of an endeavor. While undertaking the game's complicated interface and gameplay can prove daunting for most, those who stick with it won't be disappointed. Whether rewriting history or re-enacting it, Victoria II is a worthy investment for sure.
A typical game will take hours to play, so you are certainly getting your money’s worth when you fork out the cash for the game. Indeed, with such a huge number of playable nations to choose from, gamers could be playing this for months without even having played all the nations. The replayability is endless. There are plenty of “what if I had have done that instead” thoughts during the games. Indeed after playing for awhile and thoroughly learning the mechanics, the game drew me into that dreaded ‘one more turn’ frame of mind, despite the game being a real-time strategy. If you have some time to put into Victoria II, you will find this quite rewarding. But if you are looking for a game with a “wham-bam, thank you ma’am” attitude, you may have to look elsewhere for your gaming fix.
Grading was difficult. My reasoning follows. It avoids an F due to high concept and ineffable "feel", misses an A for bugs and dodges a C because Paradox will fix them.
As a strategy game, Victoria II frustrates me. It is an orgy of detail for detail's sake, yet the information I really want never seems to be at hand. The decisions I make seem mostly inconsequential, changing the game only by a slow process of accretion. Modeling has overtaken game design. Watching Victoria II is hypnotic and frequently awe-inspiring. Unfortunately, you only occasionally might want to play it.

I found the game to be burdened by its promises even while it delivered on all of them. The size and scope is daunting to a first timer but once you trudge through to manual and learning of the basics, the game really comes into its own. I found myself speeding up the time just to see what obstacles would pop up next and which of my policies I was able to get through. This game is not for everyone, but this game was not meant for everyone I think. Fans of the genre will find themselves guiding their country well into many nights and never even noticing the lost sleep.
