Viewtiful Joe is one for the ages. It is a completely original game that features a brilliant merger of unique gameplay elements, a memorable cast of characters and some very spiffy visual polish. Enough can’t be said about Atsushi Inaba and the team behind the game; they truly achieved their goal of creating a title that is an out and out joy to play. Granted, it is extremely demanding and you may find yourself wanting to stick the game disc in the microwave on more than occasion, but like a best friend, you just can’t find it in your heart to stay mad at Viewtiful Joe. So strap on your V-Watch and get ready to partake in one of the most challenging, fulfilling and just plain entertaining games to be released in a long, long time. All together now... Henshin a go go baby!

Viewtiful Joe is a stunning example of how creativity can blend seamlessly with gameplay without sacrificing one or the other. The top-notch gameplay coupled with out of this world superhero stunts is the freshest take on a classic side-scrolling action seen in years.

If you are looking for a new GameCube game to check out, Viewtiful Joe is a solid title that offers a lot of variety in its gameplay and will entertain you for hours and hours. The art style of the game is amazing and the cel-shading compliments the gameplay rather than being the only attraction as is the case with so many cel-shaded games lately. The controls are tight, the gameplay is deep, the graphics are gorgeous, and there is enough gameplay here that Viewtiful Joe is worth more than just a weekend rental. Make it a Blockbuster night if you must, but Viewtiful Joe is one game that you can buy blind and not be disappointed.

Viewtiful Joe is a wonderful game. Seven episodes don't seem like much at first, but the addictive scoring system, ferocious challenge, and wealth of extras will have average players wrapped up for a while. The game really never gets dull, which is a testament to its flexible design. No doubt, I'll be pulling VJ out years down the line to relive its epic boss battles and funny one-liners. By that time, I hope, plenty of little Joes will have entered the world. Do your part. Henshin a buy-buy.

The game mechanics are solid and innovative, leaving you with many inventive ways in which to scrap with your foe. The graphics are simply phenomenal, creating a look and feel that teeters more towards art than simply backgrounds and characters. The weakest link, the sound, while lacking a bit in the music department, provides an ample background with some of the most incredible sound effects to be created for a game. It's this union that makes Viewtiful Joe near perfect in its creation and I honestly couldn't find any real faults within it. If you're in the market for an action platformer, Viewtiful Joe is easily the game for you and easily redeems Capcom's good name. All things said and done, life is, indeed, viewtiful!

Viewtiful has been let out of its GameCube-only prison for the first time with its PS2 debut. (Don't worry, Megaman was totally his bitch on the inside.) Not just a console-to-console port, Viewtiful has a new unlockable character, Dante from Capcom's Devil May Cry franchise. Other than that, the PS2 version features the same gorgeous cel-shaded graphics, elegantly simple system of game play and hilarious story line. OK, besides the inclusion of Dante, it's pretty much a port. What can we say? Lying comes easily to us.

Viewtiful Joe manages to bring back that feeling of sheer fun, from a time when gamers didn't mind playing the same levels over and over again, just to be entertained and have a good time. It also manages to live up to and exceed the standards of today, all while maintaining its completely original style. Capcom has a new franchise on its hands.

It might seem like a no-brainer to praise "Viewtiful Joe" simply because it looks so damn cool, and for the fact that it's not another cookie-cutter sequel or retread of a tired franchise. But here at "X-Play," we like to tell it to ya straight: "Viewtiful Joe" lives up to the hype. At a time when most publishers, Capcom included, seem content to churn out the same old stuff, the developers at Team Viewtiful have succeeded in blending the classic with new to create a unique game thats one of the best of the year.

Viewtiful Joe is just what the doctor ordered. It’s on mass production and patients are eating it up. Part of the Capcom 5 (which is actually 4, because one game got cancelled) made exclusively for the GameCube (P.N.03, Viewtiful Joe, Killer 7, Resident Evil 4), Viewtiful Joe is a statement by Capcom, a very bold statement. The side-scrolling action may not be for everybody, but I’m sure those that don’t take to the side-scrolling action very well would be entertained by VJ for a little while. The game is pretty short, but there are different difficulty levels that you can run through, and are FUN to play back through as well. Viewtiful Joe is awesome, a AAA title to add to the GameCube line-up.

A powerful effort, Viewtiful Joe's only flaws are its typically threadbare adolescent fantasy plot and short duration. These minor gripes are ground to dust by its strengths, and Viewtiful Joe's visionary extrapolation of old-school gameplay proves that it's not about what you do, but how you do it.

Viewtiful Joe is just plain cool. The game's look and action totally blew me away. I was really surprised at how much depth there was in the fighting system. Though it looks like the focus of the game is beating the snot out of everything in sight, learning how and when to optimally use Joe's powers and moves was a deep experience that I was not expecting. The game is up there with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker as one of the best GCN games of year. Now there's a surprise I wasn't expecting at all.

One of the finest games to hit the streets last year was Capcom's Viewtiful Joe on GameCube. It was a unique, refreshing 2D action title that boasted incredibly cool visuals and gameplay to match. Thankfully, Capcom has seen fit to share the love by bringing Joe's crazy antics -- plus a few pretty special extras -- to the PS2 for the bargain price of $29.99.

Joe—the man, the legend, the hero? Joe—just your average young man who loves the fictional Captain Blue and his girlfriend Silvia—almost equally! One day, while on a most unusual date for a Captain Blue movie, Joe witnesses not only the apparent death of his hero, but also the kidnapping of his girlfriend. Unbelievably, the onscreen villain reaches out and nabs Silvia! And, just as incredibly, Joe is able to follow her into movieland in order rescue the damsel. Captain Blue even returns from the afterlife to help Joe learn how to be a hero.

Viewtiful Joe is not a perfect game. There are some issues with a lack of save points, an uninspired soundtrack, and collision detection on later difficulty levels. These are all very minor issues, by far overshadowed by the pure brilliance that is Viewtiful Joe. This game’s combination of excellent presentation, innovative design, brilliant pacing, spot on play mechanics, longevity, and flat out badass style make this a must own for gamers, if not the best overall title to hit shelves this holiday season. I congratulate Capcom for showing the world that you don’t need fancy 3D environments and gratuitous gore to show gamers a great time. In the words of Joe himself, “Henshin-a-go-go-baby”!

Announced only a year prior to its release, the second title in the Capcom 5, Viewtiful Joe, is upon us. From the director of Resident Evil 2 and Devil May Cry, Hideki Kamiya, Viewtiful Joe is quite possibly the most fun I’ve had playing an action title in a long, long time. The visual style of the game is like nothing we’ve seen before and every bit of the game’s presentation makes the tongue moist with saliva. The gameplay is something we’re all used to in side-scrolling beat-em-ups, except it's not. The new VFX system is something every gamer has been dreaming of and Capcom delivers with amazing detail and astoundingly smooth control. After only a year of waiting, Viewtiful Joe is not only everything you’ve been hoping for, it’s everything you didn't even know you should.

Capcom has also integrated a purchasing system, which you can use to purchase new moves, more lives, weapons, etc. Of course, you need a certain number of tokens, earned throughout each level in ordered to purchase items. Despite the fact that many enemies are recycled throughout the game, new puzzles and obstacles help keep the game fresh. VJ offers plenty of replay value in the form of two additional characters, Silvia and Captain Blue, each with their own unique moves, powers, and altered story lines. On top of the two bonus characters, you can either play the game in Kid or Adult mode. Now, Joe must go.

Viewtiful Joe is like a mix of Spider-Man, a Power Ranger, Sponge Bob, Dawson Leery, and Bruce Lee all in one guy. And he’s now one of my favorite hero’s. From visuals to sound right down to it’s dull but enjoyable storyline VJ delivers an experience I would suggest everyone try once. As you should know by now, BUY THIS GAME! If you don’t like it GCA will give you back your $50 dollar ourselves…ok maybe not. But try it anyway. There is not one other game where you can punch a bullet in slow-mo, right back at the numbskull who tried to put that bullet in your rear end. It’s simple but cool style provides the perfect hook for action gamers, and 10 minuets of gameplay indicate that the game has truck loads of substance to backup the style. All I can ask for now is a sequel with more stages.

Unlike many games that get put in the hype spotlight, Viewtiful Joe has proven itself worthy. With its unique style and old-school gameplay, Joe rises above the piles of cliché games that line the shelves of game stores. The game’s hardcore, retro style gameplay will appeal to anybody in need of a real challenge. The quirky story will draw in those who want to laugh out loud at their game. The classic beat-em-up action will captivate players who want to take a trip to yesteryear as well as those who have never tried the genre before. Viewtiful Joe is truly a great game and deserves all the hype and praise it gets.

On Nintendo systems, there are very few third-party titles that will drive hardware sales, or become "killer apps" for a platform. Capcom should be given credit for bringing Nintendo a potentially huge title (and possible even a future franchise) to their console, as Joe looks to be the hit that Nintendo needs to show that third-party exclusives can be just as compelling as Nintendo's original titles. Joe is getting a lot of hype, and every bit of it is well-deserved. There's little more one can say that hasn't been covered in the vast coverage and praise already given the game except a simple "Buy It".

Now PS2 owners can learn what GameCube owners have known for many months: The world needs VFX powers in a bad way. You could use mach speed to make Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid end faster, or slow-mo to savor every second of Jet Li’s Hero. Though I won’t be using these powers to aid my movie-watching anytime soon, every second I spent with them in Viewtiful Joe’s Movieland was like breathing in a thick fog of condensed joy.

Gamecubes are now $99.99 and Viewtiful Joe is only $39.99 new. I will say that it is totally worth the cash to pick up the underrated system to play this great achievement alone. And then of course you can pick up cheap copies of Zelda, Metroid and Eternal Darkness while you're at it.

GameCubeIGN
At its heart, Viewtiful Joe is about as old school as a game could possibly get in today's world of free-roaming, 3D titles. Aside from sticking to a beautifully flat, cel-shaded rendering style, VJ's gameplay is also a throwback to the days of side-scrolling, beat-'em-up, action platformers. Comic-styled backgrounds scroll in 3D as your path turns and bends around corners, but gamers will never get sidetracked with excessive exploration -- just keep pressing to the left or right and fighting your way through hordes of zany foes (such as tutu-wearing robots with gasmasks), and you'll advance through city streets, lavish palaces, sludgy sewers, underwater submarines, and other awesome environments that we'd rather not spoil.

I pride myself on not succumbing to the gaming forces to purchase a GameCube. Sure Nintendo has a proven track record for delivering solid and innovative titles for many years, but many gamers like myself have a more mature taste for games that the GameCube has yet to satisfy. When Viewtiful Joe hit the shelves for the GC, I had hopes (maybe fantasies) Capcom would eventually publish it for other systems. Until now, that dream seemed lost. Viewtiful Joe for PS2 is an exciting non-stop action 2D/3D side-scroller unlike any other before it. That coupled with bonus features exclusive to the PS2 version makes VJ brilliantly entertaining to play!

From the moment Capcom announced Viewtiful Joe just one year ago, old-school gaming fans the world over knew they were in for quite a treat. The occasional screenshots and video clips released over the months only served to confirm that fact. A fun, fast paced side scrolling beat ‘em up that is quite genius. Even if you only rent it, I’m sure you will end up buying it later. It may have no multiplayer, and can get frustrating at times, but I feel this is a game everybody should play at least once.

From the very start of this review you can tell that Viewtiful Joe tries to mix old-school gaming with the standards and technology of today. From it's difficulty and 2D side-scrolling nature to the cel-shading and crisp visuals, Viewtiful Joe succeeds in combining the past with the present, and gives a small taste of what the future of video games holds. Depending on your video game tastes you may find Viewtiful Joe to be one of the best GameCube games to date, or you might possibly find it on the boring side. Regardless, the only way to know for sure is to try it, and GameCube owner out there should do just that, even if it only means a rental.

But in the end, does it really matter' Capcom got this game right, and should be praised as one of the elite. It goes without saying that Capcom's fabled "Fantastic Five" for the GameCube didn't quite have the impact that its fan base had hoped for. Originally heralded as one of the most powerful reasons to own a Nintendo console in 2003, the highly touted lineup ultimately fell short of expectations. It all began, of course, with the heavily stylized but under-developed futuristic actioner Product Number 3; and was quickly followed by the sudden cancellation of the promising Kid Icarus wannabe, Dead Phoenix. The endless delay and lack of actual gameplay information regarding the bizarre but intriguing Killer 7 game didn't help much either, while the release of the amazing-looking Resident Evil 4 isn't going to happen until early 2005.

Giocateci e poi anche voi potrete urlare: "Henshin a Go Go, Baby!"

VJ is something that I have been waiting a long time for and now that it has finally happened, I can only hope that people with support it so that we can get more of them! In fact, the second I saw the first screenshot of VJ the hype meter in my brain hit full and I have never stopped thinking about it ever since. Some say 2D is dying, but when you play something like this, it makes you wonder what the hell those people are smoking. 2D is not only alive and well, but rightfully beating the shit out of you as we speak—IN SLOW MOTION!!! Viewtiful Joe is an almost flawless package - a combination of a great visual style, impressive action and enjoyable gameplay. It's the sort of game that reminds us what we like about videogames. The overall difficulty and the lack of save points are more likely to be seen as paying homage to the games of yesteryear, rather than being something that was overlooked. It's undoubtedly one of the best action games this year, if not this generation - buy it today.

Ten years from now when people think of classic retro games of the past chances are Viewtiful Joe will come up. In an age where many companies seem afraid to stray from the “mainstream” and take a risk on something new, original and different to breath some life into the industry Capcom stood up and delivered all that with a hell of a lot of fun and enjoyable gameplay thrown in. Unfortunately because it is different it might not sell as well as some (awful) movie licensed game but I believe if you are a bit apprehensive about how it looks once you play it and to grips with it you will enjoy it. Everyone should play this game!

All in all, Viewtiful Joe is beautifully put together, well constructed, innovative, and extremely fun to play. The two-dimensional levels have no lack of depth and three-dimensional appearance and do not disappoint the eyes. It can be ridiculously difficult, but it's better that way. Even so, it may be too much for some gamers on any difficulty setting. However, I think that the fresh gameplay elements, stylistic design, and wonderful characters will make it one game almost everyone will love.

Of course this should in all honesty be a masterpiece, but the problem is as always with expansion of ideas it doesn't fall into the categories recognised by the masses. Many will pick it up for the sheer nostalgia, many for the amazing looks, and the rest because they have heard such great things. But 'Joe Public' in stupidity and amusing coincidence of name will cast it aside not noticing what it has to offer.

In fact, Viewtiful Joe's sheer inventiveness and originality is its greatest pull - I've never played a game like it! I've never heard anything like it, never seen anything like it and certainly not gotten involved in gameplay like it before. The whole title just drips with bizarre style and flair and should give other developers the impetus to experiment outside of the usual shooter/sports sim/strategy titles dominating the market at the moment. Capcom have done us proud, injecting fun and sparky humour into gaming again. There is only one word that can adequately describe this game - Viewtiful!

GameCubeGame Critics
Viewtiful Joe is a wonderful action game lovingly crafted with the weathered but timeless elements of rusty genres along with the new, postmodern concepts of parody and time manipulation. The new concepts were in danger of being trite and meaningless, but Capcom's latest breaths new life into them. The appeal of Viewtiful Joe relies solely on its gameplay, and not from its genre-bending, medium-hopping aesthetics, self-awareness and loopy sense of humor. The game is far from a one-trick pony. Rather, it's an amalgamation of one-trick ponies (cel-shading, time bending, old school nostalgia tickling) to make a fulfilling, satisfying and jaw-dropping experience. Meet the new action game, better than the old action game. Or more appropriately, something old becomes new again.

If you already own Viewtiful Joe for the GameCube, you probably shouldn't let the inclusion of Dante lure you into buying the game again for the PS2. It's the same game, just one year later. But, if you don't own a GameCube, or you didn't grab this game the first time around, you have no good excuse not to get it now.

GameCubeEurogamer.net (UK)
Although it won't be to everybody's tastes, Viewtiful Joe is imaginative, beautiful, engaging and above all else entertaining. It's a timeless piece of quality gaming that, with the exception of its visual element, would probably work on any format, past or present. We could level a couple of criticisms at it, maybe arguing that it's overcompensating for its relative brevity with a rock hard difficulty level, or that the camera doesn't always capture enough of the action, but those are points we've had to sit here and dream up, because unless you really try not to like it, very little is likely to dent your appreciation of Viewtiful Joe.

Forget the digital antics of Spider-Man, Batman, or even the Hulk. Viewtiful Joe is, in fact, PS2's best superhero game. If one were to insert Ultraman into the basic plot of Last Action Hero, Viewtiful would be the result. The "story," as it were, revolves around Joe, a big fan of old Captain Blue movies, actually being sucked into a Captain Blue movie. And while he can throw a decent punch or two, he does a much better job of defeating various robots and beasties by becoming Viewtiful Joe.

Joe?s first appearance on the GameCube last fall wowed critics and fans alike, and heralded a new age in the action-game genre with an unparalleled visual presentation, outstanding level design, and old-school fast-twitch gameplay. However, this last feature had many gamers boo-hooing about ?unfair deaths? and ?cheap bosses,? which painfully revealed their feeble gaming skills. Luckily, novice joystick jockeys can rest easy knowing that Capcom has graciously inserted a new ?Easy? difficulty setting while also adding Devil May Cry?s Dante as a selectable character in this PlayStation 2 version.

Viewtiful Joe deftly delivers a fantastic cel-shaded look while also adding a really great series of unique gameplay twists that make it much, much better than the average side-scrolling action game. Originally released on the GameCube last October, Viewtiful Joe is now making its way to the PlayStation 2. It may not seem immediately obvious, but the action genre has been getting a slow makeover for the past few years. Prior to Viewtiful Joe, the evidence was Capcom's own Devil May Cry, which really demonstrated how to put together an action game with a sense of flair that moves beyond simple visual and character design and also makes an impact on how you play the game.

Now it’s not that we don’t like a fair challenge, but by level six - a repeat of previous boss encounters followed by an irritatingly long and laboured extra encounter with a flaming lion - it simply stops being fun and becomes more like a chore. Unless you’re prepared to spend literally hours playing the same boss encounters again and again to get to the final level, Viewtiful Joe’s replayability is considerably damaged. Because of this you’re likely to miss out on the unlockable extras of two extra difficulty levels and two extra characters. It’s a shame that such a brilliantly unreal, playable and fantastically well crafted game has been sullied by something as easily fixable as an irritatingly difficult level, but all the same, while it lasts, and if you’ve got the patience, playing Viewtiful Joe more than exceeds the visual pun of its title. In fact, it’s stunning.

On the surface, Viewtiful Joe has a lot in common with Sega's critically lauded Saturn game Nights. Both have levels that give you grades you as you play, both have main characters that transform into superheroes, and both have 2D gameplay within 3D worlds.`

In a market dominated with dark and gritty World War 2 shooters, Viewtiful Joe is more than just a breath of fresh air. He's a successful return to old school sensibilities, with a ton of new technological tricks up his sleeve. While the difficulty of some battles may have you ready to smash your controller at times, the rewards for getting past the hard battles are more than worth the frustration. Viewtiful Joe is one of those rare must-play games that people will still be talking about 10 years down the road.

Bursting with vibrancy and ham-fisted movie gags, Viewtiful Joe can’t be mistaken for any other game. For those willing to learn, it serves up a complex system of intricate combat mechanics that constantly dance between risk and reward; those short on time or patience might be left in the dust. Somewhere between a fighting game and a fever dream, this brawler will engage and enrage in equal parts with a fiery vigor, and the effect is Viewtiful.

Sure, Viewtiful Joe will undoubtedly test your patience, and not always in a good way. But the moments that stay with you after you switch off the GameCube are characterised by inventiveness, wit, verve, charm, style, vigour and, above all, fun. And that’s not something that can be said of that many other games these days.

In the end there is no counter to the argument that Viewtiful Joe is simply a very difficult scrolling fighting game. But if that concept at all intrigues you, you will find it executed in some of the most rewarding and entertaining ways possible. It made me smile within minutes of playing it. If that isn’t a happy ending, I don’t know what is…

Viewtiful Joe is as original as any title that we have seen for some time now. Even though it's a beat 'em up it has the charm to attract gamers who don't really appreciate the genre. The gameplay, like the graphics, is bold and exciting. It's definitely a title that most GameCube owners would want in their collection. However it's not's very deaf gamer friendly and our rating has to reflect this. If you are a hearing gamer reading this review then I would definitely recommend the game and class this as definite 9/10 material. However for deaf gamers it's a different story. Having said that though, it's still well worth it if you're a fan of the 2D beat 'em up genre.

Viewtiful Joe is a refreshing change from all the cookie-cutter 3D platform games out there, but I didn't find it especially addictive once the novelty wore off. Also, the name "Viewtiful Joe" really sucks in my opinion. Still, I'll give Joe credit for its good looks and innovation.

The enemies in Viewtiful Joe are distinctly not human, and blood is not a factor. Most enemies appear as half-built robotic creatures; as they are attacked they begin to disintegrate. Parents may want to watch out for the almost subconscious suggestive themes: In the background of the second level are advertisements for strippers and XXX clubs with nearly topless women on billboards. On a technical level Viewtiful Joe is inventive and classy -- with a unique style of animation and a great soundtrack, Joe looks good and plays well. However, at times the strobe-like flashing effects and the style of the animation may be difficult to watch. The game controls are well thought out and easy to learn, and in-game tutorials help players learn the controls as they play.

If you ignore the gradings and play through the game from beginning to end, Viewtiful Joe is a short, fast paced, no brain summer blockbuster type of game. Maybe that’s all Atsushi Inaba wanted to create. I, sadly, wanted more.

The concept of Viewtiful Joe is excellent, and the graphics do their best to pull you in. But the weak control scheme, combined with parts of the game that are completely counter-intuitive, hamper the game tremendously to the point where a serious gamer will, at best, pick this up for a rental. I think Capcom became so blinded by the concept that they forgot that the execution is just as important, if not moreso, than the design. While I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel, let's hope that production is sharply improved, lest Joe age worse than all the old movies he loves.
