In the beginning there was Twisted Metal - a graphical mess that lacked any feasible ideas. Soon to be followed by the unexpected hit title of 1997, Twisted Metal World Tour - an altogether smoother journey that simply oozed in fun gameplay. The basic concept being to combine those age old playground games - hide & seek and chasey - only this time instead of being tagged you were subjected to a rather nasty rocket thrust up your backside. Such was the success of TM2 that over the last 12 months the API post-bag has been swamped with requests for any morsels of info on the third in the series. Well wait no longer because Vigilante 8 will do very nicely in it's place. Next generation graphics, jaw dropping light sourcing and masses of gameplay for one or two players. It's everything that TM3 should be, and if it's not then roll on Vigilante 9.

Overall, this game is not leaps and bounds above the PSX version, but if you do not own a PSX this game is worth picking up. As of this writing, you will not find anything else like it on the N64. If you enjoy blowing stuff up, you should be good and satisfied after a few rounds. Also, if multiplayer is your thing, car combat games really cater to multiplayer action so you should be blowing up your buddies for hours on end. The single player is a bit short and anticlimactic, but still worth playing for a while.

This game will definitely appeal to fans of Twisted Metal. If you did not like those games, I would still recommend giving this one a look because it does have a little bit of a different feel to it. Overall, I think we may be seeing some revolutionary new features but the gameplay itself is not revolutionary. I will never get tired of blowing things up in this game just for the hell of it. I don't think you will either.

Vigilante 8 follows directly in the skid marks of the first two Twisted Metals and Interstate '76 for the PC. It may be tons of fun, but is suffers the same problems as the PlayStation version, lousier music, and nothing new has been added to the genre. However, for those of you waiting for car combat on the N64, Vigilante 8 is the best way to get there... actually, it's the only way considering the shortage of games.

PlayStationAll Game Guide
Vigilante 8 more than makes up for the shortcomings with the fantastic shooting action and nicely designed arenas. Whether or not it's a better game than Twisted Metal 2 is up to the player; if you value shooting over everything else, it is. If you value style as the most important thing, it isn't. Nonetheless, Vigilante 8 is darn good.

Overall Vigilante 8 is a good game. It is like a lot of other destruction games where you go out and your soul purpose is demolishing anything that gets in your way. If you like these type of games you will really like Vigilante 8. If you have had enough of these games you may want to pass on this one. I liked the game and the multiplayer was fun. Overall, I enjoyed the game.

Overall, Vigilante 8 is worth a test-drive rental for fans of the genre. If the controls had spent more time in the shop, V8 could have been one topnotch lean, mean driving machine.

A band of six desperadoes, known as the Coyotes, is wreaking havoc across the Southwest. A band of vigilantes, called, strangely enough, the Vigilantes, is bent on stopping the Coyotes by any means necessary. So all the players involved have mounted crazy government weaponry on their cars and gone into battle.

Vigilante 8 was one of the most celebrated car combat games on the PlayStation, and I'm pleased to say that with new multiplayer options and improved graphics the N64 version is even better.

PlayStationPSX Extreme
Well once everything is unlocked, the game is just no more fun. The only thing that can keep the game going is it's two player head to head mode. So for all those people who think that Vigilante 8 is a fast paced car combat game, think again. I suggest picking up Rouge Trip instead. Trust me!

Nintendo 64Gaming Age
You know, all of this is sort of moot considering that you will not find another arena-based car combat game on the N64 anyhow. But what I can say is this: Vigilante 8 is a quality product that offers a satisfying multiplayer aspect and an above average single player game. If you're looking for this type of fix, you can't go wrong. It's about time this genre was covered on Nintendo's system anyway.

Well, most of the weapons are very cheap. The guided weapons require no aiming at all, and since you get about 20 at a time, you can rain down heavy damage on other cars with little effort. Yes, I had the same beef with the lightning attack in Twisted Metal 2, but the problem here is more rampant. V8 was never mounted a serious threat to Twisted Metal, but it does provide a nice change of pace for car combat fans.

A great way to work off some road rage...and better than Twisted Metal! PlayStation Dr.Bedlam (53)
