What Kind Of Game Is This?! Genesis David Largo (2)
If Virtua Racing made use of the SVP, why can't Virtua Fighter 2? Now, we get a mediocre game that tries to make it 2D. Genesis Mavi Bacon (15)

Casual Virtua Fighter fans will find themselves playing an enjoyable fighter that at the very least is an odd little piece of history. Die-hards should stay away, even though they should hardly expect an accurate translation. If you can look passed some of the missing pieces, this is a surprising title that ranks up there with the best fighters the Genesis has to offer.

I don’t feel that Virtua Fighter 2 offers enough fighting innovation to make this cartridge stand above the other great fighting games that are currently available for the Genesis. I do think that VF2 represents a good job on the part of the conversion team and the artists that were called in to recreate the mood of this game’s more advanced roots. It is impossible to ignore this title’s major shortcoming, though - it is not nearly as smooth as its predecessors. Because of this, I can’t recommend Virtua Fighter 2 for the Genesis as anything other than a catch up cart for collectors and fans, or for those patient enough to wait for this title to hit the discount bins. The rest of you; keep it in your wallet.

What we're looking at here is a game that essentially did everything right for a 16-bit fighter of the time, only the accomplishment came about two years too late. No one was really interested in an eye candy port of one of the most popular next generation fighters, and the Genesis rendition of Virtua Fighter 2 was quickly gobbled up by its 32-bit sibling's hype. Though an interesting footnote in Genesis history and a prime example of the console's capabilities, it will forever be remembered as the "other" version. At least it's a good one.

The problem is that it never belonged in that age, and it's just too difficult to have any real fun with this version knowing how inferior it is to the real Virtua Fighter 2. So don't be fooled into downloading this one for any reason – it's not worth its 800 Point asking price, and there are far better options in the fighting genre available now, and scheduled to come in the future for the Virtual Console.

Games like this sadly shine an unforgiving spotlight on the flaws in the Virtual Console set-up, with the lack of a demo function leading to disappointment, but most notably the insistence on pricing them according to platform. There's simply no way this warrants 800 points simply because it appeared on the Megadrive rather than, say, the PC Engine. You may squeeze a few minutes of amusement from the reasonably flexible options - such as the ability to give fighters infinite health - but when Street Fighter II is already available for download, and infinitely superior even in its earliest console incarnation, why would you bother?

VF2 on the Genesis is something of a mistake. Some might even call it a cash-in. However you want to view it, there's no denying that it's a game you should avoid.

This is Virtua Fighter? Virtua Fighter is supposed to be a 3D game, but this version is just a second-rate 2D fighter. There's nothing "Virtual" about this game at all. Sega just used the name, and in my opinion, it's misleading. Anyway, this mediocre fighting game has decent graphics but nothing in the way of innovation. The whole gimmick to Virtua Fighter was the 3D angles, and without that the game seems pointless. Eight characters from the series are included, and I have to admit that they are colorful and well detailed. There are plenty of moves for each fighter, but the moves don't look very spectacular, and most are punch/kick variations. This game is a button-masher. It lacks the personality and playability of other fighting games like Street Fighter or Eternal Champions, and the voice samples are awful. Just to illustrate how lame this game is, one of the three bullet items on the box reads "Choose between 6 different fighting uniforms per character!" Big frickin' deal.
