This game boasts visuals and gameplay unmatched for the system, and is very similar version to the 32X version. Although the polygon count and number of colors are slightly lower in this version, the gameplay is just as good. Granted, there are only three tracks (compared to five on the 32X), but these are the three better tracks, complete with bridges, tunnels, and overpasses. Other minor differences include only one type of car (formula) and audio effects that sound muffled. Since the Genesis only supports a modest number of colors, the road tends to look like a patchwork of blue and gray squares. But in terms of fun, Virtua Racing has withstood the test of time very well. Even the split-screen mode is a pleasure to play. Incredibly, this game originally sold for an astronomical $100. NOTE: This cartridge will NOT work in a Sega 32X-equipped console.

Virtua Racing is a supremely thrilling experience, but a transient one, especially since there's no way to save your best times. You'll find yourself hunting for new friends to beat in two-player mode. Still, it's the best excuse you'll have this summer to break every piggy bank you have. VR is a must have game.

Mooie crashes, lastige besturing. Kostte destijds meer dan 200 piek.

Graphically, Virtua Racing has some polygon reduction here and there, and the tracks aren't quite as detailed as the arcade (or 32X version). However, the game moves at a solid 25fps, and the gameplay is challenging.

Holy polygons! This game does a great job of capturing the look and feel of the arcade game. Racing fans will love the multi-view option as well as the control and great graphics.

The first Genesis cart to feature Sega's new DSP chip, this is a helluva racing sim. On the downside, it's short-lived with just three tracks - and it costs a staggering $100.

Be that as it may, Virtua Racing is a show-stopper for the Genesis and demonstrates what the new SVP chip is capable of. Hopefully Sega will put this processor to good use and not let it languish around like Nintendo's much-hyped but hardly used Super F/X chip.

This 16-megger (which features Sega's highly-touted super-duper SVP chip, whatever that is) is a pretty faithful translation of the coin-op, but something unfortunate happens when you play Virtua Racing from your living-room couch, holding a joystick and watching the action of a standard television. Unfortunately, the racing effect that made the arcade game such a powerful experience is lost. The choice is yours: you can buy Virtua Racing for the insane price of $100 and be able to play whenever you want, or you can cruise the coin-ip about 133 times. Hmmmm...what time does the arcade close?

Technically speaking, this game's a masterpiece. It looks and plays great. My only problem is that it's just not as exciting to play as the arcade. I don't know, maybe the novelty just wore off. On certain tracks, it's hard to tell where you're going. Still, it's the best racing game around, with it's smooth scaling polygons. Sega did a nice job on this one, but I wish their new chip did something with sound. Still a cool cart.

Having said that, however, it is fair to say that this did look fairly good for its time and it's clear that Starfox for SNES was what Virtua Racing was trying to counter. The Genesis certainly didn't have a plethora of great racing games before this, and it does blow away most of the clunkers of the system's past. Seeing as how it is playable and considered a piece of Genesis history, I wouldn't advise against buying it, since it's also quite cheap out there on eBay. Nonetheless, I do stress the irrefutable fact that the 32X version is far superior.
