VVVVVV is a tour de force of innovative platforming, with a cool look and great soundtrack. An early contender for game of 2010!

I spent a good half hour trying to think of a witty way to sum up my review in a six word sentence, only using words that started with V; if you couldn’t tell, that didn’t quite work out. All in all, VVVVVV is a fantastic platformer, with enough charm and challenge to hold your attention for quite some time. The level design is impressive, as is the soundtrack (which is also available for purchase, under the title PPPPPP), which combine to create a great experience. With twenty hidden trinkets to collect, a fairly large map to explore, time trials, and other alternate play modes, there’s plenty to do. At the modest asking price of $6.99 (USD), it’s hard to go wrong regardless, but trust me when I say that if you like chiptunes, indie games, and platformers, this is definitely a must buy.

VVVVVV is like a fine pizza Margherita or some delicious vanilla ice cream: it’s pure and simple, but not going to be to everybody’s tastes. Some will want more from their platforming; more play mechanics, more pick-ups, a more fleshed out story, possibly with flashier graphics while others, myself included, will be won over by its charm and economy, that is, how it does so much with so little. Some will shirk from its many challenges while others will seek the thrill of overcoming them. The question is: how do you know if you’re one of these ‘others’?

Though it might take roughly two hours and some thousand deaths to finish, the additional unlockable modes and optional 20 shiny trinkets to collect (in lieu of the Banjo-Kazooie school of countless collectibles) are well worth the extra time. It’s just too bad VVVVVV didn’t come out 25 years ago.

Cosmetically: the graphics are charming if not gorgeous, the room names are funny, and the music is fucking spectacular, especially if you're into chiptunes. In the end, I can't say enough good things about VVVVVV. It's Terry Cavanagh's best game to date, and one of the best platformers I've ever played. If you have any interest in challenging platformers whatsoever, you'd be doing yourself a disservice not to pick up VVVVVV.

Before I start sounding too negative, it's worth pointing out that when VVVVVV was first released on PC, it cost $15, and was missing the level editor, player created levels, and many other features. Who knows what kind of new features VVVVVV will get on the 3DS down the line? For now, I can say that this is the best looking, most portable, content-packed initial download of VVVVVV available today. Both fans of the original game, and those new to the world of this frown flipping, gravity ripping space explorer would do well to check it out.

If you haven't played VVVVVV before, this is absolutely an essential purchase. If you have already played it, you'll no doubt want to grab it again. If Nintendo continues to allow such wonderful indie releases into the eShop, the future looks very bright indeed for the digital store.

VVVVVV is a spectacular game, and while the 3DS version is a little pricier compared to other available options, it’s well worth it if you’ve never played the game before or want it on the go. This isn’t quite the definitive version (it would be closer to that if they add in the online leaderboards and level editor later), but if you’re into brilliant retro challenges, this is more than worth checking out.

VVVVVV is essential indie gaming that will have you both cursing and smiling simultaneously. It's the perfect way to spend an evening, and the type of game that you'll be recommending to all your friends. Make sure to try out the online demo.

Indeed, love is the feeling one receives from VVVVVV. The love that is in the details, the soundtrack, the intricate design. It is a testament to the obviously intensive playtesting that the love you will feel towards the game will never become hate, even as you lose your six-hundredth life to the cruel trio of screens that is Veni, Vidi and Vici. The best games are challenging without being overwhelming, punishing without being cruel, and rewarding without being spoiling. And, of course, VVVVVV is among them.

VVVVVV is a true gem of a game that older gamers with memories of the 8-bit era will particularly adore. It is a little brief at only around 3 hours but it never feels short. Instead it feels like the perfect length for such a game ensuring that you will continuously smiling throughout, even though there might be the odd urge to punch a wall when you die for the 50th time in the same section. The little nuances are wonderful and I found myself regularly impressed when I realised the solution to a puzzle which previously had stumped me. The various names given to each section are a great touch, and something that really resided with me for a while after completing VVVVVV. It might not be the cheapest of indie games on offer nor the longest but VVVVVV oozes class and shouldn’t be missed by any self respecting puzzle platformer fan.

Thankfully, the game includes a plethora of checkpoints that help make dying a bit less painful. It also helps that the game has a well-written story, as Viridian interacts with his crew and various objects within the world. If anything, the desire to find out what happened next kept us playing through adversity. On the downside, VVVVVV costs $7.99, putting it on the high end of eShop games. We also have nothing but bad things to say about the 3D effect, which does little to enhance the old school graphics while leaving ghost images of various objects cluttering the screen. Other than that, it's one of the more unique games we've seen for 3DS and another fine addition to the handheld's downloadable library. VVVVVV lacks some flash, but more than makes up for this with hardcore play.

Nintendo 3DSEurogamer.net (UK)
Despite these niggles, this is a fine port of a splendid platformer. Switching effortlessly between sadistic punishment and boundless freedom, VVVVVV provides more moment to moment pleasure in its scant two or three hour campaign than most games do at four times the length. While not flashy, long, or for the faint of heart, those with an affinity for old-school difficulty and newfangled mollycoddling checkpoints will find Cavanagh's tribute to the past could teach its high-definition contemporaries a thing or two.

VVVVVV might not have the usual visual flash we've come to expect from games in recent years, but that doesn't mean it's not every bit as much fun to play. It's hard to believe that such a simple concept as flipping gravity can prove to be so enthralling, but given the game's incredibly diverse level designs, it's no wonder it's so difficult to put down. Whether you've played the game before or not, you owe it to yourself to experience another great addition to the 3DS eShop library.

WindowsEurogamer.net (UK)
As I've mentioned, VVVVVV is fairly short, taking around three hours to complete, and another couple - plus a great deal of skill and patience - to retrieve all of its collectable trinkets. Bearing that in mind, the asking price of £9 ($15, €10) might seem pretty steep. Then again, look past its lo-fi style and you'll realise its production values are hardly stingy, with unlockable time trials and other Easter-egg modes, and generally slick presentation. More to the point, it's excellent for its entire length. How many big-budget developments can say that?

If you are anything like me, then you will know the instant you lay your eyes on this game that you are going to love it. I went with my instincts (and trust in the retro platformer) and was so glad that I did. VVVVVV has become one of those games that I love to play over and over again, mainly down to how casual and addictive it is whilst at the same time still offering a challenge. Overall it is a perfectly made game as you would expect due to its simplicity. Perhaps its biggest achievement is to keep the game varied despite never changing its style, format or core gameplay. If you are looking for something to keep you occupied in your spare time, I would advise giving VVVVVV a go, but only if it appeals to your taste in games.

WindowsA Hardy Developer's Journal
Let’s break for a moment from the usual indie adventure games’ reviews for a different kind of indie. The thing is VVVVVV is such a perfect game to write a concise opinion piece about – the powerful main concept defining its gameplay is as simple and sharp as its title. Basically, VVVVVV is a platformer in which you can’t jump, you can’t shoot, you don’t use any power-ups, but instead, regardless of where you are, you can always switch the source of gravity from what’s beneath you to what’s above you et cetera and vice versa!

WindowsThunderbolt Games
What results is a game with bygone days in its heart but its head firmly focussed on the here and now. As with Braid, Bionic Commando Rearmed and Trine before it, it’s helping usher in the next generation of two dimensional platforming, paying its due to the eighties before speeding past them in a blur of polished originality. VVVVVV’s fusion of styles is exactly what lends it its endless playability; there’s not a dull moment to be had in this tight, rewarding and above all blisteringly fun package.
80
WindowsGamer Limit
It’s hard to enjoy a game that kills you 1056 times, yet VVVVVV rejects that idea with it’s simple gameplay, plentiful checkpoints, and fantastic music. It punishes and tricks you, but the entire time, like the perpetually optimistic hero, you will be grinning – even if your wallet isn’t.

WindowsEdge
Speed runs and single-life modes are there for those who can face them, but for most people, VVVVVV will be a game to be tentatively prodded through with all the help available. Even so, it would be wrong to let the sheer fiendishness of Cavanagh’s offering overwhelm any appreciation of the ceaseless elegance of the design. In fact, the difficulty and the creative ingenuity work in tandem: the promise of the next piece of cleverness driving you past some of the less lovable challenges, while that challenge itself makes you appreciate the precision and quiet brilliance with which the whole thing has been pieced together. Brutal and rather short, VVVVVV’s also devious and darkly funny. It’s a pedantic classic, and a game for watch-makers as much as speed-runners.

WindowsBit-Tech
VVVVVV’s speed though creates one rather larger problem though; brevity. It’s the type of game you can easily breeze through in a few hours. Worse, the simplicity of the graphics and experience makes that time fly by and means you don’t really recognise the overall quality of the game. Yes, VVVVVV is very simple, but it’s also very good.. All of this combines in the end to make VVVVVV’s price tag a bit of a thorny issue as, at £9 GBP ($14 USD), there’s going to be an awful lot of people who um and err and eventually decide to save the money up for Mass Effect 2 instead. We can’t really blame those people, but we do think they’re missing out on what could quietly be one of the best indie games we’ve seen in a long while and we’d invite them to try the Flash-based demo before they really make their minds up.

While I wouldn't refer to VVVVVV as an example of indie gaming at its finest, it's still a pretty good experience. The game rarely ever lets up on the difficulty, but despite the fluctuating balance, the overall charm and simplicity both work well in the game's favor. Not an amazing game, but still worth playing nevertheless.

Nintendo 3DSGamer Limit
After all is said in done with the main game (which could take you anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours), there are eighteen extra levels designed specifically for the 3DS version, including one by Minecraft overlord Notch. Most of these levels are extremely well done, and some are so long that they rival the main game’s length – a few even have their own little story to them. Additionally, there’s a “No Death” Mode, a “Time Trial” mode, and a “Flip Mode” (that seems to be pretty buggy at the moment). Note that there’s no level editor, so it’s not the definitive version of the game, but the 3D version of V has enough content to justify double dipping for some people – for others, stick with the $5 (or less) PC version.
75
Nintendo 3DSIGN
As it is, VVVVVV is still a spike-lined, death-packed good time. Its steeper price and wimpy 3D just make it feel like more of a straightforward PC port and less like something truly special for the eShop.

WindowsIGN UK
It's easy to recommend VVVVVV to fans of the "retro revival" games that seem to be gaining in popularity; but it has more in common with artsy, competent and contemporary titles like N+ and Braid than it does with, say, Konami's Rebirth series on WiiWare, Mega Man 9 or Retro Game Challenge. Here's to hoping that VVVVVV, or Distractionware's next project, finds its way to a more mainstream channels, like Xbox LIVE Arcade or WiiWare, since it certainly deserves the exposure.

Nintendo 3DSRetroage
Podsumowując, VVVVVV to całkiem niezła gra.

In the end, VVVVVV was a stress inducing and frustrating experience. While the game has an old school feel, the reality is VVVVVV does not deliver the same experience I had with similar challenging games back in the day. Not to mention the visuals disappoint and much more could have been done to make the game a little more forgiving yet enjoyably challenging at the same time. If you are interested in playing a very challenging retro game that is stripped bare of filler and really tests your skills and patience, then I would recommend VVVVVV for you.
