After a lengthy study of this title, I must admit that it grew on me as I continued to play it. If you are a fan of Mortal Kombat, you will be pleased with this title, and it is definitely the fastest fighting game I have played on a PC. Not having multiplayer support or modem play is a big drawback, though. Overall, War Gods is a good title worth buying if you are a die-hard fight fan, and rates a 76 out of 100 overall.

Now, although WAR GODS isn't the greatest fighting game around, it does have some redeeming features. The basic gameplay in WAR GODS is similar enough to MORTAL KOMBAT that fans of that series can just jump in and have fun with the game. One of the (few) things I enjoy about MORTAL KOMBAT is how the game doesn't seem to take itself seriously. The way MORTAL KOMBAT presents even the most basic move with an over-the-top outrageousness has a certain entertainment value in itself, and WAR GODS is stamped from the same humorous mold. And while WAR GODS lacks the tactical precision of STREET FIGHTER (my favorite fighting game series) or the graphic flair of VIRTUA FIGHTER, it is easy to enjoy for casual fun. Just be sure to bring a friend along or you're toast.

Was bekommt Ihr also beim ersten 3D-Beat-'em-Up für Euer Nintendo64 geboten?

The characters are as absurd as ever, but include the obligatory 'sexy bird' - in this case, one who wears a G-string made of dental floss and leans back and shakes her tits when she wins. You can imagine the designers thinking this will really get us going... but they probably only had one hand free when they worked on it. So no plus-points there either. And that's it, really. Crap animation, ludicrous 'special moves' and tedious characters. Who could ask for more?
There isn't much of a selection when it comes to fighting games on the PC. The fact that WarGods is one of the strongest titles of its kind to emerge on the PC is a testament to just how under-represented the genre has been thus far. But by this same token, WarGods is worth a look if only because it doesn't have a lot of competition.

War Gods 64 does not seem to support Nintendo's ideology of quality over quantity. Hardcore Mortal Kombat fans may enjoy War Gods 64, but it looks like Nintendo 64 owners are still left without a quality fighting game.

War Gods was a good idea that went sour with flawed character design and choppy animation derivitive of its core. That said, it should be noted that developer Eurocom managed an excellent port of the game to Nintendo 64. It's just too bad that there wasn't much there to begin with. Unless you loved Mortal Kombat and don't mind a few uninspired characters to play around with, we recommend waiting.
Nintendo 64Gaming Target
The replay of War Gods is probably the worst feature. The game isn't difficult on the highest setting, and once you beat the game you don't want to play anymore. Perhaps even you won't want to play it again after you played one match. That is how boring this game is.

Play control is responsive with a pad, and those familiar with Mortal Kombat will be right at home here (with the exception of the game's addition of a -3D- button for both lateral evasion and special moves). The fatalities are more over the top than ever, but as in Midway's earlier fighters, still end up being a boring gimmick. To put it mildly, War Gods is shallow entertainment at best, but for those who liked the coin-op, previous Mortal Kombat games, or just like games with cheesy entertainment value, it might prove alluring. On the other hand, Virtua Fighter 2, a truly great fighting game, is coming soon and fighting game fans will likely rather wait for that.

War Gods (and games like it) angers me because it blatantly goes against the very promise that many N64 owners counted on when they bought the system. This game was a poor effort in the arcades and any conversion to the home isn't about to improve it. From start to finish there are so few redeeming qualities in this game that they are hardly worth mentioning. To be fair, though, I'm going to point them out at the outset.

All in all, War Gods lends further support to the theory that the N64 is a great machine with some not-so great games. In a gaming world capable of producing a beauty like Soul Blade (for the PSX, which has exactly half the firepower), it's a shame that the same care isn't put into games for the N64. Considering the inflated price of the titles, I'd advise waiting for some of the upcoming biggies (Starfox 64, Zelda 64) and saving those pennies. This one is for the bargain bin at the rental store.

Nintendo 64Digital Press - Classic Video Games
It's bad enough that every single character design is questionable. It's even worse to think they're trapped in something like this. You can almost imagine this game being some sort of sick April Fools joke or a hoax on the gaming community, but it was widely released. We should all take a moment of silence to remember those who have suffered either in the arcade or actually paid money to play this one at home. They're brave souls.
Nintendo 64The Video Game Critic
The idea of mythical gods battling to the death sounds exciting, but in fact it's really, really boring. War Gods tries to bring the brutality and mystique of Mortal Kombat to the realm of 3D, but fails miserably.
