In the end, though, all of the problems, even the most serious one of lag in heavy player combat, are ultimately fixable. Warhammer Online has had the smoothest, most complete MMO launch we've ever seen. Game balance and other elements of the game need tweaking but they're all there, they all work and most importantly, they're all fun. This is a game that has 20 separate classes and while some may be overpowered or underpowered, none of them are boring to play. The game comes loaded with PvP and PvE content that -- balance issues notwithstanding -- is as good as or much better than that of any other MMO on the market. Warhammer Online is the next great game of Player vs. Player and Realm vs. Realm content and we have the feeling that somewhere on the other side of reality, the Chaos god Tzeentch is smiling.

If you're looking for a new MMOG, or simply want to try an online role-playing game for the first time, you won't be disappointed in joining the defenders of Order or the marauders of Destruction. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a keep to capture. If I don't see you on the castle walls, I'm sure we'll meet in the breach.

Its similarities to and improvements on WoW – most especially in PvP – make it the natural next home for anyone either dispossessed by Blizzard’s effort or who has held out from all MMOs in the hope of something a bit meatier. Playing Warhammer Online, it’s easy to forget that this game stems from a hobby so often accused of nerdiness. It shares design values, fiction and certain concepts with the Warhammer tabletop game, but really it’s only the name that binds them. Conan was supposed to be the so-macho MMO, but against this it seems a bit Sealed Knot. WAR is war. The associated intensity of this means it probably won’t pick up anything like the audience WoW has, but it will get a large one. And a very, very satisfied one at that.

The true test of an MMO is the one of time. There?s simply so much to see and do that it would take months to experience the entire game. You can explore different factions and character classes, explore different parts of the world, and play as both Order and Destruction. However, we?re definitely having a lot of fun playing the game, and there?s little doubt that Warhammer Online is off to a model and admirable start.

Despite all of this, it's perhaps telling that most of the negative points have been shunted into the last few paragraphs. As major as some sound, the superb RvR makes up for it. It's difficult to recommend Warhammer Online to anyone who isn't into player vs. player, as that's the real focus of the game, but for those who do, it's definitely an interesting take. The PvP is more accomplished than in any other standard MMO I've seen and keeps pulling me back into the game again and again. WAR is a genuine triumph and one of the best MMOs on the market at the moment, and although it's limited by the RvR focus, small world scale, and a little emptiness brought about by the weak crafting, it regularly brings about tight and thrilling engagements and reminds you, with its streamlining and different focus, of the improvements that can still be made to MMOs and the niches still available.

WAR is a very good game. Sure, there are elements that EA/Mythic borrowed from its own Dark Age of Camelot, but even those elements have been tweaked and improved. It would be easy to point at the graphics as being last generation, but that’s only not fair, but not accurate. The dev team didn’t invest its main effort in making a game that was drop-dead gorgeous but lacking in the elements that would retain players – like the gameplay itself. They made a game that looks good, but plays much better. It is the latter, the layers of gameplay, the challenges, and the community, that will keep this game moving forward.

At first glance, it has the interest, the substance, and the patch workflow to survive the rough first few months of an MMO lifecycle. But in that time, Mythic need to work to their strengths of endgame siege pvp, and that’s exactly what they’ll do. 8.5 Chaotic rubber chickens from me.

EA and Mythic have teamed up to produce quite a MMORPG with Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning This is a savagely competitive market and it's typically unlike many other genres where a gamer will buy a few competing titles - with subscription fees and the likes, many MMORPG gamers may be more inclined to stick with one title at a time. So, with this in mind, Age of Reckoning certainly has its work cut out for itself to compete with the big boys, but with the depth and quality on offer here, it shouldn't have any trouble shooting towards the top of the MMORPG world and becoming a favorite of many worldwide. Whilst it's true much of the game is fairly traditional and not overly new from that standpoint, when it's done as well as this, you don't need to reinvent the wheel. Provided the so far exceptional support in the form of servers and updates continues, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning should be a high priority for any MMORPG gamer that may be looking for a new game to try out.

Overall, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is a well balanced and fun MMO, that has had one of the smoothest launches to date. With only two months under its belt, Mythic has already announced plans to address most of the issues I’ve mentioned with their 1.1 patch that is slated to hit in December (which also includes the addition of two classes that had been cut previous to launch). If Mythic continues to be this responsive to the needs of their subscribers, this game has a lot of potential. The MMO market is not a friendly one, and whether a more casual friendly, RvR focused MMO will have the longevity of other successful MMOs is hard to judge.

This isn't the most well-rounded massively multiplayer online game, but Warhammer Online grabs the tuskgor by the horns, delivering the finest PVP content seen in a traditional persistent world RPG. Questers and explorers may not find what they're looking for, and certain gameplay systems don't mesh as well as they should. Nevertheless, there's more than enough exciting PVP content here to keep newcomers and veterans alike immersed in the perpetually violent tug of war between the forces of Order and Destruction. Or as the Orcs say: Waaagh!

Fairly conventional fantasy MMO with some interesting innovations and heavy bias towards large scale player vs. player combat. Polished and playable, but with many small reservations. Badly in need of more content and balance tweaks.

The 10-level trial is a free download, and the full game costs $19.95 to buy and then $15 a month to play, so it's an investment. Warhammer Online's gameplay is great enough to repay that expense, or at least a few months of it, whether you're a practiced MMO player or not. The impressive game world, graphics, and combat will keep you coming back for more.

If your favorite part of the fantasy genre involves gigantic battles against incredible odds, then WAR has been designed for you. The entire game is built around this concept—more Battle of Helm’s Deep than Riddles in the Dark as you fight and die to stop an enemy onslaught. But if soloing on quests to feel like you’re the Chosen One is your thing, you’re missing half the game.

So is Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning going to redefine the MMO genre? No, but it doesn’t have to. It’s a different, more frenetic and yet focused form of fantasy combat. There’s more of a focus on the epic conflict between the two sides and the mythology that surrounds that battle; from the start you’re part of this conflict and you really can’t journey anywhere in the world where it’s not omnipresent.

It’s good to have these extra cities and complex siege battles to look forward to, but it’s also a bit of a bummer we probably won’t be getting any new races for a long while. Definitely worth checking out if you’re into pvp. 8/10 chickens from me.

Once the initial awe has passed, though, the appeal of the game breaks down into two things. For one, how important is the presentation in an MMO to you? WAR features a very polished audiovisual component, but the gameplay isn't exactly genre-bending. For fans of Warhammer, the strong presentation could be enough to warrant a subscription. For hardcore MMO players, however, it boils down to this: what can I do that I can't do in all of the other MMOs out there? The answer is, not that much. Public quests are great fun when taken in a giant Warband, and the PvP system is definitely worth a look. Really, though, it's a matter of preference. There is nothing that weights Warhammer Online down, and nothing that propels it to heights unknown. It's a great online experience, but one that is probably best left to those who dust off their original rule set every now and then.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is a pretty young MMORPG that has only just been released and due to that you can hardly expect it to have as many features as some competitors. Still everything will depend on how well the support will be in the coming 6 to 12 months, but with developer Mythic Entertainment I've got high hopes that development will be positive!

Mythic has dutifully done everything it needs to to compete with Blizzard's jack of all trades and master of most. Crafting is weak, and dungeons - the small, instanced experiences that really cement the group dynamics in an MMO - are frustratingly rare, but aside from that WAR does it all, and does it well. That said, you can very easily tell which parts of this grand enterprise Mythic's heart was in, and those parts - RVR and Public Quests - are completely thrilling, and surprisingly accessible.

I really enjoy the time I spend in the Warhammer universe, but it's really only fun when you're in a big guild with people who do a lot of stuff together. I'm just biding my time until some of the problems have been fixed, and I can get a higher-end machine to play the game on. Until then, I've got Wrath of the Lich King to look forward to, and way too many top-notch titles coming out for the holiday season.

Oh with that being said one other thing I forgot to mention. Warhammers crafting system is very basic in comparison to WoW. Personally I like WoW's system because it makes getting that rare item and crafting it yourself fun and rewarding. Warhammer doesnt have anything like that really. Warhammer has basic stuff that just adds to your characters gear/stats. There are rare items for crafting. But your crafting something like a gem for a piece of gear. Not the gear itself ya know? I definately would give the nod to WoW here as well. That being said, I dunno that this is an area that Warhammer is going to change because they dont want a big system of things to deal with and make. They just want to have basic little easy to access and make stuff available to add onto the stuff you already got basically. Id like to see something added to this area at some point but I get the vibe that its something that will not be tweaked much.

Warhammer Online still has promise, but the licence is tragically underused. Mythic has tried to emulate World of Warcraft in so many ways they have lost their identity and reputation in the process. Despite innovation, Warhammer Online falls far short of what could have been something truly special.

All things considered, Warhammer Online is not a bad game. But it’s not a good one. It falls somewhere between becoming an angel and getting raped by many demons. It starts out strong but just leaves you confused and disappointed when it’s all over. Mythic still has my $15 a month, but so did Star Wars Galaxies for a year and a half. Save 500 hours of your life and avoid Warhammer Online. It’s too late for me, I’m afraid.
