The Escapist (Aug 02, 2012)
A well-crafted, easy-to-play game with an entertaining fantasy bent, Warlock will have you staying up nights taking one more turn to blast King Rrat to kingdom come.
Multiplayer.it (May 17, 2012)
GameStar (Germany) (May 28, 2012)
Warlock – Master of the Arcane is a pretty shameless Civilization 5, only with a different setting and unit types. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel by any means but it is fairly solid in its own execution. It has some problems around the edges, (again) no single player, weak tutorial, and a dodgy research mechanic.
4Players.de (May 18, 2012)
Warlock brings nice, fast-paced gameplay to a traditionally 'slow' genre. While this simplicity comes at a price, Warlock still manages to deliver enjoyable matches. You can finish a game (or several) in the span of one evening, something that cannot be said for most other strategy games. Despite the flaws and lack of polish in a few areas (manual, in game tech tree, etc.), the game is just plain fun. You dive immediately into combat, which is Warlock's best feature. While I can't say if this is a strategy game for the long haul, it definitely falls into the cool 'game of the moment' category.
Gameplay (Benelux) (May 30, 2012)
Everyeye.it (May 20, 2012)
Out Of Eight (May 08, 2012)
Overall, people who really like this style of turn-based gaming should take a look at Warlock: Master of the Arcane (certainly for $20), but overall the game doesn’t add up to a truly unique experience.
Game Watcher (May 30, 2012)
To be fair, there’s nothing about Warlock that really turns you off from playing. It’s a classic 4X strategy game complete with all the staples that keep people hooked on these things. Some of its more unique spin on things do shine through, such as City management, but others like the added adventure/discovery element just get lost amongst the need to survive. The other dimensions portion of the game could really have been something special, but from where I’m sitting at the moment there’s neither the time nor the incentive to mount decent expeditions, especially not when an inevitable war stars. An ok start then, better than some Paradox games of late, but there’s still a lot of untapped potential.
GameSpot (May 21, 2012)
Warlock: Master of the Arcane is pretty good as it stands. It offers a reasonable challenge at its higher difficulties, presenting its best face--combat--almost immediately after you start the game. It's an incredible rush the first time you hold off an enemy great mage's swarm of units as it attacks one of your cities or you make your final push toward the foe's capital. There are some problems here, but Warlock feels fresh enough to keep you squashing the opposition until the wee hours of the morning.
Destructoid (May 18, 2012)
For all of its flaws, it's still a remarkably fun game with plenty of character. When you're commanding armies of dragons and giants to annihilate cities protected by ghost ships or rat snipers, it's easier to overlook the game's shortcomings. I know that I'll certainly be playing a few more campaigns, and once the multiplayer gets added I'll play even more.
GamingIllustrated.com (May 28, 2012)
Overall, it’s seemingly well balanced with easy to control mechanics. Enemy and your units AI is quite acceptable and in no-way hinders the game-play and the fun you will have when playing this game. Of course, the price is a huge selling point of this game, and for a game that sells under $18 (or under £13 in the UK), this is a must buy for any fan of the genre.
IGN (Jun 12, 2012)
As far as 4X strategy titles go, Warlock's gameplay is far more streamlined and accessible than the similar games it riffs on, and though it suffers from some wonky interface omissions, the combat-oriented focus makes for some enjoyably fast-paced matches. The lack of depth does wear thin over the long-haul after you've played a bunch of match to their conclusion, but you may find yourself reluctant to let go until you've fully experienced into each faction's magical might.
Game Over Online (Jun 15, 2012)
I sort of enjoyed Warlock, which might have something to do with the fact that I rarely play the 4X genre (I usually stick to story- or campaign-based games), and so it was a nice change of pace for me. But Warlock is colorful and entertaining, and it's budget-priced, so as long as you can stand some bugs and quirks, and as long as you don't mind that it doesn't break any new ground, then Warlock might be a game for you to consider, perhaps after waiting for a patch or two to come out first.
ComputerGames.ro (May 18, 2012)
I can’t deny that in a few months time, Warlock: Master of the Arcane could become an important pretender in the turn-based space, but right now, the competitor which it tries to emulate is a much more consistent alternative.
PC Games (Germany) (May, 2012)
Eurogamer.net (UK) (Jun 27, 2012)
Warlock sits very comfortably in the niche it's created for itself. It's certainly not about to reach out to anyone who doesn't like wargames, nor appeal to anyone who wants the broader scope of the Civilization series, but it does a perfectly good job as a tombola of fantasy combat nonsense, full of new and wonderful and silly surprises. What other game offers you the chance to smack a two-headed dragon upside the head with a giant angry tree?
Meristation (May 10, 2012)
Vandal Online (May 17, 2012)
Gamer.no (May 21, 2012)
Warlock is a streamlined strategy game, at a cut price, and that is absolutely no bad thing. It has a few unfortunate quirks, but if you fancy something a bit lighter and a bit more combat-focused than the usual fare, then you’ll get at least a few dozen hours of entertainment from this rather enjoyable title.
GamingUnion.net (May 16, 2012)
When it all comes together Warlock is a game that's only really missing a few key points to be an incredible experience, but it falls short on delivering the full package. Multiplayer as a free patch in the future definitely makes the game more enticing, and if you're the type of gamer who enjoys spending quite a bit of time running a solo campaign against multiple AI opponents, then it seems like Warlock was almost exclusively made for you. The amount of random hilarity that can happen (intentionally or otherwise) throws quite a curve in the typical turn based strategy equation, enough to make Warlock stand out in the crowd in a positive way. Definitely not a game for first-timers to the genre though.
CPU Gamer (May 27, 2012)
Warlock – Master of the Arcane is a bug-free experience that is fun for a little while, but ultimately nothing is done well enough to make this a game I’ll still be playing in a few months.
PC Gamer (Aug 11, 2012)
Exploring is fun, resource exploitation is basic and extermination is tedious. It’s an X-and-a-bit off being a great 4X strategy.
Splitkick (Jun 19, 2012)
Warlock’s hostile fantasy world charms you during its exploration; with armies that include human swordsmen, Lich Kings, fire demons, and artillery support in the form of lightning bolts. My “just one more turn” itch was scratched – a lot – with play sessions almost always exceeding three hours in length. The core ideas in Warlock are incredibly refreshing but the fun comes in spite of certain imbalances in the game. If you’re willing to fight with the system a little and want a unique take on turn-based strategy gaming, it’s hard to argue with $20 for Warlock: Master of the Arcane.
Calm Down Tom (Jun 08, 2012)
Interface glitches aside Warlock is a well rounded strategy game with enough depth to keep you entertained for hours. For £14.99 on Steam it is well worth a try for any strategy gamer.
newbreview.com (May 21, 2012)
Warlock is not quite the Master of Magic descendant we have been waiting for, but it tries hard, and almost succeeds. However, its small annoyances and samyness in some areas take it down a couple of steps from reaching it’s goal though. It’s a good effort though and we hope the developers keep trying.
GamingTrend (May 21, 2012)
Turn-based strategy games by their very nature often straddle an interesting place between tedious and addictive. The latter is required to make the former worth the effort. Unfortunately for Warlock: Master of the Arcane, unpolished gameplay and stiff competition from other titles in the genre leave an otherwise enjoyable game feeling unfinished. It’s decent fun for the $20 price point, but good graphics and a nice interface aren’t enough to mask poor AI and a complete lack of depth. I felt like a beta tester during most of the time I spent playing. In fact, if this was a beta instead of the final release, I could actually get pretty excited about this title. I could believe that the diplomacy, AI, and story were lacking only because they were still being developed. That’s perhaps the most disappointing thing about the game: underneath a poor execution lies several really good ideas that some extra time in development could have brought out.
ZTGameDomain (May 25, 2012)
All in all, I think Warlock: Master of the Arcane is a decent little strategy game. It has some problems, but that didn’t stop me from putting in over 15 hours into it. If you want to be really good at the game, you’ll need to become a rather hardcore player. This game is not really for the newcomers to the 4X genre, but if you enjoy a good challenge in the same vein as Civilization, you can still have a good time game for the inexpensive $20 price tag.
Jeuxvideo.com (May 22, 2012)
XGN (May 16, 2012)
Game Informer Magazine (May 09, 2012)
Warlock has its fair share of bugs, like the inexplicably broken “demolish building” function, but the larger issue lies in its underdeveloped systems. Other planes of existence await brave players to exploit their unique resources, but why bother? The significant force necessary to explore those dangerous dimensions are better deployed against the opponents you’re sure to be at war with directly. Why bother caring about what the gods think of you when there’s no consequence and trivial rewards for divine favor? As fun as combat is, it’s not enough to have me engaged in Warlock beyond my professional obligations.
Absolute Games (AG.ru) (May 28, 2012)
Impulse Gamer (May, 2012)
At a bargain price point, Warlock: Master of the Arcane will be just enough to keep those fantasy fans entertained without breaking the bank. Other low price point titles should strive to deliver what this game offers. Fun put down to the most basic denominator without getting too easy.
BGamer (May 24, 2012)
Its War. No really that’s all it is. Warlock builds on the success of its previous series “Majesty”, and capitalizes on what it does best. WAR. Story mode? Piff! Lets just make War, and maybe settle a few new cities, but lets always get back to the good stuff. WAR. Edwin Starr would have certainly had something to say about this…
But for all its warts, Warlock: Master of the Arcane is still kind of fun to play for those looking for less involved strategy gaming. I wouldn’t recommend it for any hardcore strategy gamer, but priced at $19.99, if you want to play a fantasy strategy game on par with Civilization’s level of difficulty (but without the extensive content), then pick it up.
Eurogamer.dk (May 29, 2012)
GameOver (Greece) (May 18, 2012)
Το Warlock Master of the Arcane είναι ένα απλό, stream-lined, turned based strategy παιχνίδι, που απευθύνεται σε αρχάριους και λειτουργεί σωστά. Για κάποιον που δεν έχει παίξει ποτέ turn based strategy τίτλο, το Warlock Master of the Arcane είναι μία καλή και τίμια πρόταση-εισαγωγή στην κατηγορία.
Level 7 (May 22, 2012)
Games.cz (Jun 20, 2012)
Příjemné překvapení pro všechny fanoušky žánru, kteří Civilizaci hrají především kvůli její bojové části - své válečnické choutky zde totiž ukojí do sytosti. Ostatní ale citelně pocítí absenci či jen letmou aplikaci ostatních prvků a vadit jim nejspíše bude i cheatující AI, absence klávesových zkratek a velmi malý počet možností, jak zvítězit.
Quarter to Three (May 14, 2012)
Multiplayer support could have taken up a lot of the slack on the issues, but Warlock is single-player only. Which is a shame given that the snappy pace, unique armies, and tactical detail are ideal for multiplayer. But tuning issues aside, Warlock is a fantasy strategy game that’s more than just Civilization with dragons and elves because it’s not Civilization at all. Far too many strategy games rely on Sid Meiers’ classic formula, often bogging down in the process. It’s nice to see a developer getting back to the basics and down in the trenches with goblins, werewolves, skeletons, dragons, clerics and the odd angry fireball.
GameSpy (May 16, 2012)
I really dig that Warlock tries so many different and unique ideas, but it's also so frustrating to see it make so many bizarre design decisions. Dedicated and studious players might be able to look past the limited information on how to play if they're familiar enough with the genre and don't mind learning by trial and error, but less patient newcomers will be left on the proverbial sidelines. To those newbies I suggest picking up Warlock's inspiration (Civilization 5) before diving headlong into this magical world of strategy.
Hooked Gamers (May 14, 2012)
At every turn, aspects about the game contributed to the sinking feeling that its developers must have had little love for their game or so much financial pressure that they released it unfinished. Playing Warlock, I felt like I was participating in a beta version of a game with tremendous great potential. The realization that it was the release version actually made me a little sad. Conceptually, Warlock: Master of the Arcane is a fantastic game but let down by extremely poor execution.
Factornews (Jun 02, 2012)
