Battlecry II is elegantly designed and readily accessible, but this game is also deeper than the Marianas Trench, It’ll take you weeks, even months, to discover all that this game has to offer. That’s a great thing to find in this age of games that can be played to their finish in a week and then are never touched again. Whether you’re an RPG fan or just love a good, original RTS design, Warlords Battlecry II will keep you coming back again and again.

As with the myriad of FPS (First Person Shooter) games that are released, in the genre of RTS (Real Time Strategy) there are often too few games that are worthwhile. By the rating above I’m sure you’ve no doubt guessed that I found Warlords Battlecry 2 (WBC2) worthwhile. I was so impressed by my first test run of the game that I had to forgo all other planned activities for four hours straight. Then, on the following two days, those hard working gaming sessions became seven hour periods. This game has proven to me to be more addictive than cigarettes after all night romps in the hay with my special friend. This game has been the most fun I’ve had in playing an RTS since Dungeon Keeper 2 and Warcraft 2.

In the end, Warlords Battlecry II is an accessible real-time game that showers you with things to do and discover. It's part turn-based strategy, part role-playing, and part action-oriented real-time strategy wrapped up inside a highly playable design. And best of all -- it's a lot of fun to play, and in the end that's about all you can ask from any game.

I've been playing too many damn RTSs since I've started working here at IGN. Thankfully, some of these manage to do some new things and keep my interest. Warlords: Battlecry was one of them. The sequel may not have a ton of really noticeable new things when it comes down to the real-time strategy aspect of play, but it definitely had enough to draw me through my jaded curtain and get me playing and interested again. And that's no longer an easy feat for an RTS.

This game is very enjoyable, and it has a great look. It is tough to manage at times, but with constant vigilance of what your army is doing, you can actually incorporate some strategic elements, which go a long way toward success. Newcomers to the genre should find this quite entertaining, and RTS veterans will enjoy the action.
GameSpot (Mar 12, 2002)
Warlords Battlecry II's many playable factions, persistent heroes, and dynamic campaign are innovative elements on top of a solid real-time strategy game. The original Warlords Battlecry was the one of the very first games to effectively use the concept of heroes in a multiplayer-focused real-time strategy game, before Shattered Galaxy or Blizzard's upcoming Warcraft III. If the multiplayer component ends up being popular on the matching service, it should be interesting to create a hero in the service's closed, server-side mode, which allows for competitive rankings. However, while the sequel makes a number of general improvements to the formula established by its predecessor, Warlords Battlecry II doesn't take a big leap forward. The game can be best recommended to players new to the series who are intrigued by the game's hero system.

Endlich wieder Echtzeitstrategie.

Despite the minor gripes, including lackluster graphics and sound, Warlords Battlecry II manages to be an engaging RTS experience. Having a hero to build up throughout the game provides an interesting motivation to play, and the newly structured campaign adds a tactical twist. Unless graphics are a deciding factor in what you buy, the title is worth checking out.

Except for the lack of a navy, my gripes with Warlords are quite superficial. This is a fun and extremely addictive title. When you talk about depth in a strategy game one would assume you're talking about how many different units are at your disposal. Warlords Battlecry II gives that term new meaning in the strategy genre. My hat is off to SSG and Ubi Soft. This title is definitely worth your buck.
Game Over Online (Mar 27, 2002)
While WB2 isn’t an award winner, it is a solid entry into the RTS genre. I think it disappoints by giving you simply more of what the first game had in plentitude, and in that sense it kind of fulfills the role of a big expansion pack, really. In part, it was the longevity of the first title that brought me to the sequel with the feeling that I’ve played it too much already. On the other hand, didn’t buy the first one? Missed it on the store shelves? Then I’d recommend buying WB2. But if you bought the first one, save yourself the $40 and just pull out the old one again – you won’t be missing anything of consequence.
Game Chronicles (Jul 29, 2002)
WLBC2 is an above average entrant into the extremely crowded genre of real-time strategy games. There is a lot of gameplay here, but if you’re primarily interested in a compelling single player story, you won’t find it here. What you will find, however, is a very innovative RPG component to greatly enhance the RTS standard fare.

ActionTrip (Mar 26, 2002)
In the end, I should say that Warlords Battlecry 2 will probably cause quite a bit of controversy amongst the fans of the serial. Some will love it and some might hate the fact that the game lacks any meaning or narrative. Because of this, the campaign mode simply seems lacking. However, when you get into the groove of things, the challenging AI might be able to keep you busy for a while. And then there's always the multiplayer mode.

Warlords Battlecry II is a competent challenger for your gaming time in the overcrowded real-time strategy genre. It’s not an innovative title, but it was made with a good deal of polish and will hold your attention for some time. Hardcore fans of the original won’t find many new features, but newcomers will find a well-executed strategy experience. Despite the problems, replay value is high due to the multitude of races, and the multiplayer and skirmish modes can produce truly fun gameplay experiences. Warlords Battlecry II is a noble effort from developer SSG with a few novel features to spice up the gameplay. I’d recommend it to any fan of quality real-time strategy titles.

So, what's the verdict on Warlords Battlecry II? Well, despite all the things that the game does right (options, heroes, resources, production queue, RPG elements), it's hard to get past the fact that, once you peel away all of the pretty layers, Warlords Battlecry II is just another RTS game where you send as many units as possible away to die. As I have stated, there are many different things that Warlords Battlecry II should be commended on, but the deal just hasn't been sealed effectively. Warlords Battlecry II sums up to be yet another average attempt at a RTS game in an overcrowded et. You might want to check it out if you enjoy or can forgive the combat, but I sure can't.
