Warlords

Although I certainly recommend this game, do be careful as it isn't as in depth as some strategic fans might like.

Warlords is a deep and challenging game that can be picked up almost from the word go. It does take a long time to play, but that will be a bonus, rather than a disadvantage, to the serious wargamer.

The game easily overcomes its few shortfalls (such as having only one game map and no option to modify units or land) through sheer depth of game play and the concomitant application of strategy needed against formidable computer or human opponents.

Being an absolute reference to the strategy genre, I rate Warlords with 4, mainly because of the plain graphics and sounds, and the lack of more maps. The successor fixes these issues, but this part is the real classic!

Ostatnio pojawiły się gry nowej generacji, zasługujące na to miano ze względu na swoją grafikę, efekty dźwiękowe i możliwość jednoczesnego udziału więcej niż dwóch graczy. Jedną z nich jest Warlords.

Det var inte så länge sedan jag skrev om PC-versionen av strategispelet Warlords, australiensiska SSG:s första titel på ett bra tag nu. På PC var det ett mycket underhållande spel, och jag lirade det med stor behållning i flera veckor.

Warlords is extremely simple and very playable. There's no challenge here for experienced wargamers, but I'd definitely recommend this for amateurs.

Amiga-Strategen mit Hang zu Fantasy-Storys dürfen sich freuen. Gibt es doch das Taktikspektakel Warlord für bis zu acht Spieler um Elfen, Zauberer und Rittersleute, nun auch für ihren Computer. Auf zwei Disketten befindet sich ein tadelloses Strategievergnügen, das bei der Umsetzung nicht gelitten hat, im Gegenteil, der Sound wurde noch mal aufgepeppt.

So schön kann das Ritterleben sein: Die "Warlords" scheinen direkt aus dem persönlichen Lieblings-Fantasyroman entsprungen. Selten zuvor habe ich ein Strategiespiel gesehen, das atmosphärisch soviel zu bieten hat. Die Handlung erschöpft sich eben nicht im dumpfen Verprügeln von gegnerischen Armeen, sondern öffnet eine ganze Welt mit Drachen, Tempelruinen, finsteren Zauberern und den unterschiedlichsten Rassen. Ein besonderes Lob gebührt der ausgeklügelten Schwierigkeitsabstufung: Jeder der acht Gegner kann in einer anderen Stärke antreten. Somit kann jede Spielrunde unter anderen taktischen Voraussetzungen gestartet werden. Auch wenn man schon diverse Male das Land Illuria gerettet hat, wird Warlords, dank dieser Option, nie langweilig.

Unless you've got a really deep-rooted hatred of wargames, Warlords is very definitely worth checking out. It will not appeal to everyone, but if you persevere with it you'll find it to be a real cracker of a game.

The game doesn't seem to gel as a great strategy, and although many D&D type wargamers will love this type of game, it is not a mainstream product. The graphics are, at best, described as appropriate for the setting, but not amazing, and sound likewise. I would certainly recommend a test drive before buying.

Die bescheidene Präsentation könnte man einem Strategiegame nachsehen, eine unausgewogene Handhabung und mangelnder Spielreiz sind jedoch auch und gerade in diesem Game unverzeihlich.
