Warsong

Warsong is a horridly overlooked game, and deserves to be recognized as both the classic and the pioneer that it is. Even if you're not a fan of slow turn-based games, no one can doubt the excitement of fighting full-on wars and the sheer adrenaline-pumping sweat-inducing intensity of difficult battles. Coming from a first-of-it's-kind game, that's saying something. Seek this title out and add it to your library. That's an order, soldier!

There are a lot of possible battle options and decisions to make. Warsong is a lot of fun and extremely challenging. In my opinion this is one of the best games on the Sega Genesis, and one of the best of its genre.

Fantastisch: Diese Übersetzung des Japano-Bestsellers ist allen Strategiespieleren uneingeschränkt zu empfehlen. Fantasievollere Aufgaben und kniffligere Taktiksituationen präsentiert momentan kein anderes Mega-Drive-Modul so benutzer- und einsteigerfreundlich. Anfänger haben's schnell kapiert - Profis werden erstaunt sein über die spielerischen Feinheiten und Gags, die sich hinter funktionellen Menüs verbergen. Die Rollenspielelemente (magische Waffen, neutrale Monster, die keiner der Parteien angehören, Charakterklassen und Beförderungen) würzen das Spiel und lassen schnell Suchterscheinungen aufkommen. Die Gesprächssequenzen sind ebenfalls eine gute Idee: So werden Aufgaben oder Missionen dem Spieler erklärt, ohne daß die dichte Fantasy-Atmosphäre zu Schaden kommt. Wer Englisch versteht und Strategie mag, muß zugreifen.

Als NCS' Long Raiser vor gut einem halben Jahr auf dem deutschen Importmarkt erschien, erkannten nur wenige die spielerische Tiefe und die fantastische Komplexität dieses Strategieknüllers. Das Handbuch sowie sämtliche Menüs und Texte im Spiel waren in Japanisch gehalten und damit für Normalsterbliche vollkommen unverständlich. Dank dem amerikanischen Hersteller Treco kommt das Spiel nun ein zweites Mal inoffiziell, bzw. als Import nach Deutschland: Warsong ist eine getreue Long Raiser-Übersetzung, angenehm gelettert und mit einem ebglischen Handbuch ausgestattet.

None of this really detracts from the great gaming experience that is Warsong, and there's a reason why it tops $50 on eBay. It's a wonderful game that's a perfect example of how the Genesis's strength is in its software and not its graphics. There's simply no reason why it shouldn't be in your collection.

Only a true masochist who enjoys pointless exercises in tedium would find something delightfully new in Warsong not found in one of the other installments in the Langrisser series. The tenth anniversary of the Langrisser series is being celebrated this April 26th, marked by the release of Langrisser I, but I know I won't be doing any serious celebrating until the tenth anniversary of Langrisser II...
