There's really two ways of looking at this release. To a casual gamer who is looking for a lengthy single player romp and extensive online modes, they're going to find this game too sparse, too strange, and too expensive. To importers and other niche gamers, they'll be thrilled for Ubisoft to take such a risk in releasing a game that seemed certain to remain behind in Japan, and other than renaming the game and providing a different cover, have been absolutely faithful to the original, maintaining its original art and voices. So I suppose depending on what camp you fall under, you know what to do.

Where WarTech manages to slip up is that it will leave you wanting more. Whether you want to beat that high score or take on new opponents, there is always a new barometer available. Yes, there is a degree of slow down when the screen becomes cluttered or during close combat, but nothing that really hampers the bouts. The developer has also included a guide and encyclopedia to enable you to follow the background story and conversations between characters. Complete with a strong sense of artistic design, you have a real gem of a title that will keep you challenged for months to come.

Xbox 360Worth Playing
Wartech: Senko no Ronde could be a pretty fun online game. It's not perfect, and the limited amount of characters will quickly grow tiresome to some, but those who really enjoy the bullet wave-filled combat will enjoy testing out their skills online. However, fun online play can't make up for a completely lackluster and poorly designed single-player game. With boring AI, incoherent stories and an almost complete lack of replay value, there is very little to do if you're not playing this title on Xbox Live.

WarTech: Senko no Ronde's presentation doesn't completely astonish and the multiplayer could've been better, but the all-important mech fighting offers hours of enjoyment. Gamers eager for a twist on routine shooting action should try it.

Overall, WarTech:Senko no Ronde is a pure arcade title through and through, but the inclusion of a few added extras and online play don’t really dignify the expensive price tag, if you can get find it for cheap somewhere, there are much worse games you can buy.

The innovative fighting style and galactic backdrop are a few of WarTech’s saving graces when considering it’s a full-priced Xbox 360 title. This doesn’t mean that WarTech is a bad game; in fact, it’s actually quite entertaining, but there’s just not enough here to warrant the price tag. A cut down Xbox Live Arcade version of WarTech would have made total sense. Heck, even dropping this instantly to “budget” status would probably expose a lot more eyes to a decent game that has already been swept under the carpet.

Xbox 360GameSpot
WarTech: Senko no Ronde attempts to straddle the line between a shooter and a fighting game. You have a top-down view of the action and fire off a lot of big shots, as if it was some sort of scrolling shooter, but you're actually shooting at another similarly armed opponent. You're also given life meters and super attacks, as if it was a fighting game. The idea is an interesting one, but it doesn't come together in a very appealing way. To add insult to injury, Ubisoft is trying to charge full price for what is, essentially, a shallow arcade port that would be more at home as a downloadable Xbox Live Arcade release.

Good fun but only for a couple of hours and then you’ll start to look elsewhere for your thrills, the nice graphics and audio are sadly wasted on a game that tries to cross two genres but fails to successfully nail either of them. The online modes and achievements are also not easy to get to grips with so I can’t really recommend this game for points either. A fun rental but no more than that.

WarTech: Senko no Ronde feels incoherent and out of place. The arcade shooter concept that it is built upon is sound but the follow-through just isn't there. There is little to be interested in here outside of the multiplayer mode, Even then, the unsatisfying controls limit what strives to be a unique experience. This attempt at modernizing an old school design perhaps would have been more at home with 2D graphics and an Xbox Live Arcade release.

But then comes the unfortunate damning part: the $60 price tag. While WarTech could pass as a mildly charming budget game (or, better yet, as an Xbox Live Arcade game), it simply doesn't have enough content or depth to justify the standard 360 price tag. Online play and Achievements don't warrant a $60 price for something that would probably sell for less than $20 on the PS2.

WarTech left me with my chin on the ground. There’s a lot to be learned from Wartech. Not all Japanese Xbox 360 releases fit well with the U.S. market, especially when the localization crew feels that if they just added subtitles that all the problems would be solved with the storyline. Like I said, I had high hopes. It might have been because of my adoration with the Japanese culture. It might have been because of wanting a diverse group of games to play on my 360. Whatever the reason of my blind faith in the Japanese market, WarTech let me down and it’s an utter shame.

There is little in the way of discernable strategy or skill, the controls are never explained and they're unresponsive once you do figure them out. If this game had a head, it should hang it in shame for claiming to be a part of the 360 library.
