This cheat probably won't get you very far nowadays, unless you are such a diehard fan of Wasteland that you play it off floppy disks. I mention it here, however, because I was pretty darn proud of myself when I found it, and I think it's interesting enough to share.
If you played Wasteland on a computer without a hard drive (like I originally did), there was a utility you could run that would allow you to create "game disks" before you could play. This was kind of annoying since it took quite a while to do... but the end result was a set of floppy disks with a brand new game of Wasteland on them, just waiting to be played.
Whenever you enter a new area in the game (i.e. enter a town from the desert, or enter another part of the map), the game saves the status of the area you are leaving, and loads the status of the area you are entering from the disk. On its own, this isn't especially significant.
However, if you create a second set of game disks, you have a second "fresh" version of the game, with all areas intact (i.e. all the bad guys and loot where they belong). What this allows you to do is to swap the floppy before entering a new area, then enter it and it will load the area off the "new" disk -- effectively resetting everything there. Immediately switch back to your "real" game disk and save the game again, and the change is permanent. This is especially handy for resetting areas with lots of items, cash, or baddies to kill (such as the Guardian Citadel).
Keep in mind, though, that your "new" game disk will have the status of whatever area you are LEAVING saved to it; so for example, entering the second area of the Guardian Citadel after killing everyone in the first area will save the status of the first area to your "new" disk, so you will not be able to use that disk to reset that area any longer. I suppose this could be overcome by maintaining a vast array of fresh game disks and just swapping them willy-nilly... but in reality, nobody plays the game on floppy any more, so it probably wasn't even worth my time to type this all in.
Oh well. Hope you enjoyed it. :) |
