For me the most entertaining, most thought out and most innovative adventure this year - at least up to today. Even concerning the low dubbing level - which will not disturb a German gamer as much as someone with English native language - it belongs to the very recommendable games of 2002. "The Watchmaker" shows that it is quite possible to implement a tidy mouse control into a 3D-game. The game offers various tasks and puzzles and much freedom to solve them. If you think you can cope with the English version (with English sub-titles), you shouldn't miss it.

Produced in Italy - three years in the making - The Watchmaker has been dubbed with English dialog and has recently been released in North America. When I started playing the game, I was struck by its quality. The engine reminded me of Gabriel Knight III, and the game play reminded me a lot of the Tex Murphy games. Since I loved those titles, you can imagine I liked this one from the git-go. The Watchmaker is an epic 3D point and click graphic adventure with many animated cut scenes. The graphics are exceptional, the music average, and the English voice acting is good to poor. But, hey, the game play is right up there with the best of any US produced titles. I was very pleasantly surprised.

Overall, The Watchmaker is a game for seasoned adventure gamers due to its complex and difficult puzzles. This game is perfect for exigent players who demand challenging gameplay and excellent graphics, all packaged in a sophisticated plot. This game is long, so be prepared to spend many days (and night) playing it. Undoubtedly, Trecision has created a truly inspired adventure game, with enough innovative features to make The Watchmaker a classic.
The Watchmaker is a beautiful game to behold, with an excellent and efficient interface and control management scheme. The story is compelling, the puzzles are logical, and the characters are interesting. You'll have moments of frustration, puzzlement, even boredom, in your 40+ hours of mystery unraveling, but, at the end, I'm convinced that you, like me, will find the journey well worth the effort. We're grateful to Trecision for making the game and to Got Game Entertainment for releasing it here, and we truly hope this will be the first of other Darrel and Victoria adventures!
As well as impressive graphics there is also a good sound track that is at times haunting and dramatic. In certain scenes the music quite reminded me of the Gabriel Knight games. Unfortunately, the voice acting of several characters is below par for this type of production, though I thought Victoria was quite good and I tended to take her for most of my exploration. Speaking of voices, a few times during conversations the speech would suddenly fade out for no apparent reason. This was no big deal as I had enabled subtitles, and quitting and restoring always fixed the problem. Also, as both Darrel and Victoria can ask the same questions there was some conversational repetition that could have been remedied by 'greying out' redundant questions for both characters. You can click through repeats at any time so I took advantage of this.
Overall, The Watchmaker is a nice enough adventure. It has some depth, and you won’t breeze through it in under ten hours, but it’s also a little sloppy, and the voice acting is awful. Hopefully Trecision can take the game engine, which works pretty well, polish it up a little, and then take their experiences from The Watchmaker and create something really good in the future.
This title actually reminded me of the classical detective shows on TV, and the puzzles you need to solve are both challenging and logical. The downside is that The Watchmaker is not exactly the king on the technological side, and with unrealistic voice acting it doesn't feel as intriguing as the awesome point-and-click adventure games from the beginning of the 90s. Back then you had both humor, great characters and really exciting plots. The Watchmaker tries to set the mood for a modern mystery, but fails to scare and make me laugh, so I would say that this is a title you should only go for if solving puzzles is your favorite pastime, or if you're simply a big fan of the genre.
The game gets more dramatic as well. As night falls, the game finally starts generating suspense, using the dual protagonists to better effect and throwing some danger your way. The Watchmaker would have been a better game had there been more of this danger from the beginning. Still, fans of traditional adventure games will enjoy the puzzles and will likely be able to bear with the awful voice acting and the underdeveloped story. And given the current drought of such games, they don't really have much of a choice.

Despite the problems, I found myself enjoying this game more than I had believed I would. This was a decent offering, and I look forward to seeing what Got Game and Trecision will bring us in the future.
Enter the world of The Watchmaker, a new third-person / first-person multi-character adventure game. Never heard of such a thing before? You have now, and it’s an interesting jaunt. In The Watchmaker players have the choice of playing as Victoria Conroy, Legal Eagle or Darrel Boone, Ghost Buster. This is a move sure to please those concerned that only having a male or female character in a game may reflect a subconscious sexism. But the multi-character idea is not really about sex, it about teamwork.
Overall, I found myself enjoying the game once it picked up, and even getting into the story. Almost every non-player character you meet in the game has at least a tangential significance to the events at hand, and fishing this information out of them can be quite fun (even with all the extraneous dialogue). When you begin to uncover some of the shadier recesses of the castle, you'll find them to be much more interesting than the castle you're initially presented with. And by the end, the game can sometimes be pretty memorable, assuming you're able to put up with the voices of everyone you come across along the way.
Sure this review has been a little harsh, but I don't want anyone to think we are recommending an adventure product only because it does not have a publisher. The bottom line is that The Watchmaker is a game that grows on you and has you thinking about it even during non-gaming hours. As it is now, if Watchmaker were released in North America it would just be one more game sitting on the store shelves after being lambasted by the gaming magazines. If the few minor annoyances were to be corrected - the 3D clipping, the languid music, the pixel hunting - then Watchmaker could possibly develop a devoted following especially in the wake of foreign upstarts like The Longest Journey.
"Poor execution" is the best way to describe The Watchmaker. I did enjoy the storyline and the general idea of this game; however, it is tough to appreciate a good story with such a high "Argh" factor. Most shortcomings have their built in workaround: the voice acting and situational camera angles come to mind here. In spite of this, there are too many things holding this game back in what you see, what you hear, and how you play it.
The Watchmaker deserves major kudos for novelty, for breaking out of a standard mode with innovative cooperative two-player puzzle solving, and for making a single setting utterly absorbing; but clearly the title has some key gaps in execution. Little elements of polish and coherence are missing, anomalies abound, and you are too often left in the dark about what to do next to get the job done in a reasonable amount of time. So if you crave a trip to a central European castle to explore supernatural questions, go ahead and give this one a try, but otherwise you might wait for the clock to tick further until a more appealing virtual adventure emerges.
Great puzzles are essential for good adventure games, but there are other aspects a developer has to take in consideration. The gamer must be interested enough in the story to play further. There should always be the feeling of urgency. The presentation, such as graphics and sound should force the player to take "one more thing before quitting for the night" for hours to come, and before the player knows, the night is half over. Nothing of this was present in The Watchmaker. The game falls short of expectations, and will not appeal to anybody but the most hardcore adventure gamer. The rest of the adventure gamers should look elsewhere.

Jeszcze ktoś pomyśli, że gra się podoba i wpadnie na pomysł zrobienia kolejnej części przygód Darrela i Victorii, czego sobie i nikomu innemu nie życzę...
