Although both games are based on the same technology, I personally prefer "Crime Patrol" to "Johnny Rock". After having played "Crime Patrol" for hours, I have become disappointed with "Johnny Rock" because of its simplicity. Players have no need to reload their gun after shooting and they can foresee where the criminals will appear. In fact, there is no randomness related to the location where a gangster will pop up which makes the game too easy. Besides, I am not convinced by the digitized footage and the music is much livelier in "Crime Patrol".

Who Shot Johnny Rock? offers arcade excitement, machine gun thrills, and more desperate characters than San Quentin, with multiple endings (depending on who's the murderer), there's good replay value, too. 3DO owners who liked Mad Dog McCree will get a new challenge from this one.

You couldn't ask for a simpler interface, and there's lot of bang-bang. Games like this need good graphics--and Johnny Rock doesn't have 'em. Video-card compatible problems don't help either. If you want a CD-ROM shooter, with live action video, pass this one up.

Unless you have the American Laser Games Game Gun, you probably won't get very far in this move-the-cursor-and-shoot game (as was the case in the earlier Mad Dog McCree) - the control pad is just too slow. For the 3DO system, Johnny Rock suffers inexplicably substandard graphics (the images are so blurry you can't tell what's going on a times) and frustrating gameplay. There is plenty of action and the whodunnit aspect of the game is welcome, but the technical aspects hamper the overall product.

Tekijät pyytelevät anteeksi onnetonta toteutusta mukana tulleessa tekstitiedostossa. Kuulemma karkea toteutus johtuu pakkausalgoritmeistä ja hitaista CD-ROM-asemista. Selitys kuitenkin ontuu sikäli, että paljon skarpimpiakin kokokuvan videodigitointeja on nähty. Mitä jää jäljelle pelistä jonka tekninen toteutus on täysin luokatonta ja jonka juoni on tarttunut "näyttelijöiden" kurkkuun? Aivan, ei mitään.

My Baby, Baby Baller Baller

There are some neat little ideas in the game, I will admit. I like how your "lives" are tracked through money; get hit and you have to pay the doctor, don't have any left and you die. You can get more money by going to the casino and playing a randomly assigned "lucky number," or by completing a stage. I like the overhead map that allows some non-linear choices about where you want to go next. I even like the idea of a 1920's gumshoe shooter. But damn, I do not like the hit detection. It's as if they knew something was wrong and quickly gave you infinite continues as a chance to beat the game as it was rushed out the door. Even still, it feels like a mistake. It's a short game anyway, and just isn't much fun when you spend those six or so hours exclusively trying to remember the order bad guys appear in. Hopefully other ports pulled this off better.

It's too bad, really. I wanted to like this game. It had a nice looking woman on the cover, a Humphrey Bogart-esque plot, and an allusion to the "Who shot J.R.?" cliffhanger from the television show Dallas. For these reasons alone, I can't give it the absolute worst rating on our scale. Unfortunately, though, the excessive waiting for a few seconds of live action just isn't worth it.
