Arcade Specs

Description

3 Count Bout is a one-on-one fighting game. Choose from ten wrestlers who have their own power attacks. There are ten rounds in the game, and each one of them has you fighting other wrestlers that are much tougher than the previous ones. You defeat each one by biting, kicking, and performing other moves to the point where their damage meter is empty. But just because it is empty doesn't mean that you win. You have to pin him for the infamous-three count. Also features competitive play and tag match battles.

Not fun.

The Good
The graphics are good. Most of the grappling moves look awesome. The electrified ropes in the third and sixth bout.

The Bad
I hated the fact that to win grapples, you had to hit the buttons really fast. This made the game impossible by the second round. 3 Count Bout also feels more like a fighting game at times, and that just doesn't feel right for a wrestling game. I hated how you can only move around the top part of the screen. I hate how 2 of the characters are just palette swaps of already existing wrestlers.

The Bottom Line
It had potential, thanks to the nice graphics and passable animation, but the gameplay mechanic of having to hit buttons really fast to win grapples just ruins the experience. Maybe SNK thought that by making the 1 player game impossible, that it would increase the number of 2 player games. That isn't what happened, instead it just made 3 Count Bout a bad arcade game.
