If baseball is your thing, you could do a lot worse than Bases Loaded. It offers lots of replay value if playing with a friend, and if you are determined enough working through a season will no doubt take you several weeks of determined play. However, while Bases Loaded has aged gracefully and still offers a solid gaming experience, realistically you are going to probably get more enjoyment out of Baseball Stars 2 for the Neo Geo, which is also available on the Virtual Console. Nevertheless this is still worth considering as another take on the beloved American sport.
Bases Loaded isn't a terrible baseball game, it's just incredibly basic. It's also harmed quite a bit by the fact that the Neo Geo hit Baseballs Stars 2 is already available for download in the Wii Shop as well, as it's much more worth a look even at a pricepoint four dollars higher than Loaded here. Those fans who first followed Jaleco's Bases Loaded series in the late '80s and early '90s might still want to invest 500 Wii Points to get a nostalgic fix, but for everyone else this one is a miss. Maybe next season.
Still the game isn’t without its charm. The experience is still fun even if the game hasn’t aged all that well. Going through a full season is pretty daunting but as a multiplayer game, it’s still enjoyable. The sound effects are pretty primal but it doesn’t have some voice overs from the umpires and the music is still as catchy as ever, especially when smashing a homerun. Gamers who have never experienced this game, may find it too slow to play but for those who remember the game fondly, it’s still a fun game to pull out when friends are over from time to time.
