Harry Potter has some new competition with the release of Billy the Wizard: Rocket Broomstick Racing. Players can choose from eight young wizards-in-training before hitching a ride on a rocket-propelled broomstick and soaring across the skies. Multiple activities include collecting flying spell books, defeating a specific number of dragons, and racing against up to three human or computer opponents. Characters can fire magic-based projectiles to hinder the competition's progress as they navigate through rings in the "Broomstick Grand Prix." Over 30 levels of high-flying high jinks await players across six game modes.

I gave up after trying three of the six short races and the simple shooting and collecting mini-games. Life's too short. I'm never going back, and God forbid gathering people together for the multi-player mode. If the controls don't kill me, the irritating farting ditty in the background just might. That's the last time I play this dreadful excuse for a racing game.

There is actually a hint of cruelty in Nintendo allowing this game -- and many of Conspiracy Entertainment's budget Wii games -- to crowd shelves. They are just disappointment pressed into a disc, hidden inside a colorful box like some sort of gaming booby trap. Billy the Wizard is easily one of the worst games for the Wii and the kind of thing that kills momentum, much like that final crushing wave of crap that sealed the fate of the seemingly unstoppable Atari 2600.

Terrible controls. Very repetitive levels. Derivative and cheesy premise.

Watching your glitchy avatar rotate in thin air like the remote pointer hand on the Wii menu may raise a sneering smile, but the rest of this detritus will do its best to kick it off your face.
