I've made no secret in past reviews and columns that FFIV is my favorite game ever made. It is the title that took me from a casual RPG player into someone who now writes about them twenty years later. Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is not only a very respectful treatment of the original, it also makes me want to dust off my SNES and relive my innocent childhood love of games.
For fans of Final Fantasy IV, this is a welcome continuation of many peoples' favorite game in the series. It's retro in every way that made RPGs of that era fun, and the new additions give it a bit of a modern feel. If you’re new to the series, it may feel awkward trying to get into the story-- it'd be helpful to know the characters' histories, but unnecessary to follow this new story. Therefore, it’s well worth the price for a quality title in a storied franchise. The only real problem with the staggered release is that once you’ve really gotten into the story and are starting to wonder where things are going, the credits roll and you have to wait to find out the rest. Regardless, it’s an experience that many people could and should enjoy.
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years est une suite réussie. Elle reprend avec cohérence l'univers et les personnages du jeu original en y ajoutant de nouveaux venus et de nouveaux éléments en combat. Le découpage en chapitres un peu déroutant au début se révèle au final peu gênant, le tout étant porté par un chapitre final difficile mais réussi. Long, old school avec un touche novatrice, suite réussie d'un très bon jeu, ce "FFIV-2" remplit son rôle avec brio, et il eut été dommage que seuls nos amis japonais puissent en profiter.
While I will need to come back to this game in a month to complete act two, I am already sold on Final Fantasy IV: The After Years as being the crowning jewel to WiiWare for 2009. The game sounds great, looks great, plays well, feels old-school, and has a deep and interesting plot with characters we already know and love. What more can you ask for..?
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years isn't meant for first-time RPG players or for those in search of an epic storytelling experience. Instead, it's an engaging "thank you" for fans of the original game that's heavy on nostalgia without relying entirely upon it. Its dated graphics, battle system, and presentation are all a part of the charm after all, with everything else serving as a bonus. Plus, who knows? With its episodic nature and three months worth of additions coming down the pipeline, maybe The After Years will eventually be strong enough to stand on its own to deliver the 50-hour adventure modern RPG fans demand. Either way, it's great to see the Kingdom of Baron once again -- and I'm glad to know that it won't be the last time.
Well if you are a fan of the Final Fantasy games at all and are looking for a good single player RPG then look no further. But if you dislike the older Final Fantasy games and are not willing to buy new content to extend the game you should look elsewhere.
The After Years is an unusual experiment for the Final Fantasy franchise, but it’s one that’s already working its powerful magic on us. The story is smartly structured to tease you along, intermittently revealing important and interesting tidbits, before leaving you hanging. Rydia’s Tale, the first of the optional DLC chapter installments, is already available to ease the withdrawals that set in. This series is a must have for Final Fantasy IV addicts, though new players might be scratching their noggins trying to keep up. If you've played Final Fantasy 4 and crave a second helping: dig in. If you haven't played Final Fantasy 4, you might as well play After Years instead, because the very least, you can probably get it cheaper.
Fans of the 16-bit Final Fantasy releases should find plenty to wrap themselves around in this continuation of the Final Fantasy IV storyline. The game offers quite a bit of length and game play for your 800 Wii Points, but having to purchase additional packs in order to enjoy the side stories is obviously going to rub some gamers the wrong way, especially considering that there are eight additional packs to buy in order to wrap up the entire story line. If you appreciate retro visuals and 'traditional' RPG game play then this is obviously a game you'll want to consider, but those of you looking for a more modern Final Fantasy experience might want to spend your hard-earned pennies elsewhere. The classic game play elements on display here might prove to be a bit too simplistic for modern RPG fans, even with the new game play additions.
They are, of course, entirely optional but the sort of people most likely to be attracted to a SNES-styled sequel to a 1991 JRPG are also those most likely to want every last drop of gameplay. Perhaps more than any other genre, this is the one where you know that simply playing the main storyline is less than half the experience. With that in mind, while The After Years is a treat for fans in concept and execution, it’s a slap in the face from a commercial standpoint.
Développé dans la même optique qu'a pu l'être Final Fantasy VII : Before Crisis sur mobile, Final Fantasy IV : Les Années Suivantes est un complément indispensable à l'épisode original. Destiné exclusivement aux joueurs ayant terminé et apprécié le quatrième volet de la série, le titre a pour principal défaut sa diffusion épisodique payante et son approche très old-school qui rebutera un certain public. Ceux qui attendaient cette "suite" sans y croire n'ont, en revanche, aucune hésitation à avoir.

Si parlava di Megaman 9 come un titolo simile nella concezione a The After Years: entrambi volutamente “vecchi” nell’aspetto e nella giocabilità. Ma se il robottino di Capcom riusciva a dimostrare a tutti i (tanti) pregi della vecchia scuola, da un design dei livelli perfetto a un grado di sfida che stimolava il giocatore, il titolo Square-Enix mette in risalto invece gli (altrettanto numerosi) difetti delle produzioni passate, e risulta un divertimento per pochi.
The After Years är en nästan överraskande kompetent hommage till sin föregångare och mina ungdomsminnen av Final Fantasy IV gör att jag sväljer hela paketet med hull och hår. Men även om det ofta närmar sig förlagans klass så är det aldrig att det överträffar det, lägg därtill att handlingen är en rak uppföljare så kan man inte egentligen rekommendera The After Years till de som inte redan kört originalet.
With its flawed storytelling, shamelessly recycled plot, and frustrating encounter rate, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is a hard pill to swallow for even the most dedicated of fans. At only 800 Wii points it may sound like a deal, but when you factor in the cost of all the subsequent add-ons (which are optional, but necessary to get the entire story) and concluding chapter, you'll be paying full retail prices. If you're willing to shell out that much and you've got a hankering to revisit Cecil's world, you could do much better with the Nintendo DS remake of Final Fantasy IV.
Final Fantasy IV: The After Years is an unnecessary game through and through, as it continues a story that was already well-thought out and closed off years ago. If you are still somehow curious about how Cecil kept his wonderful, golden hair after seventeen years, there's nobody stopping you, but be warned - and listen well, Square Enix, if you're reading this - a little deformed fifteen-year old sprite can only be groomed so much.
