This year's game delivers the most complete and immersive version of Hogwarts yet and if you love the universe that J.K. Rowling created, you will undoubtedly find great entertainment in exploring the immense school in all of its many intricacies. Mixing potions is an enjoyable diversion. Dueling is still a little unbalanced, but intense. And Quidditch is fast and frenzied. Unfortunately, the story connecting all of these elements unfolds like Half-Blood Prince for Dummies -- quick snippets of key plot points realized by way of unpolished cut-scenes. It all suffices, but it could be so much more. Still, I definitely recommend Half-Blood Prince to Potter fans, especially if you liked last year's game. That is, though, also one of my main complaints -- specifically, that it shares too much in common with its predecessor.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince goes to show how far EA have come with the license. Instead of forcing the player the follow the storyline to an early finish, here you have the freedom to take to it at your own pace and explore the vast surroundings of Hogwarts. It's still a short experience overall and can get slightly repetitive but this is by far the best of the Harry Potter games incorporating some interesting elements that diversify the gameplay and will make fans of the series incredibly happy. And for those not a fan, it can still provide some good heartfelt enjoyment.

Overall Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince is disappointingly short and could have done with more variation in the selection of mini-games. However, what we do get is a well-polished, nicely presented game which incorporates motion controls intelligently.

Erst gegen Ende kommt endlich etwas Action ins Spielgeschehen. Nur für Fans!

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince certainly improves on its predecessor in many ways; it’s visually more arresting and there’s more variety to the gameplay. Sadly, the addition of the potion-making class and Quidditch hasn’t really granted the game the depth it probably deserves, and those of you that disliked Order of the Phoenix are unlikely to be swayed by this sequel; it’s essentially more of the same, with a different plotline underpinning the action. It’s aided by the fact that it’s based on what is arguably a more exciting and epic book than its forerunner was, and if you consider yourself to be potty over Potter then you’ll be spellbound by this. It’s just a shame that this feels more like a continuation rather than a fully-fledged enhancement.

Game Vortex
Think about it: J.K. Rowling has created a seamless fantasy world with her books, complete with elements that practically beg to be translated into gameplay mechanics. Yet, we're still left with games that can be described as amateur at best. If you're a casual gamer and a hardcore Harry Potter fan, you'll like some parts of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. If you're a hardcore gamer and a hardcore Harry Potter fan, this game was not made for you. As a fan of the series, I'm frustrated that game developers still can't help this series break out of its shell, despite already having six of seven (or eight) games under the belt. If the developers choose to emulate the decision of the filmmakers, there could be two more Harry Potter games. From where I'm standing, though, it looks like the potential of this franchise may go forever untapped.

While the game was delayed for a few months after the movie was delayed, I can say that I was happy to see a noticeable improvement over Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix. Still, the lack of variety and depth in terms of the activities offered by the game and the speed in which you could run through it (around 5 hours) makes Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for the Wii a worth checking-out but not necessarily a must-own game.

Console Obsession
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is essentially a retread of Order of the Phoenix, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The new additions will be enough to get the attention of fans of J.K Rowling’s creation, but non-fans who have played the previous game will perhaps feel a little disappointed at the lack of new features present.

Game Over Online
Targeted at the younger audience, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a decent game overall, but it doesn’t live up to the potential and grandeur of the Harry Potter legacy. The mini-games are fun enough to play and will keep you interested for a good while, but the actual storyline can be played through rather quickly. That doesn’t change the fact that Harry Potter fans everywhere are going to want to get their hands on this game, if only because it says Harry Potter on it, despite its mediocrity.

Cheat Code Central
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on Wii offers a completely average and somewhat lazy adventure. The story is shown little love, which is confusing, considering the game costs five times that of a movie ticket. The mini-games are fun and well-constructed, but they’re overused and often abused. That being said, there’s great value in being able to freely roam the hallowed halls of Hogwarts. The school is both charming and slightly creepy, and EA probably would have done well to simply offer fans all the various components of the game, minus the story, since it only serves to trip up the experience.

Before playing Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, you should first be a huge Harry Potter fan. Second, you should have a high tolerance for backtracking and mini-game repetition. Third, you must be able to enjoy a game that isn't challenging (some players just can't do that). There are tons of trivial, easily-awarded trophies and a bunch of other collectible extras that should appeal to a certain crowd. But for most, this game won't outlast the lifespan of a rental.

The version of the game you play depends on which you’d prefer: somewhat better graphics or interesting controls. Either way, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince isn’t worth buying at full price for any system; five hours is far too short, especially for a game this repetitive. The almost complete absence of plot is another glaring problem, and although the mini-games can be entertaining, you’re better off renting it for a weekend or borrowing the game from a friend. After a couple of days, you’ll have done almost everything there is to do, and as a huge Harry Potter fan who has now played through the game twice, I was completely underwhelmed. Perhaps for the seventh movie adaptation, game developers will finally be able to turn the franchise into a great gaming experience, but it hasn’t happened yet.

So is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince worth the price tag? Well, it does have a certain charm and is by no means an awful game, but by the same token it lacks the depth and polish to deliver a memorable performance. Perhaps our strongest criticism is that the playing time is extremely short: four to five hours to completion – probably a little more if you want to get in a little overtime mixing potions or duelling your mates. This one’s strictly for the young Harry Potter fans.

Game Informer Magazine
This game is the mother of all collect-a-thons, showering Harry with things to snatch up with almost every step he takes. This aspect is overblown, annoying, and far from entertaining, yet ends up being the primary thing to do. Wand dueling periodically arises, but for whatever reason, Harry's spells are overpowered to the point that most foes can be vanquished with one hit. Quidditch, which has devolved into ring flying, ends up being another unwanted distraction. The enjoyable potion mixing minigame is the only area where this game harnesses any of J.K. Rowling's magic. The remainder of the game, which is largely collecting, delivers an experience akin to getting whacked in the face with the stupefy spell.

Had we not already explored a remarkably similar Hogwarts last time out the impressive size and detail of the virtual school would perhaps be a selling point on it's own. Unfortunately with the novelty worn off we're forced to cast a keener eye on the game content provided within its grounds. Sadly the lack of variety and repetitive nature of what's there does little more than throw the half hearted story telling and horrible voice acting into even sharper relief. For Harry Potter devotees there's fun to be had simply spending time in the game world, however, those who demand a little more meat on their gaming bones may want to look elsewhere.

Young Harry Potter fans will likely play The Half-Blood Prince and have a good time. The game holds your hand throughout and does a good job at recreating Hogwarts, but anyone with any serious gaming experience will find the whole thing to be too simplistic and at times dull. There's little to no challenge present throughout the entire game, the story only makes sense if you already know the plot and there's a lack of things to do outside of the three main gameplay mechanics. Buy if you're a mega fan, but avoid if you like your games with even a tiny amount of depth.

When it comes down to it, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is just a pretty looking sandbox game with three mini-games. These games are interesting, but gameplay variety is a second thought, and so is the story. The only people who should bother with this game are Harry Potter fans who can forgive the game for its misgivings and focus on the impressive-looking world and the nice Wii controls.

Cubed3
The Half-Blood Prince is certainly better than some of the abysmal movie tie-ins of recent years, but it's also far from being a must-buy title. The world of Hogwarts has been faithfully recreated in ready-to-be-explored detail, but its core gameplay simply isn't that exciting. If you're a die-hard Potter fan you'll probably enjoy soaking up the finely tuned atmosphere, but everyone else can safely steer clear.

AceGamez
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is certainly prince-like in terms of its presentation but pretty half-arsed when to comes to the gameplay experience. Just wandering around, exploring Hogwarts and its surroundings is wonderfully atmospheric, and the potions brewing game is the most fun I've had with my Wii so far this year, but the other two activities are simplistic and manage to become repetitive despite the almost criminally short lifespan of the game, while the story is hard to follow even if you've seen the film and read the book. It's a backwards step from the superior Order of the Phoenix and especially disappointing given the extra development time after the delay of the film's release; there's only one more chance to create the Harry Potter game we've all been waiting for (or perhaps two, given that Deathly Hallows is set to be a two-part movie) so we just have to hope that EA take the best of what has come before to conjure up something truly magical.

Overall, The Half Blood Prince is certainly an improvement on The Order of the Phoenix but it’s still nothing amazing. The highlight of the game is the re-creation of Hogwarts … everything else is a little too familiar. I can’t help but wonder why they continue to make these Harry Potter games. They’re all the same … walk around the grounds, collect stuff, find stuff, talk to student A, find passage B …

Harrys Verwirrungszauber zeigte leider keine allzu lange Wirkung.

Worth Playing
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for the Wii simply does not have enough magic in it to fly on its own. Wandering around Hogwarts might be novel enough to draw in dedicated Harry Potter fans, but everyone else should avoid it. It's not a cringe-worthy game, but it's more useless and boring than Cornelius Fudge.

Though we're happy EA revisited the sandbox structure, everything that made the previous outing a solid game has been sacrificed in exchange for simpler controls and gimped action in Half-Blood Prince. If you truly want to relive the excitement and memories of the sixth chapter of Harry's struggle against Voldemort, wait just a bit longer for the film adaptation. Like speaking the Dark Lord's name, this game should be avoided at all costs.

It’s short too: just five hours long, with an incoherent story you won’t want to replay and no real incentives for exploring. It’s worse than the last game in almost every way. Except potions. Making potions rocks.

I'd hate to make the easy joke here, but I feel it's so apt, I can't resist: The game should be called "Harry Potter and the Half-Assed Game." Even though Endless Day mode allows you to visit the Hogwarts grounds at your leisure after the primary game finishes, letting you round up the rest of the collectibles and deal with any unfinished dueling or Potions challenges, I felt as though EA delivered only half the game I had hoped for.
50
GameSpot
The Harry Potter video games should complement the other media, providing gleeful interaction to match the excellent story from the books and the visual splendor of the films. But Half-Blood Prince isn't much fun to play once you've gotten a taste of the few simple activities. The game is ultimately a forgettable experience, pushing players through the same three minigames over and over again, without ever capturing the thrill of being a wizard. The story lacks focus and is difficult to follow, giving players only the faintest motivation to continue on before it finally ends on an emotionless, anticlimactic note. The Half-Blood Prince squanders its impressive license; you're better off reading the book again.
50
Gamestyle
Despite a decent opening it soon descends into mediocrity that so many licensed games fall into. If you’re looking for something to keep the kids entertained for a few hours (it only took us four hours to complete it) then maybe the world of Harry Potter would be enough. Chances are though there’s far better kid-centric games out there.

GameSpy
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince isn't really a bad game, but it's an awfully disappointing one. Between the occasionally spotty controls, the linear quest, and the highly repetitive mini-games, only the most dedicated Potter fans need enroll this term. Oh, and it was very disappointing to find out that the final boss battle doesn't have you playing as Professor Snape. Very disappointing.

I had high hopes for this game, especially being a fan of the books and movies but unfortunately it just didn’t come close. I found this a bore to play and felt it lacked in player participation.
