Goofy, fun and sometimes ridiculous, Just Dance is a great little game that stops short of being fantastic because of a lack of gameplay options and janky motion-sensing. It’s just not precise enough to appeal to a really competitive gamer, but then again, that’s not audience they’re going for. If you can get over the weird setlist, lack of DLC support and imperfect controls, there is a really fun party or family game in there. That is, if you like to dance, just dance.
All this is probably quite insignificant. If you've seen the TV ads and fancy the idea of dancing in front of your TV, Just Dance will let you do that and provide good fun for the whole family. It's not up to the high standard set by other music games like SingStar and Guitar Hero, but it's good enough to please wannabe dancers.
Plenty of people would rather sit on the sofa, thanks, and play a proper videogame with guns, and good for them. But small girls, show-offs and people who are too drunk to care in the first place will have a great time with Just Dance. Perhaps even games-with-guns types might enjoy it too, if they give it a try. After all, going back to Iggy Pop and car insurance, who would have thought a game where all you have to do is wave your arms about could be more popular than Modern Warfare 2?
Just Dance can be a whole lot of fun for the right audience, and that audience is sure to love it despite its very basic nature. In any event, it's at least worth renting to laugh with (at) your friends.
In a way, Just Dance is just like an up- and-coming dancer. It's very rough but shows promise, especially when played with friends. It doesn't have that many gameplay options, and the song list may make the game embarrassing to play for some. But if you put aside your inhibitions, turn off your pride, and pick up a Wii Remote you are likely to forget everything, have some fun, and do as the title says… Just Dance!
Just Dance has all the right ideas, but all the wrong mechanics. Below average graphics and a flawed rating system were the difference in this game coming more dud than hit.
Just Dance more than lives up to its title, offering little more than a collection of dance videos wrapped in a poorly presented package. As a single-player experience, it's wafer-thin, and the lack of a career mode means there's little to keep you playing for extended periods of time. If you can get a group of friends together, it becomes a fun party game as you attempt the silly dances, laugh at each other's mistakes, and sing along to the cheesy pop tunes. Just don't expect to play it again once the party's over.
Common Sense Media
Dancing to these songs is fun, but if there's no sensible scoring being done, why play the game? You might be better off simply playing the music and just dancing.
As a whole, Just Dance doesn't work out too well. The graphics may be very spartan and the sound may be fine, but the controls and the gameplay just don't cut it. It takes some time before players actually understand what is asked of them, but by that time, the novelty factor has already worn off and the game will be quickly put away in favor of something else. If you're at all curious about the game, the most you should do is rent the title, as buying it will ultimately give you a bad case of buyer's remorse.
After a decade of jumping on arrows, shaking maracas, and pointing out grooves onscreen, I think I am finally burned out on dance games. I had hopes that Just Dance might help revive my interest in the genre, but sadly it only made things worse. Just Dance just isn’t that great of a game, period.
Armchair Empire, The
I guess the final straw to be drawn with Just Dance is that every bone in my body, every part of me that enjoys not only high scores, but unlocking things, meaningful progression, and clever mechanics, wants to say this is a terrible game. So I have no choice but to give it a low score. However, if you're one of those people that likes to get together with a few friends, do something a bit silly, and you don't generally care about the things mentioned above? This might work for you. Granted, at the $40 price tag you'd probably be better off investing more money and grabbing DDR, Rock Band, or Guitar Hero for an experience that is going to last longer, and is ultimately more satisfying.
Whichever way you look at it, Just Dance is one of the most cynical bandwagon jumping game we've seen in a long while. It appears to exist for no other reason than to take advantage of the Wii's massive install base and the current popularity of music-based games while actually offering as little content as possible. I can't honestly think of anyone who'd get any sense of value from owning a copy, even if you like the idea behind it this is the worst possible implementation of that idea you can possibly imagine. Stay away.
