Mega Man is an undeniable classic, and its long-requested appearance in Virtual Console form today can mean nothing but good things in the future for fans of the retro gaming download service. At a price point of 500 Wii Points and a meager hard drive storage size of just 15 blocks, it's also well worth your consideration for immediate purchase.
The basic idea of the game is you play as Mega Man the blue shooter little robot who has to defeat Dr Wily and restore peace to the world. What stands in your way is an assortment of evil robots with such names as Bombman, Gutsman, Iceman, Cutman, Elecman and Fireman. Each level is themed around the baddies special ability predictably and when you defeat them you gain their special weapon. This adds a tactical element to the game as some stages are much tougher until you get the right combination of special weapons.

You can choose to tackle the stages in any order you please, though, and you do get a generous health bar rather than the old one-hit-kill approach. Once you grow accustomed to the unforgiving level design, you'll discover a rather nice little platform adventure full of clever ideas. Whether or not you make it that far is up to you. Be warned.

If you like a stern challenge then this is the game for you. For more casual gamers you might want to wait for Mega Man 2 to hit the Virtual Console as it offers a selection between two levels of difficulty and it is a little more balanced.
