The Next Level
Eventually, you'll master the controls and kill faster, and the entire RE:UC experience amounts to on-rails beauty. Skipping through years of Resident Evil mythos never feels rushed, for the game mostly progresses at just the right pace and makes it entirely worth experiencing. Even if you're never played (or liked) Resident Evil before, this rather different (Dead Aim and its kin aside) entry can be enjoyed by anyone with a lust for action. If you like co-op gameplay, there's yet another reason for you to try it out. There's tons to do, it's all sharply presented, and unless blood and guts makes you puke, every Wii owner should give this a go. Don't forget to change that blasted default control scheme first, though.

Everything we love about this game only gets better when you factor in its cooperative play mode; playing alone is creepier, but having a bloodthirsty buddy by your side really ratchets up the fun factor. At its heart UC is still an on-rails light-gun game, albeit one with several genre-evolving traits, so it's inherently hindered to offer an entirely fresh next-gen experience. But what it sets out to do, it achieves with near flawless execution, offering visceral, gory, balls-to-the-wall fun for any Wii owner, especially those with a love for this classic franchise. We love Nintendo's long line-up of mini-game fair, but we've been dying to get some blood on our Wii-mote-clenching hands, and, despite its minor flaws, UC nicely fills that void with its blood-soaked brand of zombie-crushing combat.

Exciting and unrelenting, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is a grand reworking of the series’ most prominent worlds.

The Umbrella Chronicles is a superb entry in the genre with a ton of great missions and reasons to play again and again. Anyone that enjoys the macabre, or going nose-to-nose with zombies should check it out. Fans will absolutely love it as it's basically a love letter from Capcom to them.

This is a surprisingly big and challenging release and not one to be overlooked as just another simplistic rail shooter. It may not be the next big release in the franchise, but Umbrella Chronicles deserves it's place right beside the other games in this venerable series.

Whether you are using the Zapper or the standard Wii remote, the game works remarkably well, allowing sharpshooters to shine, and two friends to have a blast during co-op. For fans of the series, or for people who just love shooting stuff, The Umbrella Chronicles is no-brainer.

Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles isn’t reinventing the wheel. In fact, it’s like taking a time machine back to the Bronze Age. But it’s still pretty fun and downright addictive if you have a lightgun game fetish.

Digital Spy
As with all games of this nature, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is repetitive. The game is also short-lived, but while it lasts there’s no denying it offers a great, fun-filled experience. This coupled with an excellent two-player co-operative mode will see the title snapped up by all fans of the franchise and those looking for a classic zombie shoot-em-up.

Umbrella Chronicles does a solid job. It takes repetitive rails-shooting gameplay and retreads a lot of arguably worn locations and Resident Evil territory, but it never feels stale. In fact, a degree of knowledge about the previous games not only helps the choppy storytelling to gel a little better, it also gives you a tactical advantage. You'll have a good idea of what key enemies you're going to encounter (and thus, when to save your grenades or heavy munitions), and secrets to keep an eye out for. In this way, Resident Evil fans are definitely encouraged to try their hand at Umbrella Chronicles. It comes close to greatness and definitely rounds out the much-needed hardcore gaming category on the Wii.

Umbrella Chronicles is a must-purchase for Wii owners. While it isn't a killer app on the level of Mario Galaxy, it's probably the best multiplayer game on the system. People with friends, or fans of zombies, action games, or breathing, will get a kick out of the simple and entertaining act of mowing down loads of lumbering corpses. Chock full of bad acting, cheesy writing, and hilariously stupid zombie types (sharks!), Umbrella Chronicles clearly doesn't take itself too seriously. This best-of Resident Evil collection is a tip of the hat to all of the fans of the series that own a Wii, and it could well make some converts out of the uninitiated. Don't expect a revolution, but expect a good time. Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles is right on target.

IGN
At the same time, there’s no denying the fun we had playing the game, and any Resident Evil fan out there will undoubtedly feel the same way after a few hours of Umbrella Chronicles. It lacks polish, and it may have some annoying gameplay quirks that keep it from being a “great” game by definition, but as a tribute to the Resident Evil franchise, and a fun in-between game that works well in short bursts, UC delivers. There’s a huge variety of RE-inspired levels to blow through, over 20 hours of play (gigantic for a light gun game), nearly a dozen weapons to find and upgrade, and a pretty ambitious amount of scripted cut scenes and classically bad Resident Evil voiceover work. It’s far from perfect, but it’s an entertaining addition to the RE “gun survivor” genre, and it simply boils over with fan service.

Tasting half an hour of the hard action that The Umbrella Chronicles puts on your plate is the ideal way to forget a hard day at work or school. UC may be a cloth to stop the bleeding, it's silky soft, ultra sterile and has become a super cloth printed with hot chicks. For as along as it takes at least.

This concept had a lot of potential to be a great Wii experience. I love the old RE games, and UC offers gamers the chance to play through those early titles from a whole new perspective—a first person, on-rails shooter. The game was also billed as one of the first big titles to fully support the Wii Zapper. Unfortunately, both the Wii Zapper and UC in general disappoint to a degree. The first three RE games on Playstation were all about fighting through a constant, ominous feeling that something was going to randomly bust through a door and kick your ass. UC certainly features a lot of enemies, but that sense of fear is almost completely lost with the new perspective.

While Umbrella Chronicles doesn't accomplish much of note besides solidifying the Resident Evil story thus far, it provides plenty of point-and-pull-the-trigger satisfaction for your buck (especially with a friend in tow). It offers the welcome accessibility of the Wii amidst a more thematically mature setting, providing an enjoyably casual trip through a slice of gaming history. Series fans will devour it as an excuse to flesh out the Resident Evil canon, but there's enough casual slaughter of the undead for anyone to enjoy.

Like this review, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles is very short. Like VERY short. I finished the whole thing, beginning to end, in an afternoon and there is little replay value, aside from just playing the levels you enjoy over and over. You probably won’t do too much of that, though, because for Resident Evil vets, you’ll have already been through these scenarios AT LEAST twice. So, short game, short review. Even though Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles provides some fast-paced shooting action, there are way, way too many games coming out that are infinitely better and more interesting… and those are full of new content, new stories that people haven’t already played multiple times before. Umbrella Chronicles is a niche title and a great way to show off the new Wii Zapper, but most people would be best suited with renting it or waiting until it is in the bargain bin.

As a Resident Evil game, Umbrella Chronicles may turn off some fans, especially those that prefer the survival horror aspect of the series. But since Resident Evil 4 blew up the survival horror aspects of its predecessors with the game's own rocket launcher and let you mow down several hundred enemies without a real care, this argument really doesn’t stand up anymore. Basically, if you enjoy the franchise and want to get more out of its convoluted story, you should really look into the game (particularly if you have a friend around). It has its faults, but they can be overlooked for mindless zombie shooting fun.

GameSpot
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is solid for an on-rails shooter, a genre that admittedly becomes less relevant with each passing year, and the strength of the ambiance, the quantity of Resident Evil detail, and some fun little gameplay touches make it better. If you don't care for either Resident Evil or light-gun games, this won't change your mind, but if you do, it's a pretty fun ride.

GameSpy
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is a solid and entertaining shooting adventure with a lot to offer fans of the franchise. Fast-paced action and a great presentation are hampered only by the steep learning curve for what should be a simple point-and-shoot experience. Still, the game's worth checking out and should tide fans over until we get our Resident Evil-themed The Typing of the Dead spinoff.

Worth Playing
Gamers have been waiting awhile for a rail shooter for the Wii, especially with Nintendo's announcement of the Wii Zapper add-on, and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles delivers, but it doesn't go beyond simple competence. Umbrella Chronicles is a completely average rail shooter, made distinguishable from House of the Dead only by the addition of the Resident Evil license. While Umbrella Chronicles is certainly fun to play, especially with a friend, its short length, incoherent plot and low replay value mean that only the most die-hard of Resident Evil fans will care enough to spend the time to unlock every file in the game. Anyone who can't tell a Hunter from a Chimera might just want to give Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles a rental instead.

Still, Umbrella Chronicles is pretty much a necessity for the RE aficionado, as the files give a great deal of story elements, plus it's nice to see what the heck happened in between RE3 and RE4. For people who just want to shoot stuff with the Wii, know that this really is a Resident Evil game adapted to be in first-person with light-gun action.

Eurogamer.net (UK)
Needless to say, Umbrella Chronicles isn't the most long-lasting affair, and in absolute gameplay terms it's probably one of the most wafer thin offerings you'll have experienced for years. But in a landscape dominated by epic, sprawling complexity, it's refreshing now and then to kick back and blast away in a game that's as knowingly brain-dead as this. The Resident Evil fans will lap it up, and those of you that fancy a good old fashioned arcade-style zombie blaster can't go wrong. Admittedly it's not everything it could have been, but taken at face value Umbrella Chronicles is a huge amount of fun while it lasts. Having taken a few left turns over the years with the various Gun Survivor titles, it's good to see Capcom come up with an on-rails game which does everything it should.

If you enjoy the occasional rail shooter or are a casual RE fan, then this title is an ideal rental. The lack of overall polish on menus, graphics, and presentation prevents this from being a purchase, but if you’re a hardcore fan of the series, then you could do a lot worse than this title. At least pick it up used so you can be thrifty while you’re trying to unlock all the secrets of the evil Umbrella Corporation, because, after all, the truth is out there.

Though the game isn't amazing, it's still a pretty good time for those players looking for a lightgun game to have on their Wii. Resident Evil fans will get the most from their time with the game, but if all you want to do is hold a weapon in your hand and blow holes in zombies, you should fulfill your desire for zombie killing with Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles.

EL33TONLINE
The single player mode is exceptionally difficult, you actually require a friend to play this on co-op and easy is in fact NOT easy. Unfortunately those two combinations really spoil the game as a long but difficult game is going to leave some never seeing all the greatness in the story that is Resident Evil. Although there is some nice scenery along the way, Chronicles is a journey you’ll be happy to take on just once, then pass it on. If you’re not the kind of person that handles challenges by yourself very well take a “rain check” and stick your “Umbrella” back in the cupboard.

I would feel much better about this game if the difficulty were not cranked up to far beyond an arcade shooter, or if the game were a little more forgiving with regards to accuracy. Still, it wouldn't be a Resident Evil game if there weren't some ridiculously obvious flaws that make the game excessively frustrating to newcomers. For everything that Umbrella Chronicles borrows from the more recent games in the series, it takes a heaping helping from the old in the sarcastic name of "balance". Honestly, there are good ways to do a rail shooter on the Wii; this is a poor start, but at least it, like Umbrella itself, will serve as a shining example of what not to do.

The Video Game Critic
Unlike Sega's House of the Dead games which offer fast, arcade-style carnage, Chronicles tends to be slow going, and the action is constantly interrupted by load screens, dull cut-scenes, and checkpoints. Dying often forces you to repeat a large chunk of the game. Even the two-player simultaneous mode is lousy. I like the idea of both players sharing a health meter, but it's really easy to get those crosshairs mixed up considering they're both glowing red half of the time! The Umbrella Chronicles should have been a joyride of a game, but it didn't take long for me to grow weary of this.
