It should go without saying that if you're not a Tetris fan, there won't be anything here that will change your opinion. It's still very much Tetris despite all the bells and whistles. But if you dream of falling blocks, the the huge number of gameplay modes and fantastically addictive online play makes this an essential purchase. The price is slightly inflated, but considering how it feels like so many completely different games in one we have no complaints.

If you own a Wii, you need to own Tetris Party just like how everyone owns Wii Sports. Yes, this is still Tetris, the same game we have been playing for over 20 years, but this download is such a complete package, it could very well retail as a boxed title for double the amount of the money it costs to download it. It is unfortunate that the online mode is limited to two players, and the overall presentation will not make you jump out of your seat, but the new content is highly entertaining. Download now !

Tetris Party isn't a perfect game, but it is yet another must-have WiiWare title. For 1200 points and 244 blocks of Wii space, players can sink their teeth into a download that feels more like a packaged game, and less like WiiWare, with over a half dozen new modes to play, leaderboards for all of it, online battle, and a whole slew of options. If this were a $19.99 boxed title (or even a $29.99 one), we'd be recommending it, but mentioning that it's be a heck of a steal to get it on WiiWare. With that already being the case, gamers now have a package that's worth nearly double its price, and one that rivals things like World of Goo for your download space, cash, and attention. If you're a fan of traditional Tetris, this is the best console version we've seen in years. It's a must-own WiiWare game.

Is Tetris Party fun, though? Well, it depends how much you like a challenge. For people like myself whose most notable mental strain is dealing with the general public, it’s a welcome break to be thoroughly tested. The problem is picking it up first, because it does sound like, and is, hard work playing against human opponents. Many won’t like having to put the hours in to nail down a good strategy and have a chance of putting themselves on the leader-board and as such Tetris Party is only likely to be played by those who know what’s involved. Or, such as myself, who like taking small steps back to when gaming was a test of skill and patience for the gamer and not a trial for programmers to see who can get the best graphics out of the hardware.

Tetris Party supports Wi-Fi, but only for straight-up Tetris dogfights for up to six players, so it’s in local multiplayer that it shines. At its best, it’s as the name suggests – a veritable Tetris Party. But if you’re the only person you’re inviting, you might prefer to dig up an older portable version instead.

If you're Tetris-starved and have no other means to play the game than on your Wii, you can hardly go wrong with Tetris Party. Yet, as the name implies, the game is specifically meant for local multi-play. Playing against friends is incredible fun and for this we can recommend the game wholeheartedly, but if you're not able to round up anyone you might think twice before a purchase. Yes, the basic single-player is as rock solid as it’s ever been, but as far as the other modes go, there is only so much fun you can gain out of playing against AI opponents. The online side of things is excellent, and the developer has clearly invested a large amount of time in making sure the interface is easy to use, but the lack of play modes is a shame. Still, outside of Tetris DS this is the most robust online Tetris experience money can buy, and if you're in the position of being able to rope in a group of friends for some local multiplayer, then Tetris Party comes highly recommended.

The best part of Tetris Party is the huge variety in game modes. There are over a dozen, and many of them are brand new. It's very similar to Tetris DS in this respect. Particularly cool was the climber mode, where you race against other players to make a staircase for a little man to climb up to the top of the screen. I even dusted off the Wii Balance Board for Balance Board Tetris. Its a simpler, slower version of Tetris, with some smaller pieces mixed in. I found it to be hard on my back, but amusing. I could see this mode in particular being a big hit at a party.
