There's nothing to worry about here unless the shooting game bothers you (it's like a carnival and there's no blood). The games are shallow and simple, which makes them perfect for kids 5-and up. For social gamers and families, this is a must have game for your Wii console.

As for Wii Play, the game seems designed to familiarize players with the bizarre new controller, and it certainly does just that, easing them into the many ways it can be used. That said, the game is complemented perfectly by the Wii Remote (sans Nunchuk) it comes included with. Though one would certainly be hard pressed to claim Wii Play is a game worthy of a $50 price tag on its own, it could certainly be argued that, with a standalone Wii Remote being priced at $39.99 and Wii Play selling for $49.99, one is actually saving a bit of money and that the game is perfect for anyone looking to add another controller (not to mention a fairly decent game) to their collection. Unfortunately, as the saying goes, opinions are like...well, you know, and everyone’s got one. But, fortunately for Wii Play, this is one opinion that I certainly hold myself.

Like I said, this is basically a series of tech demos consisting of ten mini games that showcase a lot of the possibilities that the Wii and Wii remote are capable of doing. This is not a deep experience by any stretch of the imagination. Even the multiplayer can't really extend your playing time that much more. You can breeze through the entire series of mini games in about an hour. They vary from a Ping Pong rally to a target practice mini game to an updated clone of the Atari classic Combat and others in between. The gist of this being that there's not much of a game here, but if you're looking to show someone what the Wii is all about Wii Play is a great choice. The mini games are short bursts of fun wrapped in a package that shouldn't make you entirely regret your purchase. If you're still having trouble finding the Wii remote where you live then this should be an easy decision.

Whether you pick up a copy of Wii Play or not boils down to this, pretty much: do you want to spend an extra fiver when you purchase that second remote and get a double fistful of fairly basic mini-games thrown into the bargain? Well, in a nutshell, our largely apathetic answer is that you might as well. You see, it's difficult to review Wii Play in the traditional sense, given that what you're effectively getting bundled with your remote is an elaborate interactive tutorial, designed to familiarise the technically inept with the Wii's pointing functionality.

Still, you won't spend more than a few hours with Wii Play, especially since multi-player is for two people at most. There are better mini-game collections already out, such as Rayman and the packaged Wii Sports. Even more are coming in the future, like Wario Ware, for example. Still, Wii Play is well worth it's $10 price, though probably not much more. I think it would be awesome if Nintendo released another package like this (maybe with Wario Ware?) for when I buy a third Wiimote.

You should only really consider this if you would like an extra controller. If you already have four you do not really need this. The mini-games can be fun but if you can hold out for Wario Ware or Mario Party there will be a lot more than nine mini games to interest you. If you are getting a controller anyway £5 is not a lot to spend for a game to add to your collection.

Wii Play, yeah it’s a great game for a good few hours of 2 player multiplayer fun, and you’ll find yourself trying to get those elusive platinum medals when you’re playing by yourself. The inclusion of an additional controller makes it all that more viable to buy to add to your collection.

Wii Play is definitely a good means of making sure players from less experienced backgrounds get to get used to various game types and control system before they're unleashed into the wider world. The likes of Billiards, Shooting Gallery and Laser Hockey have the sort of Everyman appeal that Nintendo is right to place front and centre in an introductory budget release like this. On the other hand, the very fact that Wii Play is so deliberately basic by design means that it's a compilation that only scratches the surface of the types of games we're likely to see designed to exploit the Wii remote. Wii Play has a few timeless gems that should prove to be party favourites this Christmas, but regular gamer, in particular, shouldn't expect the novelty value to endure much beyond that. Think of this as commercial tutorial.

The bottom line is that Wii Play is a lot like Wii Sports. On one hand it's very simple and addictive for non-gamers, but on the other hand it's more of a novelty for core gamers. The price is high, although the "free" controller makes it more than worthwhile if you're looking for a second controller and a cheap set of mini-games that are fun for a few hours. I can't really see Wii Play winning any awards or achieving greatness, but what is does well, it does really well. Just don't expect to be playing this one a few months from now -- unless there's beer and chicks involved.

There are a number of minigame collections available for the Wii, and Wii Play stands out in only one respect: the fact that a remote is included for the same price as most other new games. If you’re a party game fan or you have a family to keep entertained, this title may be worth the $10 premium over the cost of a separate controller if you don’t have a full set yet. If you’ve already tracked down four remotes, you might as well leave this game on the shelf; you’ll get at least as much enjoyment out of the game that came with the console.

Wii Play is a fun, though incredibly basic collection of mini-games. In truth, the compilation feels more like a tech demo than anything else, which is disappointing considering its price point. Normally, we don’t consider the price of a game a factor in our reviews. Occasionally, however, the subject is of importance, and this is one of those cases. If Wii Play was available for ten bucks, we could much more easily recommend it. Table Tennis, Laser Hockey, Billiards and even Find Mii are all fairly fun mini-games. But they aren’t worth $50. Casuals are far more likely to be enticed and thus drawn-in by Wii Play than any other audience. Hardcore gamers, on the other hand, can spend their gaming dollar on better Wii software and be more satisfied.

IGN
As a standalone game, there is no way I could recommend Wii Play. It is simply not worth $50 or, for that matter, even half that. But it's a $10 companion piece to a Wii remote and it does succeed as a technical demo of what Nintendo's new peripheral can do. There are nine minis included in the package and about half of them are worth your attention, even with some flaws. Mii Find and Mii Pose probably won't light any fires; Shooting Range is a sad excuse for Duck Hunt; and Charge! is over about a minute after it begins. But consider that you're spending nearly $10 for some of today's Virtual Console titles. Wii Play gives you a solid four minis – Table Tennis, Laser Hockey, Billiards and, most of all, Tanks! – for roughly the same price, and these titles have all been designed with the Wii remote in mind. They also support two-player competitions.

GameSpot
It's not all bad, but Wii Play doesn't hold up as a stand-alone retail game. Nintendo seems to be aware of that, because the only way you can get Wii Play in North America as of this writing is as a pack-in with a Wii Remote. The continued scarcity of the Wii Remote, and the fact that the Wii Play package is retailing for only $10 more than a remote by itself, makes the game's shortcomings easier to overlook. Regardless of price, Wii Play probably isn't going to hold your attention for long.

There is some enjoyment to be had with Wii Play, but the fun is fleeting. The most compelling aspect of this package is the free controller included with it.

But, all of this is beside the point. The game comes with a Wiimote. Around the world, gamers, mothers, buddies, girlfriends, and boyfriends have been scouring the stores trying to find the damnedable controllers. The remote is $39.99 and from Nintendo. The Wii Play game is $49.99. It wouldn’t matter if the game was “Nazi War Camp Commandant,” as long as it has that remote in the box, it’s going to sell out.

Reviewing Wii Play was never going to be a simple task, and by ordinary standards there's simply nothing here - bar Billiards - that offers anything worthy of more than a few minutes play. As an introduction to the Wii and its unique control scheme it just about works, but beyond that there's very little here to get excited about. Because it comes bundled with a Wii remote it's not a bad package, and certainly worth picking up if you're after a second controller.

If you needed an excuse to pick up another Wii Remote and you have an extra Hamilton in the wallet, then by all means pick up Wii Play. Just don't expect to fully get your money's worth.

More mini games, another $50 and no online play, why? Nintendo really must hate online play, but last week they released another online game so maybe things will change. Wii Play on the other hand is pretty much worthless, Wii Mote's are every where now so don't pick this up. Buy the Wii Mote and play Wii Sports with a friend or a family member. You may be lucky enough to see Wii Play, without the Wii Mote, for $10 used but that is still too much. I really could live without of this and I would trade it in, but nobody will give me more than $5. Oh well at least I got that extra Wii Mote, did have some fun playing Wii Sports with another person.
