There is no other title on the market that can give you such a sense of what these men went through. That’s the highest commendation I can give a simulation. My hat is off to the team at Empire Interactive. This is a great game.
Success in 101 requires luck, good squad organization, team tactics, and proper utilization of terrain. 101 simulates the chaos of an airborne drop very well, and the level of detail is tremendous. The manual explains everything, but learning the game can be done through experience only (a training ground is available). Everything is explained: how many APs each action requires, the statistics behind the weapons, and how much each individual item - right down to the entrenching tools and K-rations - will encumber the soldier. Throw in multiplayer games (the only way you can play the Germans) and this is quite a game. There's also no way to make new campaigns, but the results can be so random during a campaign that this won't be too much of a hindrance. While the scope is limited and the level of detail can intimidate some, 101: The Airborne Invasion of Normandy is a winner.

In a year when wargames have been few upon the ground indeed, 101 is a very pleasant surprise. It's fun, historically accurate, and takes for its subject a very hot topic. With a little faster gameplay and a lot more marketing (didn't anyone think of tying this in with the movie or a book?), this game could be a big hit.

If you've got the patience, 101 is a very rewarding game, although the chronic slowness and occasional line-of-sight problems do hold it back from getting a much higher score.
Having got the gripes out of the way, I want to restate that this game is extremely good. The big engagements, which are the real meat of the campaigns, are a lot of fun and since the locations of the Germans in the surrounding countryside are random, the game never plays exactly the same way twice. If you liked Soldiers at War, and could do without that game's cartoonier aspects, this is your game. If you liked the squad battles of Close Combat and don't need the hectic pace of real time to keep your attention, this is your game. If you've been hoping and praying for a computer release of Advanced Squad Leader...um...this isn't it, but it is a pretty solid step in the right direction.

If you're not a diehard wargamer, this game is most likely going to be way too slow and tedious for you. If you are, hmm, set aside a full day or so and have at it. I bet you'll either be addicted or be trading it in for Panzer General II or something that moves a little faster. As a wargame, it's not pretty, but it's realistic and detailed. As a plain game, you'll find higher entertainment value elsewhere.

101st Airborne in Normandy is a great concept that suffers from a few implementation flaws. While I’m sort of “grey” on the game, I think most people will find themselves at one end of the spectrum or the other. Some folks may love the ability to customize sticks and sneak through the countryside toward their objective, while others may find themselves wondering when the action is going to start. 101st Airborne has its good points and bad points and its true worth lies somewhere in the middle.

101 simply doesn’t operate well as a game. For me, there’s nothing worse than having to constantly reload a saved game to overcome some random occurrence that makes victory impossible. Yet 101 is riddled with such situations. When you leave England (after spending a fair amount of time selecting and outfitting your men) you run the risk of having your transport shot down before you can drop. Game over. If you survive the flak, each soldier that jumps runs the risk of being shot on the way down, blown off course and lost, or injured upon landing. It’s not unusual to lose up to half your men before the game even starts. I once started with a surviving 5 out of 18. Game over. Again, this might be realistic, but it makes for a lousy game— especially with the incredible number of technical flaws that you are subjected to. Take a flier on this one.
