Description

"Tenrinougenmu" is one of the games based on the animé and manga series 3x3 Eyes. The animé and the game tell the story of Yakumo, a normal Japanese teenager who studies and works as a waiter, and Pai, a girl who belongs to the race of Sanjiyan, the immortal three-eyed people. After discovering the secret of eternal youth and immortality many hundred years ago, the Sanjiyan could not remain human, and became cruel demons who can possess people and turn them into Wu (Chinese for "nothing"), immortal, powerful, and obedient servants. Pai, who looks like a young girl, but is nevertheless three hundred years old, was terrified by what the Sanjiyan have become, and swore she will find a way to become human again. She meets Yakumo, whose late father was a scientist who helped Pai on her quest. Accidentally, Pai uses the powers of her third eye on Yakumo, and he becomes her Wu! Trying to regain their lost humanity, Yakumo and Pai are confronted by the evil Benares, the Wu of Sanjiyan ruler. In pursuit of Benares and his henchmen, Yakumo and Pai travel to India, to the Easter Island, and to many other countries. Will they be able to stop Benares and to become human again?

This is an adventure in Japanese fashion, which plays like an interactive animé. The 3 CDs on which the game comes are full of animé cut scenes, and the locations of the game are still shots in animé style. Unlike most Japanese adventures, you interact with the game world not by choosing commands from a menu, but by scrolling with a cursor on the screen. Once the cursor is placed on an object you can interact with, it is highlighted with an additional command, such as "look", "talk", etc. There are no real puzzles in the game, but the cursor-based gameplay makes it a bit similar to Western point-and-click adventures.

Trivia

The game comes with an extra CD in small format, with the song entitled Raks-ati: Kimi o Mamoru. "Kimi o mamoru" means "I'll protect you", and that is also probably the meaning of "raks-ati" in Sanskrit. There are four other Sanskrit words mentioned in the manual on the same page as the song's lyrics, together with their Japanese translation: jivavah (the two of us live), bodhami (I wake up), raksavah (the two of us protect), and smarami (I recall).
