8-Bit Commando is a run-and-gun platformer in the style of games from the 8 and 16-bit era. You take the role of an unnamed commando who is sent to a hostile nation on the verge of developing nuclear powers. The commando must complete a total six different missions from infiltrating a nuclear facility to stopping a shipment of nuclear material and even fighting off terrorists.

There are continuation points throughout each level and the player has unlimited continues however each mission must be completed within five minutes. After the five minutes are over the player must start from the beginning of the level. Upon completing each mission the player can enter his name and it is submitted to a global online high score.

Different weapon power-ups are found throughout the game. In addition to the regular machine gun which the commando starts off with, there is also laser, homing rockets, flamethrower, spread gun, grenades and a fast machine gun. Gameplay is similar to Contra, where you run, jump and shoot in eight directions. The game has a local co-op mode.
