A Game of Thrones: Genesis for deg.

An in-depth and innovative espionage system provides some clever ways to stick it to your rivals early-on, but micromanaging all of the game's diplomatic complexities grows cumbersome as encounters progress. A Game of Thrones: Genesis's sluggish campaign further suffers from poor pacing, and the end game almost always devolves into ham-fisted warfare punctuated by dull combat – one of its weakest facets.

George R.R. Martin wrote in his fantasy novel A Game of Thrones, "Most men would rather deny a hard truth than face it." It is unfortunate that fans of that author's A Song of Ice and Fire series must face one such truth: A Game of Thrones: Genesis is as mediocre as real-time strategy games come. That a budget-priced licensed game didn't turn out to be great isn't surprising; what makes Genesis so disappointing is that it had the potential to be great. In AI skirmishes and online, the spotlight isn't on combat but on capturing villages and fooling your opponent with subterfuge and quiet assassinations. Many strategy games allow for stealthy tactics, but few demand them, which makes this one unique from a conceptual standpoint. Every so often, Genesis' more unusual mechanics shine. However, they all too often wither under the blazing boredom of the single-player campaign and are flattened by a shortage of automation features that could have made one-off matches fun, rather than labor.

So: come not for the enticing Game of Thrones name, certainly not for the ugly graphics, clunky interface (as appears to be Cyanide's habit of late) and soulless writing, but instead, perhaps, for what genuinely is an ambitious new take on real-time strategising. With verve and wit and gloss, Genesis could have been the start of something fascinatingly, enthrallingly cruel: as it is, it's a song of needless branding and sad compromise.

Perhaps this is why most RTS games rely on constant action. Much of Genesis' desert dry tedium would evaporate if it was just a turn-based title. You wouldn't have to spend what feels like an eternity manually sending units to check on every little thing. As is, though, this Game of Thrones feels more like a game of musical chairs set to elevator music: slow, devoid of charm, and utterly lacking in payoff. It certainly packs a few neat tricks – what other game treats siring bastard sons as a legitimate strategy? – but largely, you just repeat the same snooze-inducing actions over and over again. Do yourself a favor and leave this clash of kings to the crows.

There are too many strategy games out right now to warrant giving A Game of Thrones: Genesis a try. With games out there like Starcraft 2, Civilization V, and Total War: Shogun 2 it just isn’t viable to play Genesis when it feels stale and unfinished. Even for fans of the books or show it just isn’t a good enough game, even in the fan service perspective, to go out and spend $40 on. Do yourself a favor and read the books, then go play a better strategy game.
