So who should play Age of Empires Online? That’s easy, everyone should. It’s free, what do you have to lose from trying it out? Is it worth it to invest in the premium content, which adds more content and features creating a more in-depth experience? I personally believe so, especially if you enjoy strategy games. If you’re coming off of a traditional MMO like City of Heroes, Lord of the Rings Online, or World of Warcraft, I wouldn’t come to AoEO expecting a similar experience because it’s not. Strategy is the entree and MMO are the sides here. I’ve enjoyed the dozens of hours I’ve put into the game, the biggest question is if it would hold up for dozens of hours more, and my answer to that is I’ll unlikely play in any long-term sense, it just hasn’t held my interest enough to encourage me to do so.

Age of Empires Online besitzt ein grundsolies Fundament.

Age of Empires, great as it was, doesn't quite stand up against the best in the RTS genre today - and Age of Empires Online doesn't improve on its mighty predecessors in any meaningful way in-game, while adding a lot of bumf around it of questionable value. It's still a grand name, of course, and in some ways a grand game - one trumpeted as 'Microsoft's triumphant return to the RTS genre!' So let's put it this way: it's certainly a return.

Age of Empires Online will es allen Recht machen. Potenzial: gewaltig. Ausführung momentan: gehobener Durchschnitt.
For all its flaws, I can’t help but like Age of Empires Online. Caught somewhere between massively-multiplayer online role-playing game and hardcore competitive real-time strategy, Age of Empires Online delivers some of the most addictive parts of both. Some sloppy mechanics and balance and reward issues detract from the core Age of Empires experience, but not to the point that it's not worth playing. It's definitely worth trying the free experience, because if you like that, the premium packs just make everything better.
Thankfully, the free part of AOE Online has me whole heartedly recommending a download. It does what it sets out to do – combine elements of RTS and RPG. The MMO portion is thin and there is really no reason to interact with the huddled masses. However, if you can get a few friends to clear some disc space then you might have some great co-op and player vs. player sessions that rival the AOE and AOE II days of yore. I will continue to patch the game and periodically jump in to see if fixes have been made. AOE Online is a work in progress more than a finished product. All the parts are in place though for a great game.
Even if you refuse to part with any money while playing it, Age of Empires Online does a lot of different things reasonably well and is definitely better than the sum of its parts. It'd be even better if it didn't so clearly have a few parts missing. There's no easy way to trade items with other players, for example, because there's no auction house equivalent, and the dedicated trade channel doesn't let you include links of items that you want to sell. (If you try to link one, you get a message telling you that "Item links are only allowed in the trade channel.") There's also no Skirmish mode in which to test multiplayer strategies against the AI; it won't be available until it's released as a premium booster pack sometime this upcoming holiday season. It has been said that the best things in life are free, but that's clearly not the case with Age of Empires Online.
