Computer Gaming World (CGW)
When you balance the irritations versus the number of options in the game – changing the Confederate capital, modifying slavery status, the scenario editor – it's hard to go wrong with this game. Provided, that is, that you accept AMERICAN CIVIL WAR for what it is: the best strategic-level game on the entire War Between the States. I'd like to think that, tom as he was between North and South, my great-great uncle would agree that this game does justice to both sides of the conflict – and to all the brave souls who fought in it
Computer Games Magazine
While the wide range of options and decisions are initially daunting, the point and click interface is very user friendly. The game does an admirable job of recreating the nature of the American Civil War: there is a clear ebb and flow to the military situation, the supply problem is critical for the South, and battles often result in the victor suffering horrible losses. I found several bugs, though none significantly affected game play, and the AI will never take the place of a crafty human opponent (playing as the Confederates, fighting a desperate campaign in northern Virginia, I was able to sneak a division into Pennsylvania and capture the capital!). This is not a game for those who need to see animated cannons firing and little cavalry horses running down a hill. However, if you have any interest in simulating the strategic aspects of the War Between The States, or if you have a historical interest in that conflict, American Civil War deserves a place on your hard drive.
The Civil War was the bloodiest conflict in American history—brother against brother, North against South. As the war continues to be recreated on computers around the world, one game that stands out among the rest in the genre is Interactive Magic's American Civil War. It pulls you out of the trenches and puts you in the chair of the Commander-in-Chief. If you prefer the “big picture” approach to military simulations, American Civil War is hard to beat.
PC Player (Denmark)
