Anna is unarguably hampered by poor software engineering, lacklustre design, and an unintuitive user interface, but as an experience it is challenging, experimental, artistic, and above all: new. I have not been as surprised by a game in a long time and it is this feeling of curiosity and intrigue that keeps me playing it. If you are looking for triple-A production values and infinite replayability, or if you’re an English major and easily annoyed by subpar writing, you will definitely want to look somewhere else. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a new experience, something that tests your resolve and irritates you immensely before giving you the satisfaction of a puzzle solved, you will definitely want to check this game out. It is not for everyone, but those for whom it is will undoubtedly love it.

Despite its failings, I’m inclined to look favourably on Anna. It’s not a great adventure game, and its problems with that side of things occasionally make maintaining its horror atmosphere tricky. Indeed, at times its unevenness makes it feel a little like a trial game, but one that showcases potential for far greater things in future. On the other hand, its low asking price, decent atmosphere, and a number of nice little touches mean I’d certainly recommend it to horror buffs who’ve been intrigued by what they’ve heard, and its short runtime (about three hours for a first playthrough) means the puzzles won’t have too long to infuriate you. Anna won’t blow you away, but it’s worth checking out just for what it gets right.

Anna manages to create a few blood-chilling moments throughout its story, but most of the fear factor is neutered after you realize nothing can harm you. Alongside its sub-par interface and relative lack of polish it becomes harder and harder to find admirable qualities in Anna. What’s here boils down to a relatively mediocre adventure game that’s far more frustrating than it is frightening.

The idea: a horror game that reacts to your presence within the world. Anna knows what you're thinking, so goes the marketing blurb, and she'll use that against you. The reality: a first-person point-and-click adventure that relies on infuriating genre tropes. You'll spend most of your time crawling around dilapidated rooms, searching for an object you might be able to arbitrarily combine with another, in the hope that you'll manage to trigger the next spooky set-piece.

Offering a final verdict on Anna is hard. On the positive side, the game delivers an adult experience that attempts to provide a deep, emotional experience. On the negative side, it is a flawed experience as a game that is both frustrating and disappointing. That being said, I am interested in seeing more work from Dreampainter—and soon; my dreams can always use new material.

There’s some real scares to be found, but illogical puzzles and a confusing plot make Anna a different kind of horror to play.

In the end, as much as I want to like Anna for being a horror point-and-click, with such extensive translation issues, I can't in good conscious recommend it to anyone. It has a few good scares and some startling imagery, but otherwise just can't deliver the well-crafted intrigue of its peers.
