Apache Air Assault

Activision Value’s new Apache AH-64 Air Assault combat-helicopter title is a slap to the face of budget-game naysayers. Although at first glance Apache appears to be little more than an unsophisticated aerial shooter — a characterization reinforced by its comic-book title, gaudy box artwork, and $20 price tag — it punches through to deliver an entertaining chopper game.

Budget titles are a risky proposition for gamers. They have to wonder why a particular game debuts at a low price. Maybe it's behind the times in the graphics department, or suffers from simple gameplay or some other compromise that's necessary to justify the low retail cost. But sometimes a budget title is a standout example of a game done right and delivered to the users at a reasonable price. Apache AH-64 Air Assault isn't one of those standout examples, but on the spectrum of budget titles, it sits closer to that upper register than to the dregs that populate the other end.

Nie powiem, po Apache Air Assault oczekiwałem jednak czegoś innego, czegoś więcej. Bien que proposé à bas prix, Operation Air Assault a très peu d'intérêt face à un Comanche 4 qui lui est bien supérieur en tout point. Surtout qu'on le trouve lui aussi à petit prix sur le marché de l'occasion et même en neuf. Intrinsèquement, le jeu d'Interactive Vision est bien trop lacunaire pour tenir la comparaison. Les graphismes ne sont pas à la hauteur, la jouabilité se révèle peu précise et l'intérêt est limité à cause des objectifs très répétitifs.

Apache AH-64 Air Assault is a 3D chopper shooter developed by InterActive Vision (these guys created games such as Search And Rescue 4, Vietnam Med Evac, Beyond Pearl Harbor: Pacific Warriors and Worlds Of Billy 2). In the game you get to sit in the cockpit of the AH-64 Apache combat helicopter and do battle with enemy units both in the air and on the ground.
