Army Men II

Army Men II is an enjoyable game if the minor offensive bits don?t bother you, and if you can live with unstable multiplayer. This is in the bargain bins now at $10. I would recommend this to anyone who wants some fun with toy army men.

Army Men 2 maakt de tekortkomingen van deel 1 meer dan goed. het is nu een aparte, originele arcade wargame geworden in grappige omgevingen. Toch zou een echte 3D versie van dit spel met een 3D shooter- of Tomb Raider aangezicht pas echt de pure shit zijn! Ideetje, meneren bij 3DO?

Army Men II is a very worthy addition to the series. It's more than just new missions, the inclusion of real world scenarios makes the game much more innovative. The new interface is nice, but still needs some tweaking, especially where pathfinding is involved. The storyline is interesting, and the game is left wide open for another sequel. Bottom Line: Not your typical real time strategy game, Army Men II is a worthy sequel to its innovative predecessor. A new interface is much easier to use, but has problems when it comes to pathfinding. The new weapons are a nice addition, as are the new powerups. The most welcome addition is the inclusion of a good save game mechanism.

Sarge is back in 3DO's latest installment of Army Men. New levels and new weapons are at your disposal as you rally your greens to o battle with the evil tans. Magical portals into other worlds smear the boundaries between what is real and what is plastic. Conspirators from the Blue and the Gray armies will aid you at times and kill you at another time.

Начну, согласно названию, издалека. Знаете, существуют такие субъекты с нарушенной психикой, которым категорически противопоказано наблюдать насилие. В кино ли, в игре ли — неважно. Именно поэтому в некоторых игрушках добавляют специальные функции, отключающие кровь, непристойности и прочее. В АМ2 ничего этого нет. Игрок заранее знает, что все это — игра. Солдатики игрушечные, вместо крови — пластмасса. Никакого давления на психику.

The original Army Men underwent a pretty dramatic change during development and ended up being more of an action game than the real-time strategy title it started as. While the game had its highlights, it was not without problems; still, it managed to secure a fairly loyal following. Army Men 2 attempts to build on the successes of its predecessor while addressing some of the shortcomings. The result is a more varied title that at times shows flashes of real creativity, but doesn't solve all the problems.

Die Grafik erregt Mitleid, die Abwechslung hält sich in Grenzen. Doch wer nicht nur auf lange Feature-Listen und Effektorgien spechtet, sondern reinen, ehrlichen Spielwitz schätzt, wird bei Army Men 2 fündig. Das genau in der Mitte zwischen Action und Echtzeittaktik geparkte Spielprinzip hat eine motivierende Spritzigkeit, die vielen hyperkomplexen Niveaulangweilern abgeht. Leider wurden nicht alle Schwächen des Vorgängers ausgebügelt. Die Wegfindungs-Intelligenz der Soldaten ist immer noch so eingeschränkt, daß sie jeder Musterungsarzt vom Grundwehrdienst befreien würde. Das Beladen von Fahrzeugen klappt im Schnitt erst beim dritten Mausklick. Army Men 2 hat den Anschluß zu aktuellen PC-Qualitätsstandards etwas verloren. Auf einen dritten Teil mit weniger Bedienungshakeligkeiten, mehr Missionen und zeitgemäßer Technik würde ich mich aufrichtig freuen.

The original Army Men was a decent game, though it didn't quite live up to many gamers' expectations. Awkward controls, dated graphics, and (on some missions) surprisingly difficult objectives detracted from the unquestionable allure of pitting those little plastic guys against one another. With Army Men II, 3DO seems to have corrected a number of the original game's issues. The problem is, Army Men II fails to cash in on its solid premise and ends up feeling more like a version 1.1 release than a full-fledged sequel.

Army Men is bij momenten wel boeiend, maar verslavend wordt het nooit. Army Men 2 komt er nog heelhuids door vanwege de multiplayer en zal zo toch een redelijke schare fans voor zich winnen. Voor mijn part mag er gerust een Army Men 3 het levenslicht zien, tenminste als er dan technisch eens stevig gesleuteld wordt. Dan kunnen we spreken van een kraker zonder meer.

Immer noch sind Freund und Feind mit einer ganz enormen KD - Künstlichen Dummheit - gesegnet. Die Wegfindung funktioniert fast überhaupt nicht, der für die entsprechende Routine verantwortliche Programmierer sollte sich schamvoll in die Ecke stellen. Immerhin sind die Missionen halbwegs spaßig, wenngleich der abrupte Wechsel zwischen der Riesenwelt der Menschen und der "normalen" der Plastikkämpfer nicht besonders pfiffig ist. Zudem wimmelt es vor unfairen Stellen. Wer nicht unbedingt mit Plastiksoldaten spielen muß, findet deutlich besseres im Händlerregal.

Army Men 2 to dosyć udana kontynuacja dobrej gry, choć można by tu po marudzić z powodu małej ilości misji. Dla miłośników rozgrywki wieloosobowej pocieszające niech będzie to, iż mogą się bawić w sieci na specjalnie przygotowanych do tego planszach. I wybaczcie mi że tak mało uwagi poświęcam tej grze, ale inne bardziej gorące produkty stygną.

Army Men II does have shorter, more numerous campaigns, a save-anywhere policy, and occasionally amusing backdrops with appropriate obstacles and antagonists. But its poor movement, AI, graphics, and a general lack of imagination remain a legacy from the original release. Fight your battles elsewhere.
