Baldies is one of the most original games I've seen in a while. It provides an addictive gaming experience, and has enough secrets and tricks to keep you on your toes for a long time. The inventions you can create and the endless ways to combine them are absolutely hilarious. Panasonic describes Baldies as "Totally demented action for people who think," and that's exactly what you get. Baldies is a definite must-have for strategy and puzzle fans.
Ever wanted to be Dr. Frankenstein, experimenting on people and animals in anyway you wished? Ever want to use those inventions on little bald men? Now you can, in Baldies, the sick and twisted strategy game from Panasonic. The premise of the game is simple. You are the God of the Baldies, who are the rivals of the Harries (apparently, the war is over the presence of loathsome hair). It's your job to control the Baldies by showing them where to go, what to research, and what to do so that you (and they) can destroy the Harries.
Finally! A solution for hair-loss. Yes a computer game that will, once and for all, take care of your disappearing hair. To put it simply, playing this game will make you lose all you hair. Voila! No more problem! What's more you'll never notice that it's gone. Baldies will make you feel great about not having hair! Makes me wonder what the team members at Creative Edge look like.
Baldies is a real-time strategy game featuring humor and solid mechanics, plus a four-player network option. One problem you should be aware of, though, is buggy DirectX 3 support: unless you're willing to remove DirectX 3 and replace it with DirectX 2, you might find yourself playing the (lower resolution) DOS version [a patch is now available that addresses this issue - visit www.baldies.com]. That gripe aside, Baldies is great fun, and well worth a look.
From initial concept to practical execution, Baldies is sick and wrong. It's one thing to have a serious, rock-jawed game like, say, Command & Conquer, wherein you order very serious military units to advance upon enemy positions, attack key targets, and, if the need arises, employ nuclear force - but THIS: Cute little Ziggy-esque moppets jogging around, punching each other out or shooting one another... stepping on cute little land mines called "poppers"... using little animals in biological weapons testing - BUNNIES, yet… growing angel wings for the purpose of airborne assault... perverting the very meteorological order of nature... did I mention bunnies?
Baldies is an interesting idea, which could have used a little more "punch". After playing the game, I still do not see the significance of creating "bald" creatures to populate these worlds, because the fact that the inhabitants are bald has no relevance to the title. Perhaps it was simply too difficult to program "hair" for these small creatures at 640x480. The demented nature of popping and burning your victims is one that I find to be interesting on a personal level, but the fact that these effects are clearly displayed only on such a small scale detracts from the visual appeal of Baldies. Add to that the fact that the direct-mail price of Baldies is $45 plus, and I would imagine that most players could find an equally entertaining product at their local software store for much less.
This quirky little game will have you begging for more - more information on how to play, that is.
Man fragt sich, wofür die Entwickler soviel Zeit benötigten. Die pixelige VGA-Grafik unter DOS und der Adlib-Sound können es nicht gewesen sein, die stammen augenscheinlich aus längst vergangen Tagen. Unter Win95 läuft das Spiel zwar brav in SVGA, vom Schemel haut das aber heutzutage niemanden mehr, zumal es sich beim Hi-Res-Mode um ein Schummel-SVGA à la “C&C 2“ handelt. Das Gameplay wurde seit dem etwa ein Jahr alten Demo keiner Revision unterzogen, allerdings verfügt Ihr nun über eine stattlichere Anzahl an Waffen. Was „Baldies“ fehlt, ist die spielerische Leichtigkeit die z.B. Populus so zugänglich machte. Da Ihr Euch (fast) um jede Glatze selber kümmern müßt, beschäftigt Ihr Euch zu sehr mit Euren Jungs, nur um dann vom Gegner seelenruhig überrannt zu werden. Für Abhilfe hätten hier einige Automatismen sorgen können, die dem Spieler Routine-Aufgaben abnehmen und Ihm so genug Zeit lassen, sich auf das Wesentliche zu konzentrieren.
