That is The Adrenaline Vault’s Reviewer’s Choice Award you saw at the top of the first page of this review. No matter that Balls of Steel features two-dimensional, scrolling tables in a time of unmitigated, three-dimensional realism. No matter that other titles have more strictly adhered to simulating the actual mechanics of real-world pinball. Balls of Steel brings outstanding art and animation, youthful enthusiasm, and consummate gameplay to the table, and executes the concept with raging brilliance. Simply put, I have never been injected with such a stimulating and addictive pinball drug. And in case you are wondering, yes, there are strippers in the Duke Nukem table.

After playing virtually every PC pinball game ever released, I can enthusiastically say that Balls of Steel is now my favorite. Its combination of smooth, realistic gameplay with creative animated challenges simply cannot be beaten. I am totally addicted to it -- I simply cannot stop playing it -- and would have given it an even higher numerical rating except that I reserve ratings in the 90s for games that are truly innovative compared to what has come before. What makes this game great is not a new game concept -- after all, pinball has been around for ages -- but rather the way Wildfire Studios has synthesized the very best ideas from what has come before and improved upon them. Any pinball lover should run out and buy this one, and those who have not yet gotten hooked on pinball might very well find this to present an irresistible seduction into the pastime.

Nad tym, czy warto jest kupić Balls Of Steel, nie ma się co zastanawiać. Gra wymiata pod każdym względem i stanowi klasykę gatunku. Czemu jednak jest lepsza od wcale nie najsłabszej konkurencji? Już odpowiadam. Przede wszystkim jest świetna pod względem graficznym i muzycznym. Sample, jakie gracz słyszy podczas gry, na długo zapadają w pamięć. Prócz tego "BOS" zawiera szereg nowych rozwiązań (zmieniający się sposób widzenia stołu - raz widzimy jego fragment, raz całość), całą masę efektów specjalnych typu ziejący ogniem smok czy płonące budynki, a także przejrzyste menu pozwalające dobrać odpowiedni stopień trudności. Całość zaś tworzy jeden spójny organizm, który nie posiada żadnej skazy na swym jakże pięknym ciele.

There have been quite a few pinball games released over the last few months, but Balls of Steel's great graphics, sound and playability make it one of the best PC pinball games ever.

Fünf ausgewogene Tische, realistische Kugelbewegungen, eine tadellose grafische Präsentation und eine gute Soundkulisse – das garantiert erstmalig nach Pro Pinball: Timeshock wieder schlaflose Nächte. Was mich trotzdem stört, ist der übertrieben einfache Schwierigkeitsgrad. Wer nicht gerade zwei linke Hände hat, kann pro "Credit" problemlos über eine Stunde vor sich hin flippern.

Balls of Steel ähnelt teilweise mehr einem Arcade-Automaten als dem altgedienten Flipper aus der Kneipe nebenan: Wer lange genug durchhält, darf einem Drachen die Kugel geben oder den ganzen Tisch unter Wasser setzen. Die Punktehatz ist nicht nur Selbstzweck, sondern durch die Minimissionen auch auf Dauer motivierend. Dank des fairen Tischdesigns feiern auch Einsteiger bald erste Erfolge. Am besten gefällt mir die Atmosphäre von Barbarian und Mutation, und wenn Duke Nukem cool behauptet »I got balls of steel«, bin ich im siebten Flipperhimmel. Balls of Steel ist sicher nicht die ultimative Pinball-Simulation, aber bestimmt der spaßigste PC-Flipper.

Balls of Steel bietet mit den fünf grafisch grellbunten Flippertischen eine Menge Abwechslung. Schade ist nur, daß durch das Scrolling etwas der Überblick und ein Tick Realitätsnähe verlorengehen. Wer die Vollansicht wählt, dem seien wegen der mickrigen Darstellung eine Lupe oder ein 24 Zoll-Monitor (kleiner Scherz am Rande) empfohlen.

If you're looking for the ultimate in PC pinball sim realism, BOS won't satisfy you. Rather, where BOS succeeds is in its fun factor. As you'd expect from a game that includes a Duke Nukem table ("I have balls of steel"), there's fun to be had here. Couple that with online bragging rights (some gamers have managed to keep a game going for ten hours, rolling up scores in the billions) and you have a game worthy of the Pinball Wizard moniker.

Onvoorwaardelijke fans van Duke Nukem en flipperkasten mogen dit niet missen. Twijfelaars kunnen beter eerst de speelbare demo's van Balls of Steel, Addiction Pinball en Timeshock (hebben allen reeds eerder op de cover cd gestaan) proberen en daarna hun keuze maken.

Immerhin ist die Kugelphysik weitgehend OK. Wer noch keinen Flipper hat oder vom Charme des waffenstrotzenden Duke gelockt wird, kann sich Balls of Steel gönnen. Das Ding spielt sich nicht übel und der High-Score-Vergleich per Internet ist ganz pfiffig.
