Batman: Arkham City is an unparalleled artistic achievement, with great melee combat, an interesting (though wandering) story and lots of gameplay options. But it really is possible to have too much of a good thing, which is why Arkham Asylum will always be the better game. Sometimes just a slice is better than the whole thing.

Rocksteady have managed the impossible: they have taken the definitive Batman experience of Arkham Asylum and improved on it in every possible way. By taking Batman off of Arkham Island and throwing him in to the dingy streets of Arkham City Rocksteady have made not only the finest Superhero game, but one of the best games of this generation.

Few games are as this polished and deep and when you revel in all your memories and experiences with the game as the end credits roll, you know you’ve played a superior piece of entertainment. This isn’t a game that you’ll play now and forget about a week later, nor isn’t something that should be excluded from every conceivable game of the year list.

Batman: Arkham City is one of those games that rightly garnered much attention with the end of 2011 Game of the Year lists. Maybe it didn't get as much attention from PC gamers, but it should. If you want to have the definitive Arkham City experience, I'd say PC is the way to go.

(1) If Catwoman hadn't been involved, I would have rated Arkham City a 9.9 -- at worst. As it is, with so much content, it feels like it's bursting at the seams. Batman: Arkham City is a game that will be in the running for Game of the Year at many websites. It is most deserving of it. Rocksteady took Arkham Asylum and absolutely blew it away with this fantastic followup. (2) Superhero games often struggle to become remarkable or even average. The reason can be puzzling, but be rest assured, if you've never picked up a Batman game in today's world of gaming, you're missing out on a lot. Even if you're not particularly a comic-book fan, this game is a definite must.

Amen.

It seems odd that a 3 letter word like “Fun” is capable of describing the gameplay experience. No matter how many adjectives I add to it, Batman Arkham City is pure, captivating, sensational, no-bones-about- it “Fun!”

Batman: Arkham City isn't perfect, but listing the little things I didn't like gets in the way of all the stuff I adored. The voice acting, the challenges, the amazing opening, the unbelievable ending and the feeling of being the Dark Knight -- these are the things that standout looking back. I've beaten this thing twice and still want to call in sick and chase Riddler Trophies. Batman: Arkham City isn't just better than Batman: Arkham Asylum, it's better than most games on the market.

Though the ending is surprising, in a way, the story isn’t the main focus of Batman: Arkham City. Exploring and adventuring come first, you have so much to do that the hours just slip by you. Yes, the boss fights are probably too easy, the narrative too short, the framerate goes down on occasion and not all the players will appreciate searching through every nook and cranny to find trophies. But it’s all up to you and Arkham City offers a variety that not a lot of new games have nowadays.

Whether you're a diehard fan of Batman, or you're simply looking for a good game to play, you'd be hard pressed to find one better than Batman: Arkham City. Go forth into the world of criminal masterminds and save Gotham City!

Nevertheless, Batman: Arkham City is a kick-ass title that does a lot of things right and will give you more than your money’s worth. If you don’t want to take a chance on the superior-but-problematic PC version, you might be tempted to rent it on a console. I would recommend against that, however, as you’ll definitely want to play the Catwoman parts, short as they may be (it's the free DLC that comes with new copies).

The result is that Arkham City is a brave game, trying new ideas while also staying fundamentally similar. There are weaknesses in the recipes that Rocksteady has created - we can't say we're personally won over by the open world approach - but a weakness isn't a failure and it can't be overlooked that Arkham City is still a very strong game.

Bat-brawling shows wear and Batman’s a charisma void, but the freedom and depth of the open world are mesmerising.

I enjoyed the game and recommend it to game players from any background. The simple interface and varying difficulty levels ensure that anyone can pick up the game and have fun with it.

Those of you without DX11 cards are sure to enjoy Arkham City, as you're still getting an attractive HD version of the console game, albeit one that doesn't look anything like the spiffy NVIDIA video above. For the rest of us packing serious DX11 hardware, it's going to take some patching or driver updates before Arkham City lives up to the amazing potential that we know it has, so we recommend holding off on your purchase until everything has been fixed.

Game Over Online
Batman: Arkham City is what you get when a studio isn't trying and is content to rest on its laurels. Other than the half-hearted attempt at an open world setting, nothing stands out as being an improvement on the previous game and many things that Arkham Asylum did well were completely fumbled here. If you want a tight, immersive Batman experience (albeit with a goofy ending), just play the first game (again). However, if you don't really care about story, characterization, immersion, or even decent pacing, and you just want to beat up random thugs, have arbitrary boss battles and collect meaningless hidden green statues, this is the game for you.
