PC Games (Germany) (Nov, 2002)
GameZone (Dec 03, 2002)
I liked the multiplayer aspect of the game better than the game itself, but both present their own challenges. I think the real beauty behind the battle AI is exposed through playing with other humans. The campaigns are dynamic to an extent, but it’s very similar to many other “destroy everything” games such as Warcraft. Like that’s bad. Warcraft is one of the most successful games out there, but WOTW is a better kick butt game.

Trotzdem: Kein Battle Realms-Fan wird an diesem rundum gelungenen Add-On vorbeikommen!

If you're not the kind of player that's maddened by challenging AI's, Winter of the Wolf might have something for your stomach. Eventually, I am sure that this game will appeal to every RTS fan. So, if you ever decide to put aside your copy of Age of Mythology, give this one a chance. Oh yeah, and do not miss it if you loved the previous game.
PC Action (Nov 28, 2002)
Stratos Group (Feb 19, 2003)
I must say, overall I am extremely pleased with this title. I would have been elated, in fact minorly obsessed even, but the horrid networking bugs just hold this game back something fierce. Then again, if you are a single player only guy then I can definiately say that I recommend this game whole heartedly, you won't be disappointed. And hey, it ships with the original game too, so if you haven't played Battle Realms, then you'll be getting more than just an expansion pack!
Gameplay (Benelux) (Jan, 2003)
IGN (Nov 18, 2002)
While I wasn't really entirely thrilled by Winter of the Wolf, it does have something really good going for it. The package comes complete with the original Battle Realms, meaning you'll have a lot more good gaming hours ahead if you have yet to take a plunge into this fantastic Asian influenced world. Regardless of what I think of the expansion, I still believe that original title to be well worth the time and effort!
GameSpot (Nov 21, 2002)
Last year's Battle Realms was a great game that featured a lot of unusual, even innovative features and some truly impressive graphics. Winter of the Wolf doesn't make any huge changes to the original, and therefore inadvertently illustrates just how far the real-time strategy genre has come along in the last year. Fans of real-time strategy gaming who might have missed Battle Realms amid last year's busy holiday season may still do well to give the game a look at this time, though the circumstances are such that they're liable to miss out on the game once again, especially since they have plenty of alternatives.
Game Chronicles (Nov 23, 2002)
I have been fairly harsh on this game, but it is a nice respite from the usual RTS title. The only problem is that the innovations are usually a hindrance to my enjoyment of the game, so instead of appreciating the originality in it, I end up just frustrated by everything from my limited options and lack of wiggle room to the slowness of troop production and the overwhelming power of buildings and peasants to stand up to punishment and the computer’s annoying habit of having to be chased down and nailed to the floor. With a sledgehammer and railroad spikes. Anyway know what you’re getting into and you should enjoy this title, otherwise stick to Warcraft or something you’ll save money on keyboards and aspirin bottles.
ESC Magazine (Jan 15, 2003)
So, for those who have already worked their way through the hot RTS titles of the year and are looking for a fresh challenge, or those who simply can't get enough of the Battle Realms universe, Winter of the Wolf is a good choice. However, casual fans of the original title, or those looking to get their feet wet in the real-time gaming arena, would be better off giving it the cold shoulder.
When I reviewed Battle Realms, I said that it was a dazzling presentation wrapped around an empty shell. A year later, the presentation isn’t dazzling anymore, and the shell is even emptier.
