The game is very well written. I had no installation problems, and it didn't crash once during my playing....uh, testing of the product. The documentation is very complete, with a step-by-step tutorial. The only addition to the documentation that would be more helpful is a little more background information on the battle, for the players that aren't as informed as I was. This game is a must have for all serious war gamers, and is still interesting for casual stategy game players. And who knows, it may even prove educational. I am anxiously awaiting Volume 3 from TalonSoft, as I am sure it will be as superior product as this one is.

GETTYSBURG represents a significant advancement in the evolution of TalonSoft's Battleground series, which clearly comes into its own in 19th century warfare. The hex maps are more colorful, richly detailed and flexible than BATTLEGROUND: ARDENNES, the company's debut game. Moreover, gameplay is enhanced by including more of the detail that was conspicuously absent in ARDENNES: leaders play an important role in maintaining unit morale and cohesion; flank attacks and enfilade fire make unit facings important; keeping infantry and artillery supplied with ammunition is a critical aspect of battlefield command; a single routed unit can trigger a ripple effect of confusion and panic that spreads widely throughout an army.

Despite these small design quibbles, Gettysburg is an entertaining game that does a surprisingly good job at recreating the feel (if not all the details) of the famous battle.

The Civil War still provokes strong opinions from people. Since the day the war ended, questions of “what if” have inspired endless debate. Therefore, it's no surprise that people can recreate the military actions of the period through wargames. Of the many Civil War strategy games available on the market, Battleground: Gettysburg comes very close to being the best.
