There is little not to like in Bull Run. If I could make two changes it would be the addition of an on-screen display of movement costs. To mentally factor in the terrain costs, elevation changes, and formation effects when making a critical movement decision is overly burdensome. I would also bring back the hex shaped outline that highlights the target of opposing fire. It has been changed to a square. This has incensed veterans to the point of starting Internet petitions to bring back the old display. If you’re a Civil War buff, Bull Run is a must buy. You’ll gain additional insights into the period while having a grand time recreating these two pivotal battles.

What a strange review. I really like this game, recommend it highly, and yet I've said mostly negative things about it. I suppose this could be attributed to the fact that school starts up in two weeks and I don't even have my syllabi ready yet, but think it's due more to my relationship to Talonsoft's products. I love 'em, but the honeymoon's over and now a certain sameness has set in. Fortunately, it looks like some innovative changes are on the horizon at Talonsoft - their East Front World War II game looks like nothing else they've done before, and with a tactical-level Vietnam game and Norm Koger's Operational Art of War coming up, it seems Talonsoft will continue their reign as the champions of computer wargaming. Bottom line: If you're a wargamer or a Civil War buff, this game is a must-have.

First Manassas is represented by four variations, mostly in starting time (making for a shorter game in which the fighting starts faster) and unit release, along with a couple of versions of Jackson's "stone wall" defense. Second Manassas has two full-blown versions (again with different start times and unit release) and a series of smaller scenarios representing the thickest action, such as the attack on Jackson's position. The superior depth in which these battles are rendered will overrule any qualms many gamers will have about system mechanics and game engine quirks.
